As well as being for Electricity only, it turns out this is only for 6 months as well - VAT will return to 5% on April 1st 2027.

Still VAT on the high gas usage over the winter months then . . . sounds about right

Yes, which as I posted, means VAT is still applied to the larger gas bills over the winter period. I would have preferred it the other way round to save me a few quid

Britain's biggest energy supplier, Octopus, tells customers to avoid using electricity during the solar eclipse because of the hit on renewable generation.

On a very warm evening, good luck with that.
All the fans will still be on, as will aircon for those that have it.

I'm over in Spain to [hopefully] see it.

It’s a publicity stunt to show off how they’re trying to actively balance power generation, use and storage. I get it in stereo from them with an EV charging tariff, they want the car plugged in at all times when it’s at home so they can dump excess power into it, and they have some gimmick involving cartoon fish in the app that’s supposed to amount to additional off-peak charging hours if I’m a good boy.

Carth 12-08-2026 09:25

Re: UK Energy Prices

We've had quite a lot of 'cleanly produced' excess power lately, but without adequate storage a fair bit is wasted . . there again at these prices, who wants it? :D

Re: UK Energy Prices

Not sure how this gets triggered but it maybe useful for people on Octopus with a smart meter.

 turn the lights off, lock the doors, seal the windows. I'll pass Octopus. Thanks though.

My smart meter has been flashing every Sunday saying I'm over budget. Do they do this just to piss people off? My energy usage is the same as when it wasn't flashing. It's the blooming chargeable rates that have changed! :fit: talk about shot in the foot!

A whole hour free (generally on a Sunday). Wow ... :erm:

* and thats if you manage to qualify, which seems a lot of messing about in the week.

Even if I were still on Octopus, I would not bother, its a few pence.

Everyone and their dog are now throwing 'free' stuff around, much of which is going to cost you more to get than you'll save

Yes I wouldn't bother either unless it gets triggered automatically with me working shifts.

Energy prices for millions of households will rise to the highest level for three years, under regulator Ofgem's price cap.

Ofgem said the price cap will increase by 4% on 1 October, driven by higher wholesale gas prices due to the Iran war.

A household using a typical amount of gas and electricity will pay £60 a year more, but more than a third of households are on fixed tariffs so their prices will not change.

The government said its cut to VAT on electricity bills will save households £45 and it was doing more to address cost of living pressures, but opposition parties said Labour was not doing enough.

The new cap will hit household bills as the colder weather arrives in October
Our current tariff with Fuse runs out late September, so we transferred to a two year fixed rate with EDF last week.

Half way through my 2 year fixed with outfox, it looks better each time the cap rises. I wish it was for more than 2 years.

I'm fixed until March.

Don't stress it you could possibly make sayings elsewhere like with grocery shopping like I do by purchasing with vouchers.

What does 6 becomes 7 mean?

How long would that currently last you?

That would be 2.5 months for me which includes an overpayment ready for when the heating goes on sometime in October.

No idea I don't track it because it's depressing knowing the fact handouts have my bills high but that's another political story!

I just load my account up so nobody knocks my door, or call for that matter. I put £500 on in April which has seen me through until today where I've added £250.

I base it on my monthly direct debit which is currently £96 a month but I dont work from home so I imagine it would be alot more for people who do. I guess that'll rise another 20-30% when the heating is needed during the day when I'm home.

Re: UK Energy Prices

Mine is set by outfox at £175.
Its clearly too high as they have refunded me twice this year (when asked).
They seem reluctant to lower it though.

I miss the ability to easily change my direct debit amount like I could in Octopus, via the app or webpage.

I'm currently £178.60 in credit ready for the months that I need my heating on.

Paul 29-08-2026 21:55

Re: UK Energy Prices

Its more work for them.
Their only rule is your balance must equal or exceed one months payment.
So twice in the last year I have requested refunds to remove the "excess" that had built up.
Perhaps most people dont bother.

I just told them what I wanted my DD amended to, and they did it.

Before or after you told them how grumpy you are? :o:

I generally tell them what I'm willing to pay, not what their 'estimated' amount is. During the following discussion I calmly mention I can easily move somewhere else, it 'may' mean a slightly higher payment, but it won't be a payment they get.

Up to now, a fair DD amount has been agreed between both parties.
