couldnt tell you if they act on it though

Re: Green box doors left open
Thanks Pillhead.
Last night I reported a grey steel street cab that had it's top missing and the door removed, although internals did not appear to have been vandalized. I'll report back here if/when they do anything about. |

I have just telephoned to report it again, allegedly they will be out to sort it within 24hours!!! |

Am I surprised? No! Disappointed? Yes! If this street cab survives the weekend without having it's innards destroyed by the Saturday revellers returning from a night on the town I shall be very surprised. |

The cabinet is still minus it's top, various actions have taken place, e.g. a polythene cover was taped over it only to be vandalized within days, the door has been stuck back with sticky tape several times and that is the current situation with the door having been taped on a couple days ago but with the top open to the elements. I gave up trying to report it as VM seemed full of good intentions but no positive action. This is the next cab down the road from the one that supplies my broadband, I am informed that because it is fibre to the cabs that damage to this cab will not affect my service, however it is strange that the only downtime and outages I get seem to coincide with periods of wet weather? Maybe coincidence, maybe not!!! |
Re: Green box doors left open
Virgin have just replaced a box a few streets from me. I think I'll take a photo of it and frame it. The old one lost its door 2 years ago and its been sitting with a board saying "Virgin. We apologise for the inconvenience while we are improving our network" propped up against it ever since. Now perhaps they'll start on the other 20 odd damaged or open boxes in the area. I think not :D

Re: Green box doors left open
well ive sent them a polite message saying that i have many kids playing in the area and if they dont do something about it. As its obviously dangerous, i shall report it to my local mp.
For that dont know there is a live mains supply to them boxes that could easily be touched by young children when the front is off |

Re: Green box doors left open
both of the ones near me have mains supply as a billow of smoke came out of one once and took down everything when there was a power surge.

Re: Green box doors left open
Tried to get through to Virginmedia to help them out and report an open box and they didnt understand so can someone please chase this up for me.
There is a fully open green box on Tennis Court Drive, Leicester near the junction with Greenland Drive. I noticed it whilst passing this morning. Thanks. |

I reported one at the end of my road twice in Sept 09, the put plastic sheeting over it several times, it took over a year to be properly sorted! |

Re: Green box doors left open
Just ring the council and report it to them as its a dangerous street hazard.
They then get in touch with virgin and give them a time that i HAS to be done by |

Ive contacted a forum member about green boxes being open, spiderpalnt and broadbandking are 2 users ive contacted in the past, not quite sure why i didnt use the online form though

Re: Green box doors left open
Sorry if this seems very very stupid but is there no way virgin could put the cabinets under ground? obv not without access but just so they are not easily access-able to any one? may seem stupid but only asking.

Re: Green box doors left open
I reported one on my friends road, he has been having trouble with internet for so long, this could possibly be the reason, people fiddling with them. hopefully they do something about it.

The problem isn't having kit in cabinets, its the maintenance and quality of the cabinet shells. Remember a lot of these cabinets will now be 15-20 years old in some areas, no wonder they are looking a bit neglected! ;) |

I understand there is a project to modernise new cabinets and tidy up the ones that in greatest need of a bit of TLC but I dont know any more than that. |
Re: Green box doors left open
Hmmm... BT have installed a VERY "Heavy Duty" phone cabinet
in Whalebone Lane North, (Dagenham area), just recently ... (One MASSIVE Lock), with ventilation slots all round the bottom ... so it CAN (presumably) be done, and far more "vandal proof" than the TWO "comparitively-flimsy" Virgin cabinets I've seen "vandalised open" recently ... all within a five mile walk Dagenham-Chadwell Heath area :( |

Its much harder to upgrade an existing cabinet than it is to build a brand new one, I would expect any future change to existing street furniture to be for superior build types than are currently deployed. |
Re: Green box doors left open
There are many cabinets left open around my town, some have had doors missing for ages. i decided to take note of the cabs with sca or scb numbers that were unsecured. I found 16 riding around in a short period of time, and have since located many more. its not just a problem of them being open but often cables were hanging out.
I reported them via http://allyours.virginmedia.com/forms/cabinet.html. The reply i recieved shocked me. They have no database of there own cabinet locations by cabinet numbers. Why on earth did they bother labelling them?. They expected me to give detailed road names and positions of cabs. Needless to say i said they could put me on there payroll for such information. what a useless affair. |
Re: Green box doors left open
We do have a database of network equipment and street furniture. The problem may be that the references on older cabinets may not be correct as during mergers and acquisitions some network furniture was renamed. Also, errors on any cabinet ID's wont reflect the true reference. This is an issue being looked at across the country with the cabinet cleanup VM have underway.
Address details help the team locate the correct cabinet as in certain areas you can have many cabinets within a small geographical area. |
Re: Green box doors left open
Are the cabs that difficult to close in the first place? most of the ones i found open did not even look damaged.
one cab even had a key still in it!. |
Re: Green box doors left open
No they aren't but some older cabinets are not up to standard these days and are either easy to open (by people other than VM staff) or are faulty/damaged and don't close properly.
Again these type of issues are being rectified over time. There is something in the region of 500k cabinets around the UK so it will be quite a job! Don't let this put you off reporting cabinet damage or open doors, the more the better! |
