Re: The Euro 2008 thread

it's about time the Dutch team found some cohesion. the past 10 to 15 years they just have not gelled well as a team. individually, there was a point in the late 90's i think it was where on paper, the Dutch team was the most expensive national side, but they just couldn't play well together. Van Basten has the sight to see not so much who is best, but who plays well together, and it makes all the difference. And in a way, I'm kind of glad Babel was injured. Boularouz has been outstanding so far.

Just a pity the Germans had to cheat to score the third goal.

Watching John Terry, Carvalleo [sp] Diddling Dogbreath et al, makes me think that the first thing Jose taught his players was how to push defenders out of the way without getting caught.

Netherlands v Russia

So on to tonight's game… Netherlands v Russia. Got a nice ring to it hasn't it? The best team of Euro 2008 so far against the most improved. Guus Hiddink pits his wits against his countrymen. A repeat of the 1988 final. I'm so excited, I feel a bit sick.

Who do you reckon will win

Holland or Russia

True indeed. I would have thought that v.Basten would have realised at half time that Ruud plowing a lone furrow in the centre proved to be totally ineffective and ultimately he paid the price. Hopefully the russkies will get a good tonking in the semis.

Agreed, even if it might have been because he thought the ball had gone out of play which I don't think it had, the Russian defender hardly brushed the Dutch player. Its bad enough for Kolodin that he misses the next game.

They have something like 8 players out. At this rate they will have to put the sub keeper on as a defender :erm:

I wonder if they will be allowed to call up some more players

I think they should have let the manager play upfront. He looked like he could have been a good presence in the 6 yard box.

It was sad to see Turkey go out, but you have to give it to the Germans - getting results even when they were poor.

It looks that way :)

Russia (and Arashvin in particular) didn't have the edge they had against the Dutch. Then again, Hiddink knowing the Dutch game so well, may just have given them the extra advantage which they lacked today.

Let's hope Spain go on and win it now :) Cmon, the Spain!

Re: The Euro 2008 thread

The dominance of the Dutch in the group stages was quite surprising really. They pretty much relied on their attacking game and got away with it because when you look at their back four on paper it doesn't really inspire a great deal of confidence, with the likes of Ooijer, Van Bronckhurst (ouch) and Johnny Heitinga not firing on all cylinders you could say it was easy pickings for Arshavin in the Q.Final game. Tonight he was up against the likes of Ramos, Marchena, Puyol and Senna.. after a couple of challenges he wasn't interested and never got into the game.

Possibly. I have to admit that I (and pretty much everybody in Holland) was surprised by how well Holland played in the group phase. Which is why it was such a disappointment to see them outplayed so comprehensively by Russia. Ah well, we'll be back. I hear South Africa is nice this time of the year. You may have won in the group stage, but we won the Final. :p:

This is going way OT.:D and the conflict I referred to was much later and specifically in South Africa.:p:

So you have not dominated world trade since 1713.

Anyways, who is going to win the final, can we alter the poll?

I would like to see Spain win it but the old adage, "football is a simple game, 22 men kick a ball about for 90 minutes and then the Germans win", seems like being true once more.:(

Can a mod please remove the poll, as it was added by an idiot? (oh. I started the thread if that is relevant)

It would be a travesty if Germany win it. They've been poor throughout. Spain deserve to win it. Cmon Spain!

I just heard that tomorrows final is the last game John Motson is going to be commentating on, ever! Good news! :D :cleader:

How very dare you! :redcard: Motty is an institution.

It's not actually his last commentating, but it is his last live work. He'll still be doing match of the day stuff.

Motson will continue to commentate on Match of the Day and Radio 5 Live - "I don't want to make it sound like I'm disappearing for ever," he says - but in opting not to work on the 2010 World Cup, he is aware it is the end of an era somewhat.

I think i can quite confidently say that he is the worst commentator i have ever heard in my life. The other night in the Spain v Italy match for the whole of the second half he was calling Senna, Silva. You may think it's an easy mistake to make but seeing that Senna is black and plays defensive midlfield and Silva is white and plays on the wing, it's not that easy to make. And that's just one of the numerous mistakes he makes during matches, that along with pointing the bleeding obvious out all the time, his useless facts he comes out with and constantly missing key moments in the game i find it hard to understand how he's still the BBC's number one. I just thank god David Pleat is on ITV because if those two were put together i would have to avoid every match they commentate on together, Mark Lawernson, although himself not that great, makes it slightly more bareable listening to Motson.

Bad news about the match of the day stuff :(

Actually, the BBC have a little bit of a habit of employing commentators who get things wrong, but at least Murray Walker was entertaining (if not always correct). Motty doesn't have that.

I personally thought the Turkey/Germany game was far better when the BBC lost vision and BBC one switched to the BBC Five Live coverage of the game.

Give me a maverick football commentator any day of the week, it adds to the entertainment value, in my opinion. Motson has had me in stitches some times. Much better than the high pitch squeals of the newly appointed Jacqui Oatley, and the less said about Johnathan Pearce, the better.

Motty does get on my wick and always has done. Especially the way he inserts extra letters in players' names like calling Xavi: Xarvi or Dietman Hamann: Harmann.
