NFFC - Lay off Women's football, it fun, and women don't roll around on the ground forever. They just take the pain and get on with it. Kudos for that. I like to see that in the men's and also they don't bitterly complain to the referee!!! Kudos to that too. Keane should take note of that. |

to be honest i think the Fa have engineered getting 5 teams in and this sets a bad precedent.. what happens at the endof next season if a team in spain get to the final and they are fouth in their league.. they can win the final and then make themselves finish 5th in their league which doesn't finish till after the final and make sure they have 5 teams in the comp next season

If UEFA, and I mean IF, have any forward thinking in their single brain cell organism, they will put in a new rule that the defending champions is automatically entered as the 3rd/4th team of their league if they finish outside the top 2 or 3 or 4 of their respective league.

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
not only has this ruined the TV money for the other clubs, although that is still being worked on.. Artemia of Slovakia have now been pushed out of the comp..
i agree they should be in the comp but at the expense of Everton rather than as a fifth placed team.. the FA should have decided this like the Spanish FA did a few years ago also UEFA need to make sure that the finals are now always held after each UEFA league has finished to prevent collusion between clubs and league to get extra teams in.. mind you if Gerrard didn't dive to win a pen then they wouldn't have won anyway something no one in the press mentioned in any of the praise that was heaped on Liverpool after the win |

Liverpool also don't have country status. So they could meet another English team in qualifying or be in a group with another english team.
__________________ The team from Slovakia hasn't been pushed out as such. They only qualify for the competition if the winners are automatically qualified through their league. If the winners are outside the qualification places then the winners get the slovakian place. |

Liverpool: It's only common sense. Back in the day, when it were winners only, then the champions got in even if they didn't win the league.
When we won it in 1979 we wouldn't have been able to (successfully) defend it the year after having finished second, had this silly rule been in place. I can see why it's applicable to international comps because there it's easier to qualify and keeps the teams off meaningless friendlies- but the games are more in the league, and let's be honest, fixture congestion makes it more a squad game these days anyway. Glad to see UEFA have made some common sense decisions now. They aren't getting it easy but they're in it. And that should be a bonus for them. |

Chelsea poised to outbid United again.
It seem's united will have to take a back seat in the transfer market for a few year's to come. Unless fortune's change, united could end up being a mid table side. |

When this happened before in Spain - Real Madrid finished 5th but won the European Cup - the spanish FA excluded the fouth placed team, I think it was Real Zaragotha, and included Madrid in their four representatives. UEFA leave it to the countries FA to decided what teams are nominated - the Spanish FA made a decision, the English FA didn't have the balls to make one. |

When they only let league champions in then the holders got in anyway, all I'm saying is if this stupid rule about holders not being allowed in had been around then, countless champions who didn't win their league the season they won the EC wouldn't be allowed to defend it. The problem is the silly rule about the coefficients. Normally it works well but when you have a situation like this, you can't NOT send a side who have qualified by virtue of a position in the league, and you can't NOT enter the holders. If the rule had been "one team per FA" back then, do you send the holders or the Champions? The matter is there should be a special entry place for the holders and that should be independent of their league position- ie, the only logical way is for five English sides to enter, the normal 4 (Chelsea, Arsenal, **** and Everton) who finished there by rights of their league position, and the holders, who won the competition but finished outside the top 4. They all deserve to be there, as they've satisfied the requirements to be there. I also think Man City should take the extra European place too. |
Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
when I have some more time i'll go through the stats and find out where the previous winners finished in their league from 55 to today..
still think if UEFA didn't ruin the comp with that stupid leage thing then a side who could only manage afifth placed finish would have been able to win the comp anyway.. and if Gerrard never dived for a pen then they wouldn't have won it either the whole league thing is just designed to give the clubs extra games which equals extra tv money and gate receipts and is geared to mean the top clubs from Italy, Spain, UK, Germany get through.. in the event that this doesn't happen they will get third and then go into the UEFA Cup.. it should just be winners of the league and the holders and have done with it |

Bring back the CWC, winners of the cups can go in that (LDV Vans as well, pretty please ;)), 2nd-5th can go in UEFA cup... get rid of the league ******** and return it to knockout, totally unseeded, etc etc. When we won our first we were drawn against (holders) Liverpool in the first round - a tie pitting the top 2 in England together - and no-one even gave us a chance. |

Champions League should just be the champions of each league and the current holders hence the name. The changes they made only served to make the top clubs richer and to downgrade the uefa cup, it is also a mockery that when a team gets booted out of the champions league they then enter the uefa cup at a late stage, how would people feel if here when someone is knocked out of the fa cup semi final they then go into the league cup semi final, I dont think they would be too happy.

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season
the problem with the ECC is that UEFA bowed down to the G14 clubs and went for the league format so they could get more games.. then they gave into the G14 again and then openned this up to even more clubs in 98 and beyond.. the clubs didn't care won bit about history or the prestiege of the comp now that they were ruinning it for the fans they just wanted more money.. UEFA are meant to be there to protect the game from this and they failed when they created the Champion's League
The other problem is that now the ECC and the UEFA Cup are pretty much going to be one by a club from the big four \ G14 of Italy, Spain, Germany and UK.. there is no chance of a Eastern European club getting to a final and winning anything and that's the way the G14 want it.. although there have been one or two exceptions, CSKA Moskva this year in the UEFA Cup. Just look at this year when David Gill of Man U said after we got knocked out that we shouldn't have played AC Milan because they were a better side than us.. we could have played someone not as good so we could get to the next round |

Chelsea havent really been doing the same kind of team changes as long as man united they started doing it when the russian tycoon moved in.
Last few years alone have seen these strikeforce changes at man united all multi million pound buys. Rooney Smith Saha Van Nistelroy Attacking player but not out and out striker Ronaldinho I heard romours that saha is on his way out which would make sense if owen is coming, seems fergie just cant make his mind up, compare the turnover of players to arsenal. I support neither club by the way. |

Another bonus is that the **** tabloid journos will have to find another story to fill the papers up with for the next six weeks. There are dozens of players who are not listed but cost 7 figures, Man Utd have had the luxury of spending millions on a player who they dont play all season, leaving them with a large squad and of course large wage bill, this is a luxury that other teams have not been able to match eg. having a diff team for each competition. Keeping his premiership side fit for league games. Of course everyone who isnt a man utd fan knows this, but the spoilt glory hunting man utd fans either refuse to believe it or just dont realise it, they see a potential 25m annual cap as low when its still higher then 80% of the premiership. |
