That's strange, maybe it's something to do with what datacentre we're both accessing, I do not know though, I'd like to know too, curious now haha.

Heres the 2nd official link

It actually tells you to register for your speed increase from 2Mb to 10Mb if you want to in My Virgin Media now

Thanks for the link, I used it signed in and got this message.

Good news - you've already registered for your broadband upgrade! Why not check out all the other great stuff in My Virgin Media.

So at least I know I registered correctly.

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Bit perturbed to get an email re the upgrade with a link for me to enter my username/password - bad form for VM with all these phishing emails going around.

Also registration doesn't seem to actually do anything apart from tell you that 'your area will be upgraded in the next couple of months' - I already knew that.

Just a question I have because of the VM customers services insistence on a new 12 month contract. Do they get a commission for getting you to renew the contract (I know lots of Mobile phone companies reward telephone staff if they get you to say yes to a new contract).?

But it's not a new contract is it?

BenMcr 07-05-2009 11:46

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

The 2-10Mbit change if done through the website it not a new contract.

STB to SACM swaps done correctly are not a new contract

Depending on your services, if you speak to Customer Services and they upgrade you to BB L (instead of registering through the website) then it may be a new contract

Yes, 5 minutes to plug it in (replacing STB), then a quick call with the MAC, a few reboots and then all was OK

I phoned CSC to see wen I am going to be upgraded to the Free 10 Mb upgrade, and I was told that I am on it!

The lad from CSC put me through to Technical Support who sent me to: http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginmedia/gofaster/

and got the message:

Size: M speed increase - 2Mb to 10Mb
Oops, we're sorry but we can't recognize which broadband package you are on.
If you are a size: M customer ring 0845 4541111* and select option 4 to speak to one of our advisors.
If you're on size: L, XL or XXL broadband just check out My Virgin Media for all your latest news and free stuff!
* For phone charges please visit www.virginmedia.com/callcost
-------------------------
The lad from Technical Support said that a New Cable Modem would be with me by next wednesday, plus he said "your area will be upgraded in the next couple of months"

Both CSC and Technical Support were from England, Both of them were friendly, 2 nise lads I was pleasantly surprised.

I appear to be upgraded to the 10meg, however this must be a throttle period as you will see by my results.

One thing though, when I click on a download link I appear to be downloading at what I was on before, the upload seems to be working as per upgraded speed, any ideas?

OK spoke to VM again today and was told that I did not need to get my service upgraded as I had already been put on to the 10meg 'M' service. Then the man I spoke to said that he would never book a self install for an upgrade as it could be very difficult (he later said he know nothing about cable as he lived in a non cable area) and so would need an engineer install at £30.00. I said is there no way I could do myself and in the end he agreed to send out a modem self install kit but could not confirm if it would contain a splitter etc.

I wish I could understand the end piece of this message, you say there is no way you could install yourself, then you end by saying they are sending a self install kit.

Was it that you couldn't do it without the kit, or not at all?

And I wonder why the guy said it would be difficult, as most folks say it's no problem as long as you have the plastic spanner, then again he knew nothing about cable so that perhaps explains it.

My uploads seem to be faster but not the downloads.

Sorry I was in a rush.

To start with he told me that there was no way to do a self install from a STB to a cable modem as it was too difficault, but in the end agreed to send out a self install cable modem. But he said I would most likely have to call back to book an engineer install.

VMboy 07-05-2009 14:41

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Ok, I thought it was the cable modem only, yeah, anything involving the STB will require an engineer I would have thought.

Will there be a charge for this call? I would think there shouldn't be because you are not an engineer, and that is what these guys get paid for is it not.

No need for an engineer, I did the install in under 5 mins with the self install kit (switching from a STB) and then just went through the telephone process to activate - simple!

If you were to download a file from a hosting service, do you see the transfer speed faster than before?

I use Firefox, and I expected to see faster speeds for download than 200kbps that I had previously.

Or is it the processor power speed that determines this, or is it that I need the newer modem?

garyeuph 07-05-2009 15:01

Re: Free 2 to 10 upgrade

Speeds - Well, I cannot check now, but I got connected at about 9pm last night, and I initially got much worse downloads than previously:mad: - However, after about half an hour I was getting about 6Mb downloads from usenet.

I havent really tested the connection yet, but it is faster - I guess any congestion is more noticeable with the potentially faster speeds (I always got the maximum on the STB till the STM kicked in)

Only one big disadvantage, you missed out on the chance to be pre-upgraded. I don't see why you wouldn't want to register now.

I think the reason they say you need an upgrade is because they want everyone on the same modems and not because your present modem cant handle it. VM would help themselves a lot more if they viewed their customers as adults and told them the real reason. The idea that we are all yoofs who should hang on every word their `boffins` utter is extremely patronising.

Isn't it also the fact that with these new cm's,that the customer can't log into them and check things out for themselves when their BB service goes tna up,they just have to take VM's word for the fault or not as it has been said .

Open a browser and in the address bar put or click just the link > http://192.168.100.1/ the password and username are both root if required.

If only it was that simple ,"DPA and all that",is what i was told in an email response as to why i had to write to VM, a few months back!

As unless "I" , the (deaf) customer could not verify (over the phone)to VM staff (DPA and all that they said) certain security questions, then i would have to write to them ,as they (VM) don't have email facilities to deal with my questions about services that i had or was due to have !

So i know how pointless it would be of me to try and get this new CM's mac address registered :banghead:

The virgin rep I spoke to ~24 hours ago, understood I mean't the free upgrade (extra £2), happing from May and continuing over the summer, he also understood I called because the "upgrade from 2Mb to 10Mb" link wasn't functioning as it returned it didn't recognize my speed.

The are no timescales given and you are best clicking on the sign up link.

You may be the first ex-ntl (I've heard off across 3 forums) to be upgraded :)

Unless there is anyone here that can confirm they are ex-ntl and have been upgraded already!

Are you guys not aware of the other usernames and passwords on the Ambits, along with the SNMP read and read/write community strings?

Okay, so I've actually been upgraded to the true L and not the M 10Mb, great, thank you, Mr Stupid, misleading Virgin Media employee, who told me he knew I was talking about the free, 2Mb-10Mb, taking place over the summer, migration. :(

Sorry Smiler I'm not sure what your issue is?

You've been told the upgrade will happen within 2 months, were you ever told it would happen immediately apart from random tech support person who likely won't know?

Your area doesn't have the DOCSIS 3 and 50Mbit upgrade yet I don't think, it'd be insane for VM to upgrade your area until you do.

Just as another twist when I got home from work there was a message left from VM saying that they had checked and there were no self installs from stb to stb + cable modem and an engineer would call next weds to install it but it would be done at no charge!

Wierd they could not just say that too start with.

So your saying the 2 to 10 upgrade is linked also to the DOCSIS 3 upgrade (I didn't know that). I'll keep checking my modem settings in that case. Thanks.

In that upgrading hundreds of 2Mbit customers who are sharing 38Mbit to 10Mbit is an incredibly bad idea from the capacity point of view yes. Doing the uplift without the bucket load of extra capacity the DOCSIS 3 upgrade gives is suicidal.

Not that it's impossible of course ;) but with Virgin's average node size it doesn't seem wise to me.

CSC are no help at all, I need to talk to someone more literate.
BTW, apparently it's impossible to be upgraded until it is done automatically, dumb employees, so illiterate.

Oh wow, Virgin need to sort out their employees, do an IQ test beforehand.

*EDIT/UPDATE*

I have came to the conclusion that we will see the upgrades starting from north to south since the area code seems to go higher the further south you go (although, thats just from what I've been reading on the AVforums...).

well, what ever way it going (north to south or vice versa) thank **** I live in the west midlands... I'll see the upgrade when its about 50% through!. (well, if it is that the area codes go from north to south or VV...)

If you want to be technical, then great, but it's actually ntl Incorporated.
And what does it really matter if I said NTL or Virgin? No difference.

Virgin is owned by Sir Richard Branson, it matters, NTL is leasing the name from Sir Richard Branson.

The name ntl Incorporated is not registered with Companies House, but NTL CABLE PLC is registered with Companies House

But I did find this what backs you up!
