ntl news server - broken

I've found at least one newsgroup isn't refreshing properly. New to these forums I can't tell if this is a known problem.

I've raised this twice with ntl who have said they've escalated it - and that it would be fixed within 24 hours. No surprise given their track record that it hasn't been fixed.

I'm using Outlook express and news.cable.ntlworld.com. I know the group in question (rec.sport.cricket) is busy, but according to my client, there hasn't been a post since February 2005. There have been thousands since then if I use another ISP or groups.google.com.

Presumably there's nothing I can do at my end. Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this?

try to log on to news.virgin.net and search for your newsgroup there

Same server array, won't make any difference.

I wish people at ntl would not give fix times
How did that ntl person know it would take 24 hours

Blag to get rid on customer, wishful thinking or ill informed of procedures and escalation path to get this kind of fault fixed. Who knows

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

:redcard: well its looking like the servers not updating new items again, back like it was in March, hopefully it wont take weeks to sort this error out again.

I know it looks like I'm new here, but Ive followed the site for ages just never joined,so heya all great site better late than never I guess,I've really loved ntl for the 4+ years ive been with 'em,but now with the caps the newserver being unreliable and my kids growing out of watching cable kids channels I'm thinking of ditching NTL for good.Anyone know a uk isp that offers a good free newserver ?

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

Well i know of people who have used clara.net and eclipse.net which have them...i cant vouch for how good their groups are, but the prices are ridiculous.

You might aswell get a dedicated news provider, that + cable would be much more cost effective...i can recommend http://www.newsgroupdirect.com/. Full speeds on 3mb.

http://www.newshosting.com/ is very good and for their unlimited service it will cost £8 a month.

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

funny enough, when i went from BT dialup, to ntl I was amazed how many more groups were available, the ntl newsgroups are flakey, sometimes, but when they work they are pretty good ;)

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

Cheers guys for your responses.Yay servers seems to be updating OK again, must have had a 24hr shut down for some reason

For most part I'm very happy with ntl (for the guys who use its whole package including its newserver & webspace you can't complain for its good price) so untill the dreaded cap's kick in,I'm sure I'll stick around.Did check a few isp's websites out yesterday so many which seemed good I couldnt get in my area Bulldog seemed to be about the best including free uk landline calls but a guy on irc told me its very unstable connection wise, something Ive never had a problem with ntl apart from the odd shut down due to local road works.

NTL Newsgroup imminent changes

According to the Service Status, NTL are going to be revamping their Newsgroup support soon. Anyone have any idea what this is going to entail? I'd hate to see another cull of the binaries. I have to get my tranny pr0n from somewhere ;)

Cheers, Sime

Well they do say 'improved' service. Any change is better than no change, especially if more binary groups are added...like my requested ones :D Really, really doubt it but you never know.

Re: NTL Newsgroup imminent changes

Best news would be if they were to farm it out, with a reasonable quota on a good quality provider - it must work for the ISPs that have done it, and it saves them maintaining a service for a minority of customers, while still being able to say it comes with newsgroup support!

I'd guess that the average P2P noob today wouldn't know a news server if it jumped up and bit them, while many know nothing beyond web and email - and don't want to.

the software doesn't help - Internet Explorer can't natively understand yEnc, while Thunderbird doesn't do 'combine & decode' without external help ( but does understand some yEnc) - not NTL's fault, of course - i have to say their servers are very fast, but retention & completion often leave a lot to be desired for the larger groups. I wait to see what 'improvements', we get :)

Might I suggest switching to newshosting. Just as good as giganews and £6 a month cheaper. Unless you need the 50 day retention I would give newshosting a try.

You may want to check out if the speeds satisfy you on nhs first before dumping giganews..

I must agree with you homealone that ntl's speed is superb, I wonder how fast it can actually go, but in my experience whilst the retention is awful, I downloaded a large 14 day old post fine the other day, so its quite random too. I find completion greaat though, if the group is carried, the articles will be there..for a short while.

In which case sign up to http://www.guba.com (which stands for Gigantic Usenet Binary Archive)

It costs $10 a month (less than six quid at current exchange rates) and archives all sorts of binary groups as well as text ones.

Yeah, currently. Heard people with issues with nhs, and especially those > 6mbit, don't get me wrong though I do think they are in top league of providers.

I pay Ntl for broadband internet services which are supposed to include Usenet access.

If Ntl want to deduct the $14.99 from my bill then fine!

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

i think that ntl binary newsgroups are quite good and the retention is good as well and the files that are there are basically always complete, the only problem are some major groups have been deleted by them  ...

The two servers i use are news.cable.ntlworld.com and news.ntli.net (this one has lots of different server names) Both as far as i know are different because when i ping them different ip addresses come up but would just like to ask are they both different???

Also how many connections does ntl allow to there newsgroup server because as far i know the more connections the more stable/faster the downloading speed although obviously i cant go above my 2mb line speed???

Also they should really have more information about newsgroups on there website such as the servers and connections and stuff like that.

Newsgroups - bandwidth - caps

I've just recently signed up with GigaNews, having got fed up trying the ntl newsgroups and hearing about experiences of other people i know, getting the best out of newsgroups.

I downloaded like crazy for the first few days, then pulled back a bit, and haven't really downloaded much the past few days, as i don't want ntl cutting me off.

Any other people use newsgroups? Any heavy users? What kind of useage are you getting through a month, and have you ever had any letters/warnings off ntl?

I know there's no official cap at the moment, so it's all a bit up in the air at the moment, but i'd like to find out other peoples experiences, and see if i can come to some sort of balance, on what to download per day/week/month, and not have to worry about incurring the wrath of ntl.

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

There is an official usage policy at the moment but it isn't being enforced. I would expect that to change in the very near future in light of todays announcement.

Ive seen off over 40 gig a month off giganews through ntl plus other browsing and downloading so prob about 55-60 no letters no problem.I would not advise this as Ntl will be changing there policy so I wouldnt hit it to hard.Try doing it overnight so your not effecting anyone else.Im sure you can find all the linux distros you can handle. Now though im with ukonline 500 gig cap and I see off over 220 gig a month now

Yeah i only use them overnight, my area seems quite short of broadband users, and i've never had problems with speeds etc, so i don't think that would ever cause a problem. I was using more than 60GB without newsgroups. :Yikes:

If i could get UKonline at a decent speed in my area, i'd sign up ASAP! Just for the peace of mind, but for the moment ntl is my best option. Hopefully the new caps that come in with 10mb will be a bit more generous!

I wouldn't worry about it until someone contacts you. I have been downloading from the newsgroups with ntl for almost 2 years now and not once has anyone contacted me about my downloading habits. I normally download between 12am & 6pm. I'm not sure what will happen when they switch to the 10mb connections but if it's anything like it is now with the soft cap, then I don't think anything will happen and I will continue using the service in the same way as I do now.

Has anyone else been experiencing really slow downloads from Newshosting over the last few days?

Since Tuesday I seem to have gone from a steady 240ish kb/sec to a unstable 50 kb/sec. I am in the Leicester area and am unsure if the problem is NTL or Newshosting :disturbd:

jtwn 10-08-2005 18:52

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

When its goes dodgy, download from somewhere you can max out or robin walker speedtest your connection and see what it says - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...speedtest.html.

If thats fine then do a traceroute to newshosting and see if there is any unwanted results.

daniel larusso 10-08-2005 18:56

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

Cheers, i did the speed test and everything seems ok:

Wed, 10 Aug 2005 18:53:57 UTC
1st 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 532 ms = 246376 Bytes/sec = approx 2050 kbits/sec

I also did the traceroute but am unsure what the results mean to be honest. I have just mailed there tech support and am waiting for a reply. Even the NTL servers are pwning it at the minute :td:

IanUK 10-08-2005 19:04

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

The standard Newshosting connection uses Cogent, there is currently a large problem with Cogent and NTL, I think you can use a different port with NewsHosting and route around the problem, (http://www.newshosting.com/support/info/) try 7000 or 9000 - I don't use them myself but some people have reported that works.

Hopefully the problem will be fixed soon, but its been like it for a while now to many sites :(

Re: [merged] binary newsgroups on NTL

Cheers Ian. Changing the NNTPPort to 9000 in Forte Agent has restored it back to its former glory
