Tried that also but it only picked up stuff from some music channels , thanks for the help no big issue anyway.

I often use the brackets option. So you could have put (The Voice) for title entry and (Jones Tom) for actor. That way, if Tivo sees a show with either The Voice as the title, ot Tom Jones as an actor, it will record it. Leaving the brackets off will require a show to have the voice as a title AND Tom Jones as an Actor.

I find the '-' ones very useful. For example, I have Jason Statham as an actor and -Crank as the title. That way it will record all Jason Statham films except Crank, which I have on DVD.

Apologies if you knew that already.

I did. Never spotted that :o:

Erm... because he's primarily a musician, perhaps ;)

Edited to add:
Okay this is weird. If you do what I suggest above, a Wishlist for "Jones, Tom" does, as I said, not pick up 'The Voice UK' (as it is listed the the EPG.) However, the programme is listed in Tom Jones' entry as something he has appeared in. Huh?

Incidentally, muppetman11, in his entry, as mentioned above, there are many TV shows and a couple of films, but nothing from any music channel.

He also has two entries for "Jones, Tom" and one for "Jones, Tom Sir"!!

This just gets weirder

"Jones , Tom" brings upcoming programmes like Pop Go the sixties , The Fresh prince of Bel Air , Outtake TV.

So, last night I was speaking to a guy in retentions about adding a 1TB Tivo. The conversation went something along the lines of:

VM advisor "I'd leave it a few weeks if I were you - the prices might well be changing"
Grim "I understand what you're saying"
VM advisor "good, because I cant say more than that at the moment"
Grim "cheers, I'll leave it and call back sometime towards the end of April?"
VM advisor "yes that might be a good idea"

So did I just cross paths with the worst saleman in the world? :)

That'll do for me Den. Really sceptical but was getting weeweed off at the updates being on TIVO and not on my HD box. Virgin phoned me and offered me the upgrade to TIVO and broadband upgrade. Tied into it for a year so time will tell. Thanks for taking the time mate.

I think it depends which Tivo the online TV guide can "see". Not sure how to change it as I only have the one, but I imagine a call to CS might be required :)

Carl can not speak for him but I got it because my package was reduced by £10 per month if I took it ! & yes I did ask if they would just knock off £10 & leave me as I was .The answer was that, the offer was only available if I had a TiVo . So two boxes instead of one ( my V+) To me that is plain daft, but £10 is £10 :D

As far as I understand it's not a completely right to remain silent, it's the right not to self incriminate.

You are quite correct:-
"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger."

The Fifth Amendment protects witnesses from being forced to incriminate themselves. To "plead the Fifth" or to "take the Fifth" is a refusal to answer a question because the response could form self incriminating evidence.
Hence I "took" the 5th :D

Just got it installed today. Not had much time to play about with it, but impressions so far. Love the display of genre of tv/film that I like and then it gives you what's available all over tv, on demand etc, love that it allows you to plan future new episodes of programmes that's new series ain't on yet. Not keen on the fact that you have to revisit a current series link and amend it to only record new episodes. Two week guide is a plus. Tried you tube, great but haven't worked out how to stop a video I'm watching without coming out of it all together. Will mess about later. So far pretty impressed.

I've not got to the point of completely trusting the 'new' setting, so for nearly all* my shows I use new & reruns.

If the 'new' tag gets left of the EPG data, the show won't record. The downside is that by using new & reruns, you may have to delete some shows that it's recorded that you've already seen.

In fairness, I think the EPG has got a lot better than it was a year ago when I first got Tivo, and there's not as much risk of a new episode not recording these days as there used to be, but I err on the cautious side.

* If I'm not that fussed if I do miss a new episode, then I will use 'new'. For example Law and Order SVU on Universal, where there isn't an ongoing storyline, so it's not a biggie if you miss one episode, and to not use new would give you lots of deleting of old episodes.

Not keen on it recording stuff it thinks I might like. Well had a play, not the amazing bit of kit imo that some have enthused over but some very good things about it. Reminders will be a big miss, but all in all a improvement but not a massive improvement on my HD box. Certainly wouldn't have paid top dollar for it.

You can turn it off if you want. I leave it on and just ignore it because it deletes these shows automatically if space is needed. As you use tivo more, the suggestions will be more to your likeing, especially if you use the thumbs up and down button.

The thing I don't quite understand with having TiVo for 4 months now is when you go into screens like planned recordings you lose the recommendation bar + live TV window, is that likely be rectified in the next code update?

Wouldn't have thought so. Some people don't want it there at all. :) (Not me, btw. I don't have a problem with it!) It's not needed all the time.

I read on DS that a 'Star Trek' app is to launch on April 11.

Wow! One app I might actually have to use for a while :)

I guess that's timed for CBS Action showing the remastered TOS as that starts at 18:00 on the 11th.

And in my mind Lew the original series is still the best even though the other series were still very good.

Sorry guess i was wrong in thinking that Sky sports red button was on Tivo:confused: Match choice as Den pointed out was available on HD box for champions league last night but not on Tivo and it appears that red button is also missing on TiVo for the masters:( Looks like to get all services you have to have various different Virgin boxes. That I'm afraid to say is very very unprofessional

:D MM, but really who launches a new supposedly upgraded box that lacks many of the good things that the old box has, ie red button on various channels, easy recording and reminders. TiVo has some decent features but some very large glaring og's:(

Ah well it is getting a Star Trek app:rolleyes:

How the hell can they not have red button service for the biggest football club competition in Europe and for one of the golf majors but have it on the old box. Beggars belief!

Explain that away

Because I for one would rather have the Tivo as it is now than not at all before they add miminally-useful stuff like reminders.

I don't think they have "red button" in the US, so it's had to be added and that has taken some time. Possibly longer than they thought it would.

Carl, obviously you are entitled to your opinion but to me TiVo is beginning to look like a large space to store hours and hours of tv and not a lot more.

Because when Sky started development on the applications for VM, TiVo hadn't even launched. Quite reasonably, they did the apps for the highest numbers of users first.

As explained on that vmcommunity post, the TiVo apps will be delivered over several months, just like happened with the Liberate apps last year.

Even the mighty Sky can't do stuff instantly.

So it's Sky's fault, who'd have thought it eh? Am I right in saying that red button is available on F1 channel for TiVo but not on HD box?

I do not have Sky sports red button on the F1Channel on my VHD box, it is due in July.

Which is exactly what it is supposed to be (ie a way to find things you want to watch from whatever source) and I'm more than happy with that.

So why is it we had Masters on the range on Sky Sports red button on TiVo this week then and not the Masters SP.:)

Because they don't have infinite resources. Maybe they could have done golf instead of F1, or football instead of F1, but for whatever reason it was decided to do F1 first. Considering the popularity of F1 and the number of races, I think they made the right decision.

Don't know. But I'd bet there is a good technical, commercial or operational reason.

Everything happens for a reason. :)

Henkesghost 05-04-2012 22:06

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

So basically if you want all the services that virgin tv provides you need two boxes. Sorry that is not good customer service. Splitting the HD and red button available between HD box and TiVo box smacks of maximising your profits to the detriment of the customer.
