Season is going to be even crazier that the last one at this rate. Third 6 - 0 this weekend!! Also, the more surprising of them.

I had villa to win on an accumulator, need to stop doing those. On the other hand I have a £10 on Bob Bradley to become Villa manager before this odds shortened (so 9/1).

He was rubbish today, along with Evans, Park and O'Shea.

I would rather see Rafael at right back, Wes Brown instead of Evans, and Carrick instead of Park, plus Nani has to start, we look more dangerous when he is on the pitch, plus Macheda or Owen ahead of Berbatov.

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

Thought City looked a pretty decent unit last night but in all fairness Liverpool looked a very out of sorts team. The Mascherano situation cannot have helped matters in the slightest!
Despite all the money spent on players in my eyes the players that stood out last night (with the exception of Milner) were Joe Hart, who didn`t have much to do (like Reina) but when called upon was magnificent, Micah Richards looked to be hungry to perform and never stopped on the right flank whether it was supporting Johnson or defending. I don`t think the Liverpool guy Jovanavich (or whatever) got past him once, same can`t be said of Lescott who i thought was average.
The other and i think star player was Adam Johnson. He frightened the life out of Agger who got booked early which never helps and was such a threat that Liverpool soon started doubling up on him.
Tevez was his usual quality as well, not his goal though ;)

4 points from Spurs away (which admittedly we should have lost) and Liverpool at home i`d have taken gladly :D :)

He's not criticising City though, nor does he come across as being hypocritical.

He says :"If they have the money and if they pay then it's not a drama," as well as "But if they have the money, they can do it. And if they have the ambition to win the Premiership, they can do it."

There is no where in that article he is criticising them. He is saying he can't compete.

"So when Sir Alex says 'kamikaze', if he's referring to the way they are going and eating the market then I agree with him."

That doesn't sound like him saying what they are doing is wrong or out of order.

I think Mourinho is too clever to be critical of a big spending team, bearing in mind a) he's been there with Chelsea, and b) he is likely to spend big with Real.

When Manchester United made Bebé the most improbable signing of the summer Sir Alex Ferguson argued there was no risk attached, explaining that "sometimes you just have to go with instinct". Yet a fortnight on, the striker's career at Old Trafford has got off to a false start, his performances in training deemed so poor he was not even considered for a reserve fixture last night.

The first disappointment for Bebé may not be entirely unexpected given the strange circumstances of the transfer. After an undistinguished spell at the Portuguese Third Division club Estrala da Amadora he was available on a free transfer seven weeks ago, but United did not sign the player, affiliated to the influential agent Jorge Mendes, until after he had joined Guimarães, paying the full €9m buy-out clause.

It would be really interesting to compare the Irish commentator's reaction to Defoe's handball tonight to that of Thierry Henry's.

Interesting statistic about Jermain Defoe though:

19 - Jermain Defoe was penalised for handball 19 times in the 09/10 Premier League - nine times more than any other player. Limber.

Meh. Most players and teams would something similar if such important matters as Champions League qualification or World Cup qualification wasn't at stake.

The Henry thing wasn't really about hand ball, as I said at the time people have done it loads of times before, but just anger at the fact the victims were Ireland and it was France that did it. An English team doing it will not get the same reaction.

Levi won't go crazy. Champions League money is a lot but people over do just how much it is. Also Spurs are anything but sure of a place next year and he will factor in the cost of wages in the event there is no Champions League cash.

I know, that's my point. Such realism doesn't come in to play when it's dirty foreigner or it doesn't benefit a particular team.

The Eduardo vs Celtic dive is another good example. The reaction to that was completely ridiculous.

There is a very big difference with Henry and Defoe, Henry pushed the ball with his hand, with Defoe the ball touched his arm (technically handball) but it was not deliberate.

Absolutely but I have a feeling it'll be a 0-0 bore draw and truly dreadful to watch.

I'd stop short of calling the Europa league pointless but it is an unnecessary distraction based on the number of games required to be played to progress. It's exactly this type of competition (champions league included) which fuels the big squad culture giving rise to unsustainable spending. It's progressively driving a bigger wedge between the big money teams and those who aren't so prosperous. By the time UEFA, FIFA and teh premier league decide that it's time for change it'll be too late.

He controlled a high ball with his arm, it wasn't a mere technicality, he controlled the ball using his arm and scored a goal.

Now I don't mind the handball, the ref should have spotted it but it happens quite often. Players will try to get away with gaining an advantage same as diving, being offside, and so on. As long as it's not a tactic decided as the start of the game I don't blame Defore, Spurs or even the ref (hard to spot at that speed).

However, there was no outrage this morning was there? Compared to the absolute vilification of Henry. That's my problem. The hypocrisy between British and Foreign players.

Man United, Valencia, Rangers, Bursaspor - Not the greatest group but United should get though without problem

Chelsea, Marseille, Spartak Moskva, Zilina - Not too bad a group. Hard away game though

Arsenal, Shakhtar Donestsk, Braga, Partizan - Not awful. Should top that but the travel is not good.

Spurs, Inter, Bremen,Twente - Spurs or Twente runners up there IMO.

Oh don't get me wrong there will be a lot of fans going down but nothing even remotely like the 150k+ last time.

I wasn't down there for the UEFA final but I know a lot of people who were and they were disgusted by the amount of knuckle draggers who went down with the express intention of getting absolutely out their faces. That said the authorities could have dealt with matters far better than they did, the minute a British side got into the final there was always going to be a massive influx of people to watch it.

Blackburn away, a game Arsenal really hate. I really was expected a draw at best! So pleased to have won all three points :D

AC Milan have reached an agreement to take striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic on loan from Barcelona for the rest of the season. The Rossoneri will then have the option to buy the Sweden forward for £19.7m. (Various)

How much did they pay for him, £60 million and Etto wasn't it, worst deal ever...

Be interesting to see if Spurs play a strong team or their youngsters now they are in the Champions League and are chasing a top 4 finish again.

Speaking of Spurs, Redknapp was a little upset with a Sky reporter after the Wigan debacle.

£8m for Van Der Vaart?!? Where the hell did that one come from?

Levy is a hell of a business man. £1.5m for Krancjar? £8m for Van der Vaart? Next window £15m for Christiano Ronaldo. You've heard it here first.

What happened to Arsenal? Didn't Wenger promise at least another defender and a goalkeeper? Looks like they might be a few players short this season.

From what Redknapp has said, it seems he was offered to them at that price rather than negotiated.

He got the two defenders. Never promised a keeper but kept his options open. Would have liked one to be honest. But nothing has happened, it's typical Arsenal. They were never going to do a deal if the price wasn't right.

Dont think its any worse then staying at Real to be perfectly honest Niles, yes I would've prefered VDV at say Arsenal myself.

He'll get regular football at Spurs thats 1 thing for sure where as at Real he'll be lucky to be subbed ones in a blue moon.

Screw him at Arsenal, we have enough attacking midfielders. They are everywhere, might as well be helping out the stewards at this rate. Rather than giving us another selection headache with Arshavin, Walcott, Nasri, and others I would rather we had got a keeper or a defensive midfielder to rotate or play alongside (depending the situation) song.

Spurs puzzle me slightly. A great signing for 8million but why did they not get another striker or defender, two positions which they actually need more strength?

Arthurgray50@blu 01-09-2010 12:58

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

Spurs NEEDED an extra striker, so l cannot understand why Levy went for him, Obviously King and Woodgate are nearly finished, and we have enough midfielders and defence players.

I was under the impression that Levy was after a couple of strikers, and we didn't get one, when l heard Vaart, l said who?, who has gone from Tottenham ?

LIES!!!!! Everyone knows that the Premiership is where it's at. Haven't you even heard of Soccer AM? :D This week is actually Non-League Day where people are encouraged to go to their local team. Pretty good idea although I shall not be taking part. I don't think lower league football is any more 'real' than Premiership football, that is a rather bizarre statement.

Incidentally while listening to the often excellent Football Weekly I found out that AFC Wimbledon, the club set up by fans after their old club, Wimbledon, were moved to Milton Keynes and renamed the MK Dons, could be up in the Football League next year. What a fantastic achievement that would be!

They could then face the aforementioned MK Dons in the Football League in a matter of seasons. What a game that would be, and what a moment if AFC Wimbledon were to beat the team that effectively abolished Wimbledon and caused all those fans to lose their club.

Rooney back in the papers again today. You do wonder why the papers print this right before a major international game and then wonder why he doesn't play very well.

Still as long as it sells papers

I grew up round the corner from Plough Lane and my first ever football watch was watching WImbledon Vs York, in 1980. I supported them through the years, following the original crazy Gang (Fash, Vinnie, Lanchez etc etc).

Once they became the MK Dons, it was never the same and although I still look out for AFC Wimbledon results, I did feel like I lost a club to support.

Hopefully AFC Wimbledon will 'do a Wimbledon' again and be more successful than the MK Dons. And then justice will be served.

I, and I suspect many others, will would love AFC Wimbledon to to beat MK Dons. It would be such a nice story and as you say, justice would be served. I think if AFC Wimbledon would get promoted this year and back into the Football League a lot of people would refer to them as Wimbledon and they would be back :)

Ive followed Wimbledon/MK Dons as my "second" team since their FA cup exploits in the late 1970's - their rise to the top flight, and drop back down again. I also look out for AFC Wimbledons results, and have watched them rise through the lower leagues (and stall slightly more recently ...). I would love to see them play each other.

Yup. Bizarre. Not undeserved for Everton though and if you ignore the fact they threw it away then a draw at Goodison Park isn't too bad.

No, It was a good result for them. I like Blackpool, they have come up with a good attitude and have decided to play an attacking style of football. Much like West Brom did a couple of seasons ago. While this can backfire (they were destroyed by Arsenal) it seems to be working for them so far. 4th in the table.

I still fancy them to go down, every year one of the Championship sides makes a good go at the start of the season but ends up fighting for survival towards the end like the rest. Once results turn against them I am not sure they have the resources to copy and stay up but I hope I am wrong.

The bottom three are surprising. West Ham bottom, although people do overlook the hard fixtures given to them in their first few games, Stoke, who have a game in hand and Everton who have yet again started poorly.

I think West Ham, Blackpool and West Brom will go down at the moment. West Ham are not as bad as their position suggests (aka United and Chelsea is rough hand to be dealt) but their ownership seems like it will destabilize the club.
