Why anyone would think Virgin would hold back a channel just because a rebrand is happening is beyond me, no announcement has been made so it is extreamly likely that Universal HD will be joining the line up tomorrow.

On October 18, the pay-TV channel and its high definition variant will become the Universal Channel and the Universal Channel HD on Sky and Virgin Media. The Hallmark Channel +1 will also take on the new branding.

You are reading the sentence wrong, it says that the the channels will be rebranded not that the HD variant will be on VM.

Remember that Digital Spy said that Sky Sports News HD would be launching on Virgin at launch. It didn't and we're still waiting. All Digital Spy do is rewrite press releases and, if they're not fully clear in the first place, then that leads to confusion later on.

The simple fact is that, in the vast majority of cases, Virgin Media announces HD channel launches with fair notice and normally with a placeholder. People may point to Five HD but that seems to be a rarity, and even that was at least testing on the platform prior to launch.

It's fair to say there's more chance of Universal HD not being available tomorrow.

I did another search on my TV (that has a cable tuner built in) and there is still nothing else showing as testing apart from BBC One HD.

Completely the opposite of what I said. I didn't say that Universal HD would not be coming to Virgin Media because of the rebranding, I said not to expect it to come to VM just because of the rebranding. Media Boy's latest 'prediction' is that "ITV2 HD and Universal Channel HD may become available on Virgin Media." but that's all and I have seen nothing on my humble Pace V Box to suggest that they are coming tomorrow.

Similarly "All channels will become 3D on Sky and Virgin Media from tomorrow" does not mean that you are getting all channels from tomorrow, just that the ones you have will become 3D. And NO, that's not REALLY happening so no "gimme, gimme, gimme" comments or hand clap smilies please!

Agree nothing concrete either way. My media friend says Virgin are in discussion for ITV HD channels and are in dis.cussions with ESPN for content. He's not heard anything about Universal HD although I read somewhere it may come on channel 161 but who knows when.

No i would disagree for what its worth.;) I would love to have the History channel HD and Crime and investigation network HD to me they are the most watched channels,and something after having watched i have felt as though i have learned something as opposed to having tuned into pap,that is meaningless.:)

I agree that both History and C&I are great, informative and stimulating channels but, as I've said here before a long time ago, how much HD content is available for them to broadcast? Much of the content is made up from archive footage (well it is History and old crimes after all) and I imagine that only the most recent productions have been made with HD in mind.

So maybe these two are not high on the list of must have HD channels after all. I'm open to correction by someone with Sky HD or some actual facts about the production of the programmes though.

I had Sky HD and can assure c&I HD was rubbish with lots of clips and footage not even in HD.

What is this fascination some have over HD ?

Yes, the picture in most cases is superior, but the V+ box upscales so brilliantly anyway. And, (in my opinion), if Virgin did have the same number of HD channels Sky have, surely they would have to increase subs to pay for them ?

More to the point though, just how much TV do some here watch !

I used to come on this forum thread to read what Mediaboy believes is coming soon. Some come true, some dont. Thats the way it is, and I accept that. However, just recently, its becoming a "sky has this, why dont we....", and to be truthful, its getting very boring !

If a channel is available in HD then I will watch it. If its not, then I will watch the SD version and not lose sleep over it. If it comes, it comes

Also, some of those privileged enough to have HD TVs and V+/V HD boxes have said that VM's upscaled SD is almost as good as Sky's HD.

i think you guys are confusing what hd and upscaling are. The main reason why the picture is good on the sky and virgin boxes is because you are using a hdmi cable so the video is digital, scart is analog and is very blurred, the actual upscaling doesn't make much difference. What does make a difference in hd is the bitrate which is why non-hd programmes on a hd channel is no longer blocky, hd shows are obviously way better still as not only do they have higher bitrate they also have 1920x1080 lines.

Anyone who says ITV looks nearly as good as ITVHD on virgin needs their eyes testing i'm afraid, the difference is night and day.

Noticed 2 new 3D trailers of upcoming films have appeared, for the new Christmas Carol film and Garfield Pet Force (which is now available to purchase). I've recently purchased a 3D TV (Sony HX803) so have checked them out. Both looked quite effective in 3D, the Christmas Carol in particular (always like the snow effect in 3D) so I am tempted to purchase when it is released in December.

Yes, the V+ box does upscale very nicely. However, it's only as good as the SD channel in question. If the SD channel is poor quality (I'm looking at you, ESPN America) then the upscaled version will also be poor. If you have an HDTV try comparing ESPN and ESPN HD on the same TV. The HD channel is way better than the upscaled SD channel.

Bravo and Channel One to close on January 14th?

I was playing around with my Virgin Box on Saturday Afternoon and I found out that Virgin will remove the final show from Bravo on Demand on January 14th. With Channel One on Demand last show being remove on January 7th (I think).

Virgin remove HBO on the 14th of October when the last show was set to be removed on that date.

But still no insider will confrim the 14th of January date to me.

My friend who's the media contact says he's heard the ESPN content could be in the New Year dependant on ESPN 2 launch but he said its all up in the air.

For me, it's not just the better picture quality of HD (and why shouldn't we have the best picture quality that is available on Virgin Media?), but it's also, very much, about the sound.

A lot of films and most current US dramas are broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1. This not only gives better sound clarity, but surround effects for the action type dramas. Music often sounds much better in 5.1.

Yes, I meant to mention that ITV1HD are useless with regard to 5.1. Someone has said that they are working on it.

But the other HD channels have a lot of 5.1; It depends on what you watch. A lot of films shown on channel 4/E4/Film4 are 5.1.

Most of the current US drama series shown on all the HD channels are; Fringe and Nikita are a couple of examples.

ESPN 2, ESPN America HD, ESPN News, ESPN Classic on demand is to launch on the Virgin platform early in the New Year. My insider has confirmed that talks between the pair have resulted in Virgin adding these channels at no extra cost

I agree but there are other music channels that could be added (like Scuzz & Lava). HD isn't the be all and end all

if they attracted enough viewers virign would but doesnt make commerical sense i believe cant be sur enot checked in a while but the chartshwo channels are up for renewal and they might try get deal for all off them at once but dnt hold you breath as i say music channel viewer number aint high plus virign rather people use music on demand

Channel 5 On Demand programming is now appearing in the TV Catch Up search option although you do not appear to be able to watch the programmes (Neighbours amongst others)

I was looking forward to the free sky movies weekend, what a damp squib!

If thats 'showcase' they can keep it.
I was under the deluded impression that ALL the movie channels (incl HD) would be free, what a non-event, i'll go to the pub instead and indulge in beer and intellectual conversation, at least at the beginning of the night, after that i'll talk [Inappropriate language removed]. ;-)

I was under that impression too. Ok, in the end it's free, so maybe we shouldn't complain. But the list of films is shockingly bad. Guess I can delete the reminder for that weekend from my calendar now.

It has gone again now, it could have been a regional thing as muppetman spotted it but he lives in the NorthWest too but it seemed to be widely spotted by DS and VM forum members too.

[/COLOR]The Sky website always said it was only Showcase that would be free (it's the same for their own customers too), I didn't notice that we wouldn't get it on the Friday though.

Give me Film4 any day of the week which luckily we can have in HD too!

My Virgin Tester has notice today that test 42-45 hid are now accompanied by test 42-45 without hid and they are showing on demand trailers.

Those test channels have been there since BBC one HD was discovered last week.

I am working on the tests becoming the new ITV HD Channels.

But my Tester did not say anything about the info on the EPG Banner.

(EDIT: For all I know it maybe even ESPN America HD plus Sky Arts HD Channels or Eden HD/Good Food HD)

It's a crappy idea imo, if it had of been music videos then it would have been a great idea and a worthwhile service but as it's just basically a radio station made of your playlist it just seems a bit pointless :dozey:

This bit sounds good

at the moment only subscribers to the Sky HD service will be able to watch live coverage of the touring car races in high definition. However, more viewers may be able to gain access to these live HD broadcasts in the future, as ITV is reported to be keen to strike deals with other TV network providers (e.g. Virgin Media) to carry its ITV2 HD, ITV3 HD and ITV4 HD channels.

Just noticed on Disney XD channel it now says watch in HD now no mention of just being available on Sky so that has to be promising.

lets just says virgin are hopin if everythign goes to plan to give all virgin customer a nice christmas present maybe early but hopefully before christmas meaning that virgin shoul be more on par with sky but certianly no cuahgt up in hd front but more on par otherwise it will eb next year

Because it's like they are going backwards, instead of actually getting off their arses and getting a deal on the remaining music TV channels that are available they instead get a deal with an iffy service like Spotify and offer us radio on the TV.....whoopie :rolleyes:

Like I posted earlier in the forum I'm 99% sure it will be ITV HD channels. My source said they are defo coming and believed they would come in November when 3 and 4 launch.
