Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
There are many calls for Israel to ceasefire but strangely no-one is calling for Hamas to cease firing rockets into Israel.
Surely this is a case for a UN peace-keeping force being put into Gaza to find the terrorists. In that way Israel will have no need to mount air attacks or mount a ground invasion. In doing so, the UN force can provide independent information as to what is being done in the region and hopefully we can find the truth in all this. |

Yep, I reckon they will now be in their harbour areas preparing. Its certainly the only way forward for Israel, apart from diplomacy of course. I think the only thing that will stop them is Obama. Possibly he may put a bit of pressure on. I certainly dont think the UN will have the slightest effect, no one else takes any notice nowadays, so why should Israel. On a rather unrelated point, the new U.S. Predator (The Global hawk) has over 250 missions painted on its side, armed with AMRAAMS, it flies at 60,000 ft from Edwards Air force base to Iraq, & back. It can stay airborne for 2 days. Its sister (Photo Reckon) can gather Intel & direct weapons fire. The pilots sit in a cabin, at Edwards AFB, & change shifts. |

Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
Given a democratically-elected organisation whose very existence is founded on anti-semitism
(From wiki;- Hamas founding charter Article 7 of the Hamas Covenant states the following: "The Day of Judgement will not come about until Muslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Muslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (the Cedar tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Muslem). Article 22 claims that the French revolution, the Russian revolution, colonialism and both world wars were created by the Zionists. It also claims the Freemasons and Rotary clubs are Zionist fronts. "You may speak as much as you want about regional and world wars. They were behind World War I, when they were able to destroy the Islamic Caliphate, making financial gains and controlling resources. They obtained the Balfour Declaration, formed the League of Nations through which they could rule the world. They were behind World War II, through which they made huge financial gains by trading in armaments, and paved the way for the establishment of their state. It was they who instigated the replacement of the League of Nations with the United Nations and the Security Council to enable them to rule the world through them. There is no war going on anywhere, without having their finger in it."[101] Furthermore, Article 32 of the Covenant makes reference to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion: "Today it is Palestine, tomorrow it will be one country or another. The Zionist plan is limitless. After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying.") whose aim is the destruction of Israel and all Jews, and which has been firing missiles into Israel on a daily basis, what would YOU do? (AFAIK the Nazi party in Germany was also democratically elected. Does that mean we should not have opposed Hitler?) |

They either hope they won't be attacked, basically using these people as a human shield, or they are hit in which case they have propaganda material. Also, acceptable counties at war target military targets and attempt to reduce innocent deaths. Hamas, like all terrorist groups, attempt to kill innocent people with their rocket fire into cities. |

Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
It's absolutely shocking. The US have a vast amount of influence over the Israelis just as the Tehran-Damascus alliance moderate and pull the strings of Hezbollah and Hamas so not only do we have outside influences manipulating these proxy instruments of conflict but there's a lot of historical bad blood which already exists that neither side can see past. All this is with ordinary Palestinian and Israeli people stuck in the middle being killed left, right and centre.
There were reports in the media (including the BBC unsurprisingly) that the Hamas attacks were a response to Israeli incursions which occured before the cease fire expired. Now this seems very suspicious with the upcoming elections. Was this due to the Israelis stirring up trouble knowing that Hamas would respond or is it perhaps the spectre of creative journalism? I guess we'll never know as very few sections of the media can be trusted. |

TVNZ 14th November 2008 "Hamas fired Grad rockets at Israel on Friday, the longest range missile they have ever claimed to shoot at the Jewish state, a statement from the armed wing of the Islamist group said. Israeli rescue services said five rockets struck the southern coastal city of Ashkelon but caused no casualties, as gunmen escalated rocket attacks in response to Israeli strikes that have killed 10 militants since Novomber 4. A Hamas statement said its fighters had shot five 1960s-era Soviet-made Grad rockets at an Israeli town." Globalsecurity gives a fuller explanation. |

Re: Scores die in Israeli air strikes
Shocking though this is, it's even more shocking that the Palestinians have not done the one thing that would have prevented it all in the first place i.e. stopped the Militants from firing rockets into Israel.
Imagine what would happen if a group of militants set up a base in say, Manchester and began launching missiles at cities in neighbouring countries. The British Government would be expected to stop the militants immediately and in the absence of any effective action the governments of the countries affected would then take action to deal with them. It's possible that in the course of that action innocent British lives would be lost and British property destroyed. If the Palestinian government could not deal with the Militants why did they not request aid from the UN? Why did countries objecting to the air strikes not offer to put their troops on the ground to stop the militants? All of this was preventable. Why then was it that effective preventative action was not taken? |

Every time Hamas adopts a military solution to solve its differences with Israel, it just reinforces the Israeli view that Palestininians mean them harm, which is why the Israelis tend to respond in kind but to a much greater degree. The protests around the world have alerted governments to the public desire to resolve this problem. The Palestinians have the attention of the world. Why do they need to keep firing missiles? Why not use the UN or sympathetic countries to obtain humanitarian aid? Continuing to fire missiles distracts from the need to address the crisis and focuses on the military conflict. |

Lots of things happen in the Middle East that the rest of the world is unaware of. I'm just one of the millions of people round the world who want the killing of Palestinians and Israelis to stop. From the TV reports I can see the conditions of hardship that the Palestinians are living under. The lack of basic amenities like electricity, running water, food, medicine, housing etc all contribute to put an unbearable burden on the people living there.I can only imagine how hard daily life is and how worrying & stressful the situation must be. But the firing of missiles does not improve matters. It simply makes them worse. As things stand, the bitterness between Palestinians & Israelis is such that they will be locked into a lifelong struggle with generations of future children on both sides being committed to the war effort. Money and resources which could be used to rebuild life in Gaza will be wasted on weapons. Someone, somewhere has to have a vision of peace and be brave enough to say that enough is enough ; that war is not the best way to resolve differences, but sadly I think a lot of people are going to die unneccessarily before that happens. Let's hope a mutually peaceful solution comes sooner rather than later. |

Israel have used Chemical weapons against Hezbollah in 2006, so they dont mind using this stuff. There is no link as yet, this was a repot on PRESS TV. But, they have found traces of depleted Uranium in some Gazan residents who have been injured by the ammunition. http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id...onid=351020202 It sure looks like Phosporus - dont you think? White phosphorus is an indiscriminate killer that ignites once it is exposed to oxygen, producing such heat that it bursts into a yellow flame and produces a dense white smoke. It causes painful burn injuries to exposed human flesh, as discovered by Lebanon's Children at the hands of Israeli Phosphorus Bombs in 2006. White Phosphorus is considered a chemical weapon by most governments around the world. Its use in civilian areas is banned by the Geneva Treaty of 1980. The United Nations considers such weapons illegal. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_phosphorus The emotive phrase 'chemical weapon' is a difficult one - strictly speaking gunpowder/cordite/tnt/napalm are all 'chemical weapons', but not in the way nerve gases, etc are, in that they rely on explosive or incendiary effects, rather than toxicity. |

Enough already - everybody.
Let's try to keep this nice and friendly shall we? It would be extremely helpful (and less likely to attract negative arttention) if people were to debate/discuss the topic at hand and not start levelling personal accusations against each other whatever the reason. Debating/discussing someone's views/opinions is fine, 'attacking' them is synonymous with attacking the person themselves and won't be tolerated. We've asked nicely for people to be a little bit more respectful of each other, and more mindful of the sensitive nature of the topic being discussed, the very next person to forget that request will find themselves firmly in my bad books ;) |

The propaganda surrounding this conflict is no help at all. We have people on both sides lying for their causes. The problem is compounded when small minded people believe this crap & start waving the flag.
Forget the past. Look at whats happening now. If Israel wanted to kill Civillians, they would never send in ground troops. The troops would stay safe while air power reduces the place to rubble. The fact that they have now started a ground offensive is to root out the people who are terrorising Civillians in Israel. They have already stated that their mission is, to stop Hamas firing rockets into their land. They are doing exactly what any country would do. Some people are posting totally unsubstantiated, unrelated rubbish to try & bolster their arguments. Lets keep to the facts relating to this conflict eh. |
