There's nothing like a bad loser, unless of course it's you.

Djokovic didn't lose this final, Murray won it.

Just read the comments on BBC website re "Sir" Andy's victory and can't believe how many feel the need to denigrate such a superb performance both physically and more importantly mentally. Certainly Ivan Lendl has been such an influence in the way not only in his on court play but also on his attitude during the game.

He could have so easily have gone out in the quarter final having gone down 2 sets. however coming back to win made me view Andy in a new light. After that match I felt confident that he could lift the trophy.

Well done, All the in UK and NI should be so so proud of him today.

Well done Murray. Like some of the earlier posters have already said, Djokovic didn't lose it, Murrray well and truly won it. The tennis from both players was incredible, yes Novak made mor unforced errors, but the man under pressure to win the tournament from the moment he stepped out to play his first match was Murray. He handled the pressure, he played the shots, he came good when it mattered, he broke back after he was broken.... He also made mistakes, but to beat Djokovic in 3 straight sets in any match, let alone the final is amazing!

If Bradley Wiggins became knighted for winning the Tour De France, then I don't see no reason why Andy shouldn't become a Sir. I'd say he was under more pressure to win Wimbledon then Wiggins was to win the Tour De France. When you couple the expectation with the pressure, everyone has to admit that winning it is remarkable.

Last I'm saying on the subject. Why should sports people get knighthoods for winning sport events? What does that say to doctors, nurses, ambulance, police, fire brigade and the armed forces fighting in Iraq Afghanistan? We thank you for doing your job with crap pay, even crapper work conditions but you won't get an honour because you haven't won a sporting event.

About time we stopped rewarding sports people with honours and give them to the people who matter most, like everyone I've mentioned. Winning a tennis trophy. Big deal. Ditto for sitting on your backside on a bike and winning a race that hardly anyone cares about.

Re: Tennis

Sir Bradley Wiggins was given his knighthood after a number of successes. It wasn't just the Tour de France, or even the 2012 Olympics, but previous wins as well. Most other knighthoods for sporting personalities are also given towards the end of a very successful career such as to Sir Steve Redgrave. There will usually be other factors as well such as working with charity, helping to develop the sport, etc.

Murray is now tasting the success of his efforts and all congratulations and applause should go to him. But in the context of the above a knighthood would seem premature.

Murray has also won the US Open and a Gold and Silver medal at the Olympic Games. If you're going to give Wiggins a Knighthood then Murray deserves one as well. Lets also remember that Wimbledon is held in higher regard by British people than the Tour de France is and a British winner of Wimbledon probably comes second only to the World Cup in terms of Sporting achievements we want to see.

Exactly. Echoing Mark's earlier post, I think giving out Kighthoods to sportsman should be assessed, but a precedent has now been set. Along those lines I don't see why Murray shouldnt be given a knighthood. He has won a gold at the Olympics, the US Open, Wimbledon - not counting the grand slam finals he lost. THis in an era of amazing opponents. He has been in the top 3 of world tennis players for a while now and has been the best British tennis player of modern times.

This. To most British people winning Wimbledon after a 77 year British drought is a far bigger deal than being the first Briton to win the TdF. The reality is that the UK does not have much of a tradition in cycling, and it's only in recent years that it's become more popular (and successful).

As much as I like cycling, I think Murray's win is far more significant for the British public, and he's at least as deserving of a knighthood as a result.

Re: Tennis

In terms of knighthoods handed out for sporting achievement in the modern era, what Andy Murray has done in the past 12 months has got to be up there.

In August he won Great Britain's first male singles Gold in over 100 years. On the same day he helped win our first medal in doubles mixed in over 90 years. By winning the US Open he became our first Slam winner in over 70 years and I really don't need to say anything about Sundays victory that isn't already known.

Murray is on the brink of being world number 1. If he achieves this it'll be the first time a Brit has been on top of the pile for over 70 years.

They would have lost in the very first round if James Ward hadn't beaten John Isner of the USA. A player ranked way above him, all of the Murrays opponents where much lower ranked players so in my book James Ward is the stand out player in this teams success. :p:

On a brighter note, at least for the rest of us, well done to Heather Watson for becoming Wimbledon mixed doubles champion :cleader::cleader:

Heather winning certainly great, especially her dress for the party last night (if you are shallow like me lol)

I never used to like him, he's gone up in my estimations a lot since the anyone but England and Paraguay shirt days. What he said about fred perry helped, being photographed in a west ham shirt helped even more and his general attitude towards younger players has been exemplary. Can't stand his mum though, pushy old bag.

Maria Sharapova NOT given a wildcard for the French Open this year.

IMO the right decision.

My views on Murray are well known (and I won't be cheering him on anytime soon) but even I have to admit he did well at the French Open considering he was struggling for fitness and form before the tournament.

Also, nice to see unseeded player in the Women's final tomorrow.

FINALS

Men's Singles

Stanislas Wawrinka (3, SUI) v Rafael Nadal (4, ESP)

Women's Singles

Jelena Ostapenko (LAT) v Simona Halep (3, ROM)

Had a little double on wawrinka winning 3-2 and Nadal winning 3-0, paid out surprisingly little though considering...

Well that was a waste of time, Federer and Djokovic both through after a set and a couple of games.

I wonder how much of the stupid amounts of money the two cry offs will get for that?

Absolute masterclass of a choke by Fabio Fognini here. Gets worse for him too. Literally fell apart for him. He was close to taking Murray all the way to a fifth.

Murray will need to up his game several notches the way Nadal is playing ATM. Still a gutsy fight back from 5-2 down in 4th by Murray.

Sadly he won't be winning it this year IMO.

Well that was a surprise, great match and a deserved win by Gilles Muller, so that only leaves Federer cruising. Murray looks vulnerable as does Djokovic.

Yes it was certainly a epic match as my mother was supposed to phone us up 2 hours earlier then the match finished but like many of us put everything on hold until the match finally finished.:)

Excellent news, first British woman to be a Wimbledon semi finalist since Virginia Wade in 1978. And more importantly, not that I am biased or anything, it stops Halep getting the World #1 spot.

Women's game is usually slow, boring and predictable, but I have really enjoyed watching Konta absolutely going for it.

Injury finally took it's toll, Murray way off the pace, well played by Querrey though.

Sadly he was struggling with a limp throughout the match and was way off the pace.

At least he completed his match unlike several others this Wimbledon, wether that is brave or foolish only time will tell.
