Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Don't forget upload counts as well.
Uploading at least 1250MB of traffic will get you reduced to 5mb as well.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Upload is ok unless u upload lots of pics or have something to upload, i barely upload that much in a month :)

but the 2meg customers shouldent have a limit... 300megs is nothing 300megs is not even 1 tv ep..

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

In the end if your UBR is over subscribed and you are getting below 4Mb then you'll still get the same whether they put you on 10 or 20Mb speed. In fact upgrading all the 4Mb's on an over subscribed UBR is likely to make it a lot worse.

Will though it make a difference to a lot of us?? Those who just use the internet for web browsing, downloading a song off Itunes, getting game demo from file planet or playing WoW online probably will never notice the difference as just about all the websites/downloads/games are limited to a Mb or two per single connection. It's really only those who use newsgroups and/or torrents for whom it will make a difference as they're using multi connections from the same source.

I wonder though how many of those screaming "WHEN WILL I BE UPGRADED" would actually notice the difference???

Just do what I do then and download them overnight, no limit and you're not adding to the already congested 4pm-9pm.

I know it's not ideal but if you don't want STM then there's always ADSL (but then you've got crazy FUP limits set to about 40GB a month which means you can't download a lot per night)

It is unlimited, hit the cap or not, you can still download as much as you like to your heats content, you download unlimited.

They just reducing the speed during peek hours, aint stopping you downloading anything at all.

Who said they r upgrading people on oversubscribed UBRs? Why do u think they are upgrading all the UBRs first of all?

I really dont think they are that stupid.

I am using a NTL:Home 120 modem. Is that likely to be the problem?
It shouldn't be. That's what I'm using and I get a pretty consistent download speed of 1,100-1,200 KB/s at any time of day (traffic shaping aside), which is very close to the maximum you could expect from a 10 Mb/s connection.

Quote:

If I've been upgraded why is the download rate still so low?
It depends how you're measuring the download rate. Outside of the traffic shaping hours, try downloading one of the game demos hosted on Virgin Media's own servers, Half Life 2 for example: -

http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blu...alflife2/demo/

You don't have to download it all obviously, just let the download speed level out and see how fast it is. For me right now it's hovering around the 1,210 KB/s mark. Also, remember that it's an "up to" 10Mb/s service. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that you will ever achieve anywhere near to the theoretical maximum speed.

You could also give TCP Optimizer a try, which is a free program for optimising a broadband Internet connection. It's available here: -

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

Instructions here: -

http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in_q.p...ory=100&qid=33

It's really easy to use. It literally takes 30 seconds and one reboot, and that's it. It may not make any difference, but it's worth a try. It'll back up your current settings too, in the unlikely event that it actually makes things slower.

£20 a month for 20meg is nothing ! my cousins in uk pay that for VM £20 for 20 megs but they already had a ntl phone line before... and adsl isps doing 24megs for 15 for light packages i think uk is more then affordable even for the VM XL package, even the old VM customers paying £50? or is it £40? a month is do able.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Well, re earlier posts here, we've now worked out the source of the problem. It's the router. When the cable modem is connected directly to one computer, we get a speed of 9.7 as compared to a speed of 5.4 when modem is linked through router to either of our two computers.

The router (Netgear) handbook hasn't been much help, so we're waiting for friend who's an IT technician to call round.

Thanks to all who tried to help.

I got the upgrade today, but my pings to other servers are very poor most of today. Games servers that I previously go 20 to 40 are now at 150 to 200.

Though speedtest reports 10 meg, but it did have higher than normal ping. The connection is through a linksys router and both it and the modem were rebooted this morning when I got the speed upgrade.

This thread makes me laugh. If they hadn't told you that you were getting a free upgrade you wouldn't have known anything and therefor would've thought nothing of it until the day your Modem clicked onto 10meg and then you might be inclined to phone them up and check you hadn't been upgraded accidentally.

It's a FREE upgrade, have some patience, it will come through in due course, this sort of thing has to be organised, they can't really just chuck 10meg configs at every modem in the country at once and expect there not to be problems!

banjo 03-03-2008 09:32

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I am glad that you are happy :) , but if they advertise for a month that 4meg will be upgraded to 10meg in February then they should do what they say.

If they cannot do the upgrades then as you say they should have said nothing, I wonder if someone were to contact the advertisement regulators if Virgin could be in for a nasty fine. If they can't walk the walk then don't talk the talk.

maybe they had a few unexpected problems along the way which has delayed them and instead of saying so on the web site chose not to and only tell people when they ring to ask about ther upgrade.

I'm in Coventry, I've just rebooted my modem, and I certainly haven't been upgraded:

What's the point of having that status page if it's giving incorrect details?

Sorry to take up more space on this topic, but this is what I get when checking with SpeedTest. Not sure that Dublin is the closest server to Fife, but SpeedTest says it is.

hmmm, thats odd, your download Bit Rate at 10240000 bps is right, as thats 10Mbit/s.

but your Upload Bit Rate at 384000 bps seems wrong as thats nearer the old speed not the new 512Kbit/s upload rate it should be, is every ones upload rate outside the xC&W/xNTL areas that same lower speed setting?

Same as, although if the are doing it by account holder name then that begins with a W so i'd imagine it would be nearly last on the list. If it's something else then at least i know i'm not the only one left to do.

Does anyone know how it's actually being done? as in is it location or name or more of a hit and miss?

It didn't for me. A guy on DigitalSpy said that my area had been upgraded, but my modem configs still showed that I was on 4MB until I unplugged the modem for 30 seconds and plugged it back in. Even on the upgrade schedule page it says that you may need to reboot.

Further to the above:- it seems they have had so many people telling them it hasn't worked, they no longer want anyone else to report in!
Ho hum! At least it's happened for a few people.Time for a few more choruses of "things can only get better."

i might have this wrong but I've just read that the announcement to upgrade edinburgh was wrong and shouldn't have been posted on the evenfaster page  kinda funny considering i know several people in edinburgh who have had the upgrade and are on the same ubr as me  Also they confirmed earlier in the newsgroup that edinburgh WAS supposed to be upgraded :erm:

It's a FREE upgrade, have some patience, it will come through in due course, this sort of thing has to be organised, they can't really just chuck 10meg configs at every modem in the country at once and expect there not to be problems!

If If If If  if they hadnt have announced it they would be able to market the product in its new form.

At the end of the day some people are paying and receiving up to 10Mb and others are paying the same and getting up to 4Mb. There is no reason why everyone couldn't be upgraded at the same time to ensure everyone gets the same service for the £'s they pay

Erm, you will find that most Infrastructure and Development projects/programmes eschew the "big bang" approach, as it is much riskier than a staged implementation.

im affraid i dont agree entirely, yes i agree to a sample being upgraded first (ie the trial) and after that its the quicker the better to get the rest upgraded. Im my experience with rollouts, having customers on two levels of service causes more problems than the phased rollout solves

That would normally be true of a normal network, but because the VM is a legacy network they all could react differently. They could do a small trial before the upgrade was announced in each area, but thats still not guaranteed.

I think they are being overly cautious, but they have announced that broadband is their 'hero' product so would be embarresing if the network crashed from an upgrade, especially before to 50mb rollout

Welshchris 07-03-2008 13:39

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

it would even more embarrasing if it crashed because of the 50mb rollout.

On HERE they've now adding the following paragraph:

Quote:

The updated traffic management policy is now in place across the network. The policy for the 10Mb profile of the ‘L’ broadband package is rolled out as the package speeds are increased from 4Mb. More information can be found at www.virginmedia.com/evenfaster on the timescales for the rollout.

As for it being a FREE upgrade well i suppose it is but other places are offering 8mb much cheaper than my £25 4mb connection. hey ho here we go.

Hi I have just gone onto 4MB, and agee companies are offering faster speeds at cheaper prices, but they are down phone lines.

I live 3 miles from the exchange, and would never get near the 8MB speed at that distance.
