Car park and public convenience :)

Thats it, an ice cream van and a burger bar in summer as well. I hear that the council intend to upgrade the car parks and vistors centre soon. It is about 30 mins walk from the Clarence ( big pub ) roundabout, which is close to what appears to be a church on that map, if you cannot make it up to the car park (pay & display) next to the reservoir.

it has been cold, windy & wet all day here - but no snow :)

- as I left work the combination of high tide & a stiff onshore wind was sending waves over the sea wall. :erm:

I was not impressed before, trudged through the snow/slush/blizzards to Argos to buy a suitcase (NYC here I come :hyper: ) and was told I couldn't collect from the back door for "health and safety reasons" :erm: Did they seriously expect me to trudge through the snow with a really heavy box to get back to my car. Yes they did  Quick chat with the manager and they said they would on this occasion. Gee thanks very much.

Deadbrains report on the snow :D

Panic has set in across southern England following an outbreak of powdery white stuff, known in some parts as "snow". Whole communities have been cut off, including most of Kent, as residents were unable to leave their homes for fear of "being cold" or "getting wet"...............

Snows crap in Stoke... woke up to find a light blanket.. deep in parts. Snowed all day, continually... yet it had all but dissappeared off the ground after midday.

However, a few miles up the road there's still loads of the white stuff ;) Great fun in a car :D

Dovestones snow report

3 Attachment(s)
Altis, I decided to have a wander round Dovestones reservoir this afternoon. It is amazing how easy it is to take for granted such breathtaking scenery when it is on your own doorstep. I took these pics at 12 50PM . The main road and the access road to the car park are clear, however if you look at the picture of the car park you may be able to see that some of it is fenced off. In fact less than a third of the normal space is available due to refurbishment taking place. There is another less well known carpark (free) a short distance up the main road at Binn Green which is shown on the A to Z. Speaking to one of the hardy souls I met today, he said that Sunday was always much busier than Saturday. There is a small carpark at the Clarence Hotel which is a 20 to 30 minute walk from the reservoir. At the moment the temp is just above freezing, with sleet in the air. I should think that there will still be enough white stuff up there to make it interesting unless we have a dramatic change in the weather.

That's the overflow vent, absolutely huge. One or two idiots have tried to climb inside it. you can just see in the bottom of the picture a large metal construction, that is a flood release barrier. I found a picture of the overflow vent in operation on picsearch, I will try to find it for you.

Very many thanks for that Iadom.

As it happens, Mrs A came home early this afternoon so we went to Meltham via Greenfield to borrow some skis for her. We must have gone through Greenfield at about 5 o'clock but I didn't recognise you anywhere ;)

The snow did look a bit wet mind so I think we need to look for some height. Our current plan is to meet up at the top of Woodhead on Sunday morning and, if the conditions are okay, glide our way over to the Snake Inn for lunch. Gliding back after lunch should be fun :D

Still, thanks again for the info. It saved us a long trudge up to the N Yorks moors.

Well, we got there and had a great time. We could have done with more snow - especially when we got a bit lower and ended up breaking through it into the heather beneath. Otherwise conditions were excellent. Nice and cold with intermittent strong sunshine. Our lunchtime picnic was very 'alpine'.

The snow only lasted for few minutes at a time (it kept trying through the day), yet it was a really sunny day, which made it seem strange. :)

Well, London, being 2 degrees warmer than anywhere else due to all the bricks, has had snow once since I've lived here. None today, although it was damned frosty first thing. My temperature gauge is reading 4.2 C which is probably a bit higher than ambient, since it's rather near the boiler exhaust. Must move it.

Heathrow is reporting -1, so it's definitely possible that we might have some snow sometime. I can't be more certain than that.

Funnily enough... when I checked the weather this morning (www.accuweather.com) it was forecasting snow fri/sat/etc and when I checked at lunchtime there was no suggestion of any.

Just had the Met Office "severe weather warning" in and it gives us (Midlands) 40% chance of snow from thurs-sat.

Yeah it is certainly going to get colder throughout the rest of the week.
Possibly reaching -3 celcius so be careful of ice !
The cold winds are coming down from the arctic with snow definately possible.
I'm sure however that at onepoint we will have the very annoying (especially when waiting for the bus at an un-sheltered bus stop), freezing cold rain and wind which is just awful.

What are you, Michael Fish? :p:

Go on, try running that back through your head in his voice ...

We already had a taste of cold weather up here. Last Friday night got down to -4, although we're quite sheltered and they had -6 down the road. It stayed surprisingly mild last night even though the skies cleared for part of it.

If this snow they're forecasting actually arrives in any quantity, we'll have more dramas for the media. (Or starts sliding uncontrollably into a ditch, thereby causing the sensible drivers to be held up while the idiots get dragged out.)

Driving in snow isn't that hard - it just requires a bit of care and patience - and losing the lead foot, and leaving more space between cars.

Of course too many drivers have trouble with those concepts, as they demonstrate every morning in any and all driving conditions.

Ooh, I bet you feel better for that rant ... :D

You're right though, I remember there being a snap snowfall the last winter I spent in Hemel that caught all the gritters off guard. It took me about three hours to crawl home from Watford that night and we weren't even the worst affected area.

I'm off to Stockholm later this week. I'll be packing some warm gear, but if there is snow while I'm there I'm not anticipating the city grinding to a halt!

Not really, because I know they'll keep doing it anyway.

Instead of all the roadworks, they could do a lot more to improve the traffic by making it more likely for the idiots to get caught. Maybe if they had to start driving lessons again they'd learn how to drive properly. (Of course this would require the standard of driving tuition to be raised considerably. Like including motorway driving, night driving and skid pan work.)

Me too. No gritting, idiots driving too fast and traffic at a standstill.

I was lucky to find a back road which saved me 2 hours of tailback traffic, but it was very hairy indeed - hence 3 cars in the ditch within a mile of each other. And considering the way my car was behaving at 15mph, I have a pretty good idea how they ended up in there.

After a couple of hours behind the wheel, I got within a mile of my house and then stopped dead in gridlock. I u-turned and tried to go through Picotts End and up the back lanes into Grovehill, but when I got up there I came across white van man and his mate, who had just run their vehicle into a snowdrift and blocked the way. I had to give them a lift back down the lane (as far as a farm where they found a willing farmer with a Land Rover), where I then rejoined the queue and spent another hour getting home. If I'd been dressed for it I'd have abandoned the car on the verge and walked home in about 15 minutes. :fit:

i consider myself to be a decent driver but boy did i get caught out a few years back when it took me 8 hours to drive from hatfield, down the a1 to central london. Deflating the tyres slightly, and taking off in 2nd gear , and leaving my rear wheel drive car at home next time it happened were 3 of the best tips I was given (after frantically calling some "advanced" drivers), but I dont recall reading those in the Highway code or during mey lessons (Fair point considering its not often we used to have those conditions) I think on the onset of winter and freezing weather people should actively get tips on how to drive in extreme weather conditions (i.e snow and ice), as not many people know how to do it.

About two years ago I got stuck for the entire night on the motorway around Paris as the conditions just got so bad all traffic was stuck on the motorway. No one got out their cars as it was freezing.
All mobile networks were flooded and it was chaos. Seeing as I had been traveling since morning and thought I was going to arrive in the evening, I had the worst time ever having to spend the whole of the night in the car.

Yeah, SWW, although I do love the white stuff, I know what you mean... last year we had a sudden snow storm here in Swindon - couldn't have been more than a couple of inches at most, but it fell very suddenly. Took me hours to get home, despite living about 2 miles away from where I worked :(

It's fine if it snows overnight, cause then you just phone your boss to say you're staying at home all day, and then you don't get caught up in all the problems. Luckily, my boss now lives in a secluded village about 15 miles from the office, so he'd not be at work in any case :D

Scunthorpe officially ground to a halt when it snowed at the start of this year - my usual 30(ish) minute journey to work was fine until I got to Scunthorpe. It then took me 2½ hours to drive 2½ miles, purely because none of the morons driving had a clue about how to cope in snow.

Know the feeling, that said when I was in Canada over winter a few years ago I had an interesting journey with someone who was under the assumption that using the handbrake was an accepted way for turning corners on un-ploughed roads.

Yeh, these valley dwellers and city slickers don't know what it's all about ;)

I'm not bothered by any amount of snow, as i'm out of work.

(where I worked my boss lives near Stevenage and won't be able to get in if the weather is to bad. I live around the corner from the place.)

Same here. No snow. But as I opened my window (Im in the loft so can see over the city) its as if the city is drowned in a huge swimming pool of fog.

Conkers

Well, I suppose that, in this weather, they'll definitely need baking in the oven :disturbd:

I don't think it's very nice suggesting that Si needs a bra ;) :p:

Although I must admit that Nugs woolly hat collection has come out of hibernation :)

Dare I ask what makes a bad bra, and why you'd ever wear one? :erm: :disturbd: :D

I'd have thought a pair of pants would make a bad bra (well, unless you were a really weird shape :disturbd: )

Below 16C one hour after normal start of work, go home. Health and safety and all that.

(Exemptions like meat factories, fridges etc, and outdoors of course)

I guess a bad bra would be one that, in cold weather, fails to conceal - shrapnel dip (anag). :)

So if my heating fails to come on in the morning I can stay in bed (I work from home):D :D :D

No snow yet but the sky looks like snow is certainly on the agenda and will be discussed in due course.
