Can't be that bad: watching the carthorse Toni aimlessly hack his way around the 6 yard box is quite comical.

Re: The Euro 2008 thread
I thought der Germans deserved it tonight. Personally I think the Dutch have carried a fair bit of luck so far, they enjoy playing on the break as do Russia...looking forward to it.
Against my advice, my mate had a fiver on Toni to be top scorer:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D At least my shout, Podolski, is still in with a chance (although poor tonight0 |
Re: The Euro 2008 thread
it's about time the Dutch team found some cohesion. the past 10 to 15 years they just have not gelled well as a team. individually, there was a point in the late 90's i think it was where on paper, the Dutch team was the most expensive national side, but they just couldn't play well together. Van Basten has the sight to see not so much who is best, but who plays well together, and it makes all the difference. And in a way, I'm kind of glad Babel was injured. Boularouz has been outstanding so far.
|
Re: The Euro 2008 thread
Told my dad not to bet on Portugal and he didnt listen :D
|
Re: The Euro 2008 thread
Just a pity the Germans had to cheat to score the third goal.
Watching John Terry, Carvalleo [sp] Diddling Dogbreath et al, makes me think that the first thing Jose taught his players was how to push defenders out of the way without getting caught. Jim. |
Re: The Euro 2008 thread
What about those Turks, not good for the old blood pressure but they just will not lie down. Not sure how many players they will have left for the next game.
So, two group winners out already, are you sweating Holland.:D Jim. |
Re: The Euro 2008 thread
nahhh not yet ... russians should be do-able.
|
Netherlands v Russia
So on to tonight's game… Netherlands v Russia. Got a nice ring to it hasn't it? The best team of Euro 2008 so far against the most improved. Guus Hiddink pits his wits against his countrymen. A repeat of the 1988 final. I'm so excited, I feel a bit sick.
Who do you reckon will win Holland or Russia |
Re: Netherlands v Russia
What's wrong with just discussing this here:

Re: The Euro 2008 thread
Estimated to be over 150,000 Dutch supporters in Basle tonight.
Win or lose, they will not leave the city in the state the Glasgow morons left Manchester a few weeks ago. I couldn't find this thread at first, how come its been moved to Lifestyle instead of Sports. |

Good decision by the ref, after talking the assistant, to change his mind over the second yellow card.
Though Holland were dire... |
Re: The Euro 2008 thread
:bigcry: Russia were better though. The genius of Hiddink, or did Holland just didn't hit the form they managed against Italy and France? I'm gutted either way. Still proud to wear the shirt though. :tu:

Is it because I'm neutral (apart from the odd flutter) or has this tournie been stupendous? |

Might have to support the Germans now. After all, they did spawn Bach. |

I think Russia may fancy another go at Spain, they were no better than Italy tonight. Jim. |
Re: The Euro 2008 thread
Well done Spain. They deserved the win for being the most positive team. They were also due a win against Italy. Apparently, they've not had one since 1920. Most importantly though: There wil not be a Germany-Italy final. Everybody wins :cleader: :)
|
Re: The Euro 2008 thread
Gutted to see Holland go out. I would like to see the Russians win it now :). There has been a few jokes going around the office about a certain Russian Billionaire paying other teams off :D. That made me laugh

Its a shame the Turks dotn have a team to put out against Germany this week, otherwise you could see that being a cracker of a game.

Lehmann has been half decent for the majority of this tournament but it had to be tonight when he showed his true colours. As for those in front of him, Metzelder and Mertesacker: that pair are always going to struggle against anyone with an ounce of quality.

Tomorrow's match should be interesting. Let's hope the champion's come from that match...

Russia (and Arashvin in particular) didn't have the edge they had against the Dutch. Then again, Hiddink knowing the Dutch game so well, may just have given them the extra advantage which they lacked today. Let's hope Spain go on and win it now :) Cmon, the Spain! |
Re: The Euro 2008 thread
The dominance of the Dutch in the group stages was quite surprising really. They pretty much relied on their attacking game and got away with it because when you look at their back four on paper it doesn't really inspire a great deal of confidence, with the likes of Ooijer, Van Bronckhurst (ouch) and Johnny Heitinga not firing on all cylinders you could say it was easy pickings for Arshavin in the Q.Final game. Tonight he was up against the likes of Ramos, Marchena, Puyol and Senna.. after a couple of challenges he wasn't interested and never got into the game.

Hmm I was in Durban and Jo'Burg this time of year a few years ago and the weather was a bit pants. Not cold or anything but dull and miserable. I don't think the players would be complaining though, remember the heat in Mexico 86? (if you're as old as me ;) )

So you have not dominated world trade since 1713. Anyways, who is going to win the final, can we alter the poll? I would like to see Spain win it but the old adage, "football is a simple game, 22 men kick a ball about for 90 minutes and then the Germans win", seems like being true once more.:( Jim. |

Actually, the BBC have a little bit of a habit of employing commentators who get things wrong, but at least Murray Walker was entertaining (if not always correct). Motty doesn't have that. I personally thought the Turkey/Germany game was far better when the BBC lost vision and BBC one switched to the BBC Five Live coverage of the game. |
