I can't explain this. I wasn't at home at the time. There were no power outages. Everything was normal when I arrived home.

Someone claimed that the max latency of the Ambit 300 was a bit of a side-effect and not actually representative of the modem itself.

Just swapped out the Superhub 2 for an old WNR2000 router I had lying around, Ive updated the firmware and it's working fine but interesting to see there doesnt appear to be any drop in latency or jitter.

So on the face of it no real benefit apart from the router being pretty configurable compared to the Superhub 2. The second big red spike was me swapping out the cables for cat6 ones I had spare.

Mine has been a mixed bag for the past 5 months, speed is fine for the most part though it has dropped as low as 40Mb on occasion.

Depends on your usage. If you're gaming jitter is probably worse, as it makes interactions inconsistent and jumpy in extreme cases. If you're downloading or browsing high jitter isn't much of an issue, it'll be overall faster if average latency stays lower. Unbuffered VOIP is another jitter sensitive one, particularly as your ears have much higher temporal response than your eyes.

I've never found base latency to differ much between ISPs, as there are many factors that can make latency higher than the minimum but none that can make it go below the minimum, it's just a question of how much above base each ISP stays.

I've genuinely had no issues gaming on VM. My wife had some issues with WoW a while ago but I think that was bad traffic shaping or something, it has been resolved for some time.

WoW isn't really a game that requires a fast connection. Most MMORPGs have a second or more of lag built into the system anyway.

No, I know that, but a while ago (a good year or so, probably longer) there were major issues with WoW on VM connections, where latency was shooting into figures of several hundred, sometimes > 1000.

Ah yeah, I think I remember something like that, WoW (and a few other, less well-known things) were misclassified as P2P by VM.

I posted packet captures showing the rather aggressive and unsubtle upstream shaping that was in use.

They were also shaping the Think Broadband non-HTTP speed test.

WoW had a patch which changed the protocol and the Allot kit didn't spot it anymore.
