Might be easy but I still wouldn't fancy that 2 year contract. Technology moves so fast I wouldn't want to be stuck anywhere.

Yup got to agree on that 1 2 years is a long time to be tied to one company especially one with NTLs reputation. Having said that for the whole my internet connection has been pretty good in all the years i have been with NTL

Hans Gruber 24-01-2005 23:30

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

Also ADSL2+ should be out some time later this year with some nice speed increases, wouldn't want to have to miss out on that :)

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

I know of other isp's that happily let residental users use their business packages, if NTL were to block us from doing this then they really have got to the bottom of the pit. As doofy said you dont require a vat number to be a business, and I think ntl will happily accept orders after all its a 2 year lock in and a nice £90 signup fee which beats the free setup on residental. If only the ntl: home team had as much sense, they obviously throwing silly money away on these free installs.

(Okay, so they say they slow down if it's over 10gig a month, but still...)

the speed is variable - when it's a peak time I wouldnt be surprised if it's 128 down as well as up!

The last time NTL brought up capping and i complained to them, they told me then if iwas such a heavy user they would happily put me on to there business pack. As per usual money comes into it and they might as well collect the revenue, that along with the 2 year contract and compulsory direct debit, much better than having your customers leave.

mrlipring 25-01-2005 12:22

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

Ok, i've just been on the phone to NTL's business sales, and i've been told that i can upgrade from a residential package to a business package as long as i give them a month's notice. I'll phone residential sales in a second, to double check, but i also asked the business saleswoman about the speed increases. She says there are no speed increases scheduled for business customers. I'm assuming that's incorrect... I know that communication between departments can be terrible (used to work for scottish power...), and that often the PR and marketing bods often know about this kinda stuff before it hits the grunts on the phones, but can anyone confirm whether the speed upgrades will be across the board?

Doofy 25-01-2005 12:54

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

I was told yesterday that the speed increases would be across the board, but am looking for confirmation one way or the other have just emailed the business team. According to NTL CS yesterday when i tried to get my service disconnected completely they told me there were no speed increases planned for NTL Period. Just goes to show that one department doesnt communicate with the others, no change there then. Soon as i hear from the NTL business team i will let you know what they say.

Ig - if you go back 2 or 3 pages, there was discussion of static IPs, and a request for your comment.

I think I know the reason why it won't work, but would be interested to know how the business tariff solves that...

Ignition 25-01-2005 14:04

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

2 ways to do static IP on cable, 1 is semi-static the other 'truly' static that I can think of anyway!

First way semi-static is to do fixed entry in the DHCP dbase and treat this IP as reserved for x customer and only usable from that cable modem. Downside is that certain things can break this IP and it no longer routes properly.

The truly static way is to use PPPoE so that an IP is taken from a central pool rather than local DHCP servers. Think this is the way that Telewest are doing it going by the way their static IPs route.

No idea how ntl are doing it, may be doing it a completely different way, I'm not an expert on these things

(Okay, so they say they slow down if it's over 10gig a month, but still...)

The small print:
Things you should know
  1. Speeds are presented in a downstream/upstream format. eg uncapped/128 means best available speed for downloads and up to 128 kbps for uploads. These speeds are the theoretical maximum speed achievable on a plan at any given time and are not guaranteed (i.e. customers may not achieve speeds of up to 128kbps). Speeds may vary from time to time depending on plan selected, Internet traffic, site server capacity and other factors.
  2. Minimum package cost on a 12 month Unlimited* Cable plan is $978.40 (includes installation). Early termination fees may apply.
  3. Monthly Usage means your total data transfers (metered downloads and uploads) for each calendar month. 1 Gigabyte (GB) is 1,000 Megabytes (MB). Unused Monthly Usage forfeited.
  4. Our additional user charges are $1.00 per user per month.
  5. You may qualify for a Reward Options package. To find out more visit our Reward Options site.
That's what, 450 quid or so? I'd want way more than 10 Gigs for that - and how fast is 'best available'? Looks crap to me :erm:

ProfPete 25-01-2005 18:02

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

Aussie $ is 2.5/£

I presume that's per year. So that works out at around £32.50 per month.

And best available on DOCSIS, that's around 25mbps mark...

JohnHorb 25-01-2005 18:16

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

If you browse the site, the best speed available is 1.5MB down/128 KB up - sound familiar?

Ignition 25-01-2005 20:29

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

Looking at the forums people on this package tend to hit about 10Mbps, suspect that the modems are 10-baseTX so that's maxing the ethernet port out.

EDIT: At least one cable provider in Australia also has a period overnight where they don't meter. at this time I'd imagine speeds are significantly slower, more info is on the web, Google is your friend, I just cba to search for it at the mo.

Anyone know any updates on the speed upgrades:

300k to 1mb
750k to 2mb
1mb to 3mb

I havent heard much news about it recently and if I was to phone up NTL right now and offer to pay the £25 admin charge, would they do it or has it not taken off as yet ?

speaking to my m8 who works for NTL, after their meeting with bigwigs, there is NO hard enforced cap and all 1.5meg customers will get upgraded automatically to 3meg with no charge!

No doubt there will be the non belivers here, but he has been right in the past.

2) has forgotten about the NDA he will have signed if he actually has hold of this information- in which case i would tell him not to blab too much because if he does he can be fired for gross misconduct ;)

For what its worth I have been told by someone well placed at ntl that the upgrades will actually start in the 3rd week in Feb, and if the first area happens without glitch then customers and the rest of the ntl staff will be told, and the rest of the upgrade will happen in March :)

The speeds were scheduled to launch in Q1 2005 so that more or less means in the coming weeks.... They have not told you anything new from what we already know. ;)

The thing about 1.5Mbps customers not having to pay the admin fee makes sense - they won't need a new modem. Perhaps it will only apply to customers with the old STB modems? That'd be nice...then I won't have to pay it *grins at Samsung STB*

I'm not sure about the cap. I think it'd be foolish for them to hard-enforce it, I have to say.

Later in the year the top tier price will reduce a few quid, hard caps will also be introduced with excess bandwidth charged at £1.99 per Gig thus undercutting the BT excess bandwidth charge by 1p.
Either that or we will all be moved to TeleWest charges and conditions.
Whatever happens 99.9% of users will be happy with the outcome, just you see.... ;)

So from what I understand, there's a £25 charge to 'upgrade' because of the change of old box to new box. If I complain that my current box is faulty, or at least the f'ing software regarding the sound is, would they charge me to change that to a newer box? If I mention that I'm going to be on the 2MB service would they just put a newer box in to save the hassle of coming out yet again? Would I still be charged for an 'upgrade'?

Oh just pay the £25 because you aren't going to get the upgrade otherwise. ;)

Well if they come to do a boxswap they are going to see if the original is faulty surely..and anyway that would be just trying to swindle the system.

I guess you could upgrade for a month and see. If i am understanding this right, people with SACMs will have to pay the fee aswell?

Seems cheap to me considering you get upgraded for a flat £25 and the monthly cost remains where it is at present. You could have been just asked to pay more each month instead!! :erm:

Look at it like this. NTL have spent tens of millions upgrading the network to give everyone one upgrade for free. Maybe they are under pressure to get some of that money back?

I am not sure if a £25 one off fee is a rip off. If they were charging £25 extra a month, it would be.

It is. It's not really fair to compare Sweden's broadband network with ours, as ours has been largely privately funded, and the Swedish government spent billions of pounds installing a broadband network for swedish ISPs to use. If our government had done the same, I suspect we would have broadband at the same speed.

What about all the 'person hours' needed to check that everything will work when the roll-out occurs, not forgetting all those who will need a new STB (if you get your BB thru an STB that is) who want to go over 1M download.

If you pay for your service then by all means (if the normal channels of communication do not appear to be working) have a moan, maybe a helpful associate will pop in and help you sort your problem out.

But then again it's the usual crop of whingers and whiners who want it all for free.

The answer is quite simple if you don't like what's on offer then feel free to 'shop around' and change to another ISP. According to what is posted in this board (mostly in the 'I'm going to XXXX ISP if NTL don't give me yyyy posts) alone there are plenty around who will give you what you need.

BTW don't let the door smack you on the backside on the way out

We pay ntl for the service if they want to upgrade it they should upgrade it for everybody whos equipment can handle the new speeds

i can understand a admin fee if you need new kit as then a techie has to test it deliver it .etc but an admin fee to upgrade the speeds that new customers will be getting anyway...

im not even overly worried about the cap...

Err "whingers" have a right to express their views, whether you agree with them or not. Take the death penalty for example, yes it only affects people that comit serious crimes, but it doesn't mean everyone would want to live in a country where it's an option. We also live in a country where everyone has a right to an opinion.

Get real dudes! If NTL announced you could pay a one off £25 to jump from 300k< 1mb, 750< 2mb or 1.5mb< 3mb before you knew about the speed 'upgrades' you would have been queuing to pay.......

Ok then, let's say my box IS faulty.. I mean, according to one of the regular smart asres on here the samsung box cures all the sound issues on the bromley network.

So.

Guy comes round, fits said box.

Why/what would i have to pay £25 for?
And once I have a new box what's to stop me cancelling my BB and then starting it up again, as a new customer, for free?
Why are current customers treated worse for 'loyalty'?

There are ways to circumstent the charge, you could threaten to cancel and pot luck depending who you talking to they will waive the charge and possibly give you a discount or they might call your bluff, then if you carried out your threat you could resignup but would have the aggro of having some downtime.

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

Well this NTL guy I talked to didnt seem to know anything about the £25 charge and said we'd be automatically upgraded and it would be like "go to bed on 300k, and wake up to 1mb".
I guess time wil tell.

Most businesses do charge for transferring and although it probably doesnt cost them anywhere near that amount to do an upgrade, they need to put the money elswhere in the network so its a way of making money isnt it. But as its only a one off fee, then why not.
Seems good enough for what I'l be getting.

It makes me laugh that the people who are complaining most about the imposition of caps and knocking NTL for restricting their usage are the ones that are looking for ways to reduce their contributions to NTLs coffers. If you want faster, unrestricted broadband you have to pay for it.

Just noticed something rather odd. My last post was my 1,999th making this my 2,000th but I am sure that I passed the 2,000 mark a few days ago. Odd.

What do NTL actually do for their £25?

Nemesis 29-01-2005 12:09

Re: [Merged] *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please

We have it on high authority that there will be a £25.00 one off payment.

The benefit to the customer is that they will be on a bigger download bandwidth for the same money per month.

The recent "automatic" upgrades and the proposed "£2 5" upgrades have both meant substantial changes to the Infrastructure to accomodate the new speeds. These changes cost money, and ntl have paid for this already.

Why would they offer increased speed for free ??? It's a business for christs sake. They are there to provide a service and expect to be paid for it.

£25 one off fee .... then continue paying what you were before, for a faster service, hmmm, difficult choice ;).
The choice is yours. If you don't like it, don't do it or leave. simple really.

The upload speeds may be changing too, we are waiting confirmation.

Good grief, a one off £25 fee to double your speed??
Its peanuts to most people [and no i'm not rich and i appreciate students or everyone else is'nt loaded] its not even £2 per month.
When you way up the cost if you dont like paying it, you can stay on the lower tier, its not compulsory.
I've been more than critical about the cap, that stinks, but the £25 would'nt lose me any sleep, whereas the caps caused me to change isp.

not much....

oh, apart from:
- writing new config files
- added billing details to 3 databases
- supplying every 300k or 750k customer who wants to upgrade with a new set top box
- upgrading the network where this is needed
- promotion of the new speeds

;)

I think the point Paul is making is that the Cable Forum team has access to people quite high up within NTL (people who would know, or at least know someone who would) and these people have said there will be an admin fee.

The person you spoke to may have assumed you are a new customer (logical assumption - if you have a service, why approach a salesman?). If this is the case, then they are right. There is no admin fee for new users.

Fair one on that, maybe only charge them?
- upgrading the network where this is needed
Once again, have to do it anyhooo if they wanna roll out new speeds.
- promotion of the new speeds
No more than the promotion they are already doing like sending Exsisting NTL customer adverts to get Broadband when in fact they already have it !!

Interesting point, when they get this info do they point them to the feedback made or is it 1 way traffic of information?

not always the case.
I have good friends at NTL,my wife worked there for 10 years, i've no need to ring anybody up as they are personal friends who still work in different areas of NTL.

There is no upgrade fee and no BB caps when it starts - in March

all the caps, prices and tiers have all been confirmed. look at ntl's latest presentation:
http://www.ntl.com/locales/gb/en/inv...stor-press.pdf

it shows 4 tiers of broadband
300k for £15.99
1mb (5gb cap) for £17.99
2mb (30gb cap) for £24.99
3mb (40gb cap) for £37.99

300k will be retained, as an entry level package (see page 9) and apparently there will be no cap on the 300k service.
i may simply downgrade to 300k (instead of migrating to the 1mb tier), no cap, and cheaper - yay :D

and i'm sure ntl won't mind, as i won't be downloading at 1mb, only 300k - less stress on the network
:)

Looking at that press release (page 15) it looks as though "metered broadband" will come after "BB spead increases". So will there be a while with no caps?

But why announce the caps then? I do believe that Simon Duffy talked about them..

I would like to believe you, but what you say does not tally with what Cableforum has published (and in the past, I have found the news items at Cableforum to be quite accurate), or what NTL announced to their investors. http://www.ntl.com/locales/gb/en/inv...stor-press.pdf (page 33)

Are you saying NTL have lied to their investors (an action which may well persuade said investors to pull out as if they lie about something like this, what else are they lying about)?

well we all know about the 1gig per day cap thats in place now but not strictly enforced, this will be exactly the same, its listed but not enforced.

Basically to frighten the heavy downloaders away, like what they did with the scare mongering of the 1gig cap

:)

Any guarantee or evidence to support that?
What i've read elsewhere seems to contradict this. ;)

And as soon as they find out its not enforced, they all come back, so why scare them?

Don't forget that the vast majority of NTL customers know nothing at all about the proposed new speeds and caps. They have never notified customers about them, only those visiting sites such as this will have heard of them.

I have faith in what the team report on the subject as they are usually spot on. The £25 upgrade figure is the only thing that they may have second thoughts on, but I doubt it. I am in no doubt that the caps will come and they will be enforced one way or another. We will have to wait and see how they are enforced.

Perhaps you are using ADSL and want to give the heavy users the idea that there will be no hard caps so that they won't switch to ADSL and threaten your use. ;)

NTL, and any other company, need new customers to add to the revenue coming in which pays for upkeep and expansion. Most companies give incentives to encourage new customers to sign up. When I first joined NTL I was getting DTV Family Pack, telephone and free dial-up internet for only £9.99 a month. This package cost less than I was paying for a dial-up package.

But if you lie to the investors, the investors pull out, they take their money with them. With the amount NTL is in debt, that would bankrupt the company. Regardless of the amount of profit made by the company.

Here's an alternative to NTL... http://www.ukonline.net/broadband/?doc=bb2000 . Uncapped 2mbit for £29.99 a month.

It seems not all ISPs agree that caps are essential.

alot of people dont bother switching services becuase they are happy with the service, NTL does not need to worry about people who are existing customers as most are proberbly happy and dont or hardly even complain.

compaines will only take advantage of long time payers and subscribers, notice how effective the retention technique is ?
