Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

It may have been asked already, so apologies if it has!

Has anyone received a automatic 'upgrade' without asking NTL CS by phone or using the upgrade thing on their website?

Ive a few mates who work in NTL swansea and theyre saying that the upgrade has to be sent to you and its not automatic? Supposdly trying to keep numbers down! :erm:

Hi all,
Just had my STB upgraded to 2mb through CS,(Blackburn) big thanks to all the positive comments in this thread about how to achieve this.
I,ve been with NTL for years, and have always enjoyed a great service.

I have the 2mb (37.99 per month) internet connect broadband through a NTL Home 200 stand alone modem and live in Bury (ex C&W area) Lancashire.

What exactly do I need to do to upgrade to the 3mb connection?

I've tried rebooting my cable modem to no avail.

I'm sorry for asking but there are too many threads and conflicting answers about upgrading speeds and I thought you might be able to help me.

Many thanks

Bubby;)

Response to which competitors speed increases? Most of the ones for more than 2Mb are six months away, if the trials work and if you live in the right place. Let's face it, no other ISP in the country can give more than 2Mb to as many customers as NTL can. When will some customers wake up to the fact that they are getting a damn good deal from NTL.

Technically YOU don't have to phone anybody for it. It would have been given to you at some point this month. It's just so happen that if you want it more immediately, it's better to do it online or phone them. Most people may be happy to wait patiently for these things. :)

Erm you don't 'HAVE' to phone, if it's really that much trouble could just wait for it to be done automatically, which for most places is a very short time away.

If your area is ready to roll out the upgrades you will either need to ring CS and ask if they can do it while you wait or go to
http://www.ntlworld.com/data-feeds/e...cablemodem.php
and put your original account/ user name and original password in to get the upgrade to go through.

Check out Pipex, Telewest or even god forbid AOL. All 3 have no caps and they can do 2Mb or above for relatively the same price.

I canââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t help but agree with †˜fatlip 180ââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢. This †˜free upgradeââ‚à ‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ has been in the pipeline for a while. NTL could have contacted people with Pace boxes and offered them an exchange prior to the upgrade going ahead. This would have limited the frustration of people like myself having to wait for a new Samsung box, which is not going to be earlier than the 4th April. Secondly, if itââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s to be rolled out over the coming weeks then we should have been contacted via email to give us an indication of the time span. As for this being a free upgrade, itââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s not, there are plenty other providers providing most of these speeds and NTL have to compete or loose customers. The problem with NTL management is they donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t know how to pre-plan.

Since it's an upgrade to the customers tier of service without an increase in cost then how is it not a Free upgrade?

Did mine over the phone earlier this evening. Looks like the system is rather busy at the moment with people phoning in for the same thing. But when I did manage to get through it was all done in about 5 minutes. If only NTL had more staff like the CS representative I went through to tonight.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

Wasn't the original date going to be next week sometime? Maybe NTL should of held off on the web page upgrade/CS upgrades till then and allowed the automatic roll out to take its course. NTL could of handled this a little better but that's not to say a few forum members here couldn't handle themselves better too.
If you read back through old speed upgrade threads it's mentioned numerous times about the STB rollout being slower and if you have a SACM then the procedure for getting CS to put the upgrade through has already been mentioned a lot also, ok it's not 100% perfect but given a few calls talking to different CS staff you should get the upgrade, that seems to be the experience of many members here and my experience too. Read a bit more and shout a bit less. Hell we could be facing hard caps come the end of the year so save your breath for that.

Feel free to read parts 1-4 of this thread as I believe that a few people have seen their upgrades go through automatically. When the auto-upgrades occur will depend on your geographical location I think.

Think it was the option for package changes or queries? Option 2 or 3 I think ;) STB's are being done but someone on the thread was told they would not be done till next week but then different people are saying different things at the moment lol ;)

EDIT: BTW im not having a go

It *is* a free upgrade, and ntl don't claim to be the cheapest service.

This country has an odd obsession with cheapness. Cheap is rarely best.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 4)

I did the upgrade via the website and although adslguide reports the speed updates:

Downstream 2868 Kbps (358.5 KB/sec) 3097 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 284 Kbps (35.5 KB/sec) 306 Kbps (inc. overheads)

I still get webpages loading at the same speed and my download speed stays no more than 180..... :|

just spoke to an indian guy on Tech Support he tells me it will take up to 2 weeks to get things on track, at the moment my speed is actually running below what it was on 1.5mbit, i tried explaining that to him but he kept saying "wait a couple of weeks and it will all be fast as advertised" - what doesnt understand is my speeds are now BELOW what I had before! :(

What problem do you have with commercial private companies trying to keep customers?

Nobody's said it's a gift, but it IS a free upgrade which has been done to maintain competitive edge.

As I've said (yawn) 1000 times before, if you were a window cleaner and could get away with charging £5 per house, you wouldn't decide to charge £3 to be nice to your customers, you would only do so if there was business justification for doing so. It's exactly the same for ntl, and anyone who thinks companies should be giving stuff away out of the goodness of their heart should go and live in Russia.

Wonder if anyone is having issues with USB connections not being able to handle the faster download speeds. I know USB 1.1 (low speed) max is 1.5mb/s and I also remember a friend using a really old PC with USB having issues with download speeds getting capped due to CPU usage, cured with ethernet, this was with the 600k/s service. Perhaps people may start to experience issues here especially on the 3mb/s service.

Yes, you could say itââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s †˜freeâÃà ‚¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã¢â€ž ¢, as thereââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s no cost (but remember originally there was going to be charge). But the reason itââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s happening is that they know if they donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t keep up with other providers, theyââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ll lose customers. No oneââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s saying that there not happy getting the extra speeds, but itââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s how the whole situation has been handled.
An analogy. If you where to pay for a gallon of petrol and only got half a gallon, while the person next to you received a gallon for the same cost, would you be happy. Especially as your told, †˜you may get a full gallon in the futureââ‚Ã⠀šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢

Yep it will occur automatically, when is another matter ;) You could ring the 0800 052 2000 and select option 5 (I think, should be something about package changes or upgrades) and ask the lovely person on the phone if they can look into doing the free upgrade for you, if they can it will take a few minutes to come through to your modem and then it should be ok. Depending on where you are in the country it may be that they say you have to wait till tomorrow for it to happen automatically though :(

Never said there was, i actually encourage them to do this. I just don't think users should be so taken in by it as if your getting something for free in the way most people have taken it. You're getting a speed increase to compete with other broadband suppliers they aren't giving people speed increases from the kindness of their hearts they're doing it for a purpose so people shouldn't be so blindly greatful as some seem to be.

Just booked my 750 to be upgraded on a STB - earliest appointment is Tuesday April 5th - Seems STB users will just have to be patient for a month..... (Thats the Wirral anyways) (taps fingers repeatedly....)

Just upgraded from 750k > 2meg by phoning 0800 052 2000 option 5. I spoke to a nice guy who said it wouldn't be a problem.

However after 20 minutes and numerous manual cable modem reboots I'm still stuck on 750k.

Does anyone know if it should happen immediately or is there an hour or so delay ?

Hi guys, I got a new Samsung box fitted today (shineeeeeeey) and phoned NTL as soon as I got home and was able (0800 052 2000 - Option 5) spoke to a very nice lady who said that it should be working straight after a reboot of the box and PC, I have a router so take PC to mean router. After a reboot of the box and router, exactly nothing, no net connection whatsoever.

Went to have dinner, and rebooted everything a few times after dinner. Phoned NTL CS back up and was only in the queue for about 5 minutes, i spoke to a nice man who said everything had been done properly at their end and i'd have to phone TS on their 0845 number, i did so, followed the options and spoke to someone within 10 minutes, it was eventually worked out that they'd sent the box a hit and then deleted the file from the box rather than the other way around leaving us with no way to connect to the internet, he sent a new hit to the box and sure enough it worked first time, after a reboot of everything (again) and a provision and another reboot later, im now downloading at 240Kb/s so all's well that ends well i guess :D

I suppose like a lot of you I have been waiting for the NTL speed upgrade to happen. This was due to take place on 08/03/05. I thought I would receive something from NTL regarding this or there would be something on their website but I have been checking and so far nothing. Tonight I went to ntlworld.com and into the section 'Upgrade my Broadband speed' and clicked on it. It took me to a page of my account that said - "You are currently on 750k. You can upgrade to 2Mb for no extra charge". I took that option, the modem rebooted and I am now on an obviously faster connection. It would therefore seem the upgrade will not happen automatically  and you have to go in and do it manually. Hope this is of help to some of you or maybe you guys already knew?

No company can roll out upgrades across an entire network in one fell swoop.

All customers have been advised they will get their increase in speed within the next few weeks.

If that isn't good enough, there's always ADSL.

The upgrade will happen automatically, but it was always stated FROM MARCH 8TH, not ON MARCH 8TH.

Customers will be automatically upgraded in due course, but those who wish to get it faster can in most cases do so using one of several means.

I was one of the early takers who had a choice of paying £24.99 a month or buying my own CM for £150 and paying £20 a month for the original 512k service. I went to the upgrade page and typed in my username/password and the page came up with

"you are currently paying £24.99. ...."

"Upgrade to 2Mb........ÂÂƚ£24.99"

Does anyone know what will happen to my £5 discount if I continue with the upgrade?

Having Upgraded via CS and waiting 2 hours for the upgrade which never happened I gave up waiting and did it via that webpage link in the end.

10 minutes later modem reboots by itself and I now have 2 meg.

I'm just praying it doesn't mess up my £19.99 I've always payed as like Paddy1 I too bought the modem for £150 years ago in return for a £5 discount.

Unlike Paddy1 though no price was quoted on the website during my upgrade all I had was the letters N/A for where the price should have been. I took a few screen grabs of this to cover myself incase billing screws up!

After all if they increase my price as well as my speed it wouldn't be a FREE upgrade would it ?

Is that through the Cable Modem guys?

From the wording that i've read, it suggests that some areas may need to be upgraded. I'd assume this would mean the UBRs and the DHCPs. If thats the case they may need to ensure they can take the upgraded speed in those areas before they can allow customers to upgrade.

This is what the associates will have been told to tell customers

Some people don't seem to relise just how big of a task this actually is. There are thousands (sorry millions accourding to ntl) of customers who are going to get this upgrade. DO you really think tehy would risk the network by putting everyone on at the same time? If something goes wrong it would be chaos. We already have people calling in to get the speed inscreased because "it's the 8th and im still on xxx speed" No official word was given prio to the upgrades for good reason.

Give it time mate, it will come sooner rather than later. Like other people have suggested in here, give CS a call and _kindly_ request it. I mean come on, it's only one day. Before you even knew about the speed increases you were probably more than happy with what you have. Now you hear some customer are getting higher you want want want.

I had somebody call earlier who wanted to know why he was only getting a 2mb connection when it was upgraded to 3mb.

Took him to a couple of download sites and he was getting a quicker speed than the average 3mb connection should be getting.

He still didnt believe me though! :D they never do when that happens!

I had problems upgrading via the website as it kept on saying it couldnt detect the MAC address. Rang up CS who tried to put it through and didnt work. Was then told to phone SACM console support (that right?) and they said they couldnt do it and it was not recommended to do so as the modem would most likely go into pre-reg mode meaning no connection as NTL are having numerous upgrade problems!!

Anyway, decided to move my computer to where the modem is, and try the website without going through the wireless router, i.e. direct via ethernet.

Worked a treat, and within 2mins was up and running on 2mb.

Sorted. :D

A few reasons as to why you may get this error.

1.you have a ps2 or xbox package.
2.you have a broadband plus package.
3.you have recently upgraded or downgraded your account.
4.your using a set top box.

If you have 1 of the above and are getting the error messge you will need to call cs to get your speed upgraded.
