The channels are needed for when numerous live events all occur at a similar time , why would anyone be bothered about it I'd much prefer to see Sport in HD as opposed to behind the red button in SD. |
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
The point I was trying to make is they duplicate programs often which seems stupid to me. As for people prefering to watch in HD rather than SD behind the red button I agree with but as I refuse to pay the 7 quid extra for HD sky sports it doesn`t effect me.

Still don't get your point what harm is it doing by being there so what if something is duplicated , at least on busy nights of sport like the one you initially quoted me on it allows for everything or nearly everything shown in HD. What's the alternative remove it and when there's an overspill put the games behind the red button in SD for all those who do pay the HD fee ? That seems a little unfair. I don't see how it really impacts you. I can't see them dropping my subscription by removing it , even if it's only there for helping busy live sporting times I'm all for it staying. |

Anyway as you say it makes no difference to me whether they show the same game on 2 different channels. I also recall before sports 5 opened they sometimes put football matches on Sky 1,didn`t they? |

Re: General Sky TV Discussion
Set your TV free suggests allowing you to view recordings on mobile devices with cloud bookmarking etc but I could be wrong.

Re: General Sky TV Discussion
Maybe not a set top box but SKY Mobile and a streaming stick? TeleTV on Digital SPY posted the following earlier today:
"Ive just had an email from sky asking me to take part in a survey for their ''exciting new service which is about to be launched'' SKY mobile. Basically the questions all seemed to be about a new an improved version of sky go, Now tv a sky movies pack, sky sports pack and downloading your recordings to your phone to take with you to watch on the move, when your ready. It also states that the new mobile service comes with a ''streaming stick'' so you can send anything on your phone to your tv, including your recordings that have been sent to your phone, ''Truly setting your TV free'' Everything thats in speech marks are what has been quoted during the survey. Almost all of it, was would i use my mobile for these services, would that excite me watching sky one on the move, the latest films on the move yada yada yada. the ''streaming stick'' can be plugged into almost any tv, meaning i can watch what i want when i want without the need for a sky box to be plugged into that TV, The last part of the survey were so basic questions, Do you think you will keep your sky TV subscription in the next 12 months? Do you think you will keep your sky broadband and phone in the next 12 months? Would you consider leaving sky for another service provider in the next 12 months?" So from what I can gather there's going to be a new and improved SKY Go style app for mobile devices. You can get a streaming stick that will plug into any compatible TV. You can then send whatever your watching on your mobile device directly to the TV via the streaming stick. Programs you have recorded on your SKY+ box can also be accessed in someway, probably by transferring the recording to a cloud, via this new mobile app and streaming stick. This would fit in with the suggestion of a Netflix like interface. If this is the big announcement next week there's going to be a lot of dissapointed people. |

Re: General Sky TV Discussion
Expect announcements from other companies in time one suspects...
|
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
This genuinely leads me to believe Sky have lost the plot. Their biggest threat is people ditching pay tv to go to FTA + Streaming. Rather than shoring up their NowTV offering, which is proving very popular at combating this threat, they're offering a turbocharged all-singing, all-dancing product? Who do they think is going to buy this? Affluent middle-class customers who've always had the 'top tier' but never watched 90% of it? Or working class people who are mad for sport? Both of these groups of customers have been cutting the cord in steady numbers, or at least defecting to rival, cheaper services.
Q strikes me as having been built by a tech geek (I recognise the signs). Why does it act as a bluetooth and airplay target? Talk about the kitchen sink! Sky Q - the answer to a question that nobody asked. |
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
Quote:
The big thing of the announcement is the content providers allowing better multi-device viewing rights; they are the people holding up the progress that most people want, not technology, as demonstrated by the restrictions on many channels on Tivo's MRS system. If Sky have bludgeoned the content providers on that one, then well done Sky |
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
I kind of see both your points , it confuses me how the press say Sky's answer to Netflix and Amazon when the price will far outweigh the cost of both of those services when took together.
I'm sitting on the fence at the moment until Sky announce packages and pricing etc. At current price levels there is an opportunity however if the box comes with huge upfront costs and a substantial monthly increase I'd say Sky will need a serious rethink and take up early on will be low. |
Re: General Sky TV Discussion

this was probably a good idea 2 and half years ago. |
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
I would say this is quite clearly Sky moving ahead of VM TiVo and BT Youview. They have NowTV doing very well against Netflix/Amazon.
SkyQ looks great to me, multiroom without the need for cables running everywhere. Put my recordings onto my iPad/iPhone for when I'm traveling and can't get a decent wifi/3-4g signal. I'm already signed up and awaiting my invitation to have it installed. Some people spend £100 a month on cigarettes I don't smoke, some people buy a bottle of wine a day £150 a month, I drink very rarely. Some people gamble £100 a month , I don't gamble. |

I think the devil's not going to be in the detail but in the pricing. Looks like great competition in the market which can only be a good thing.
|
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
One suspects the pricing is going to be pretty sky high one imagines.
|
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
Quote:
Another example, the original XBOX had a crazy launch price and within months had over £100 knocked of the price as it didn't sell. Quite simply it will be priced so people will buy it. |
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
Like a lot of things, I expect that it will be launched at one price which will appeal to all those who want the latest and best. It will then drop in price over time before becoming the standard Sky box. It will be interesting to see the difference in pricing for the 4K box and the reactions of BT and VM. Certainly, I think we will see a new Tivo from VM next year - the questions are when and what specifications?
|
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
Quote:
But, do you really think that VM won't have a new box in development? They would be crazy not to. And it could be as simple as re-purposing the Tivo Bolt software for use on new VM hardware. As far as I can see, after a quick look, the Bolt can do exactly what the Sky Q box will do. Yes, there are fewer tuners, but Tivo have said they are doing further development on the Roamio, which they have stated is a level above the Bolt. If VM have any sense, they will announce any future plans re hardware as soon as possible, now that Sky have announced their next gen box. |
Re: General Sky TV Discussion
Horses don't win races two furlongs out that's for sure....

Re: General Sky TV Discussion
Even in the USA Tivo isn't doing particularly well , most people are choosing the set top box provided by their pay tv platform.

Re: General Sky TV Discussion
I had three VM TiVo's from launch date and one of the reasons I got rid of them after a couple of years was because the promised multi room streaming never worked sufficiently well. There were too many recordings that had Rights issues so MRS was disabled. I also found the MRS interface at the time cumbersome with too many menus and sub menus to navigate. Finally having three STB's with three hard drives generating heat and noise and taking up space became less attractive.
How will Sky solve the MRS rights issues if VM weren't able? I can see sense in all recordings being on one central STB as with Sky Q. I also hope that Sky make apps available for Roku and Apple TV 4th Generation allowing access to the Sky Q recordings on the STB rather than requiring use of their Sky Q Mini device. It's a shame Sky also haven't released an HDMI stick so no need to site a mini STB next to a tertiary television at all. However my suspicion based on knowing Sky's M-O is they will lock it down to their own Sky Q Mini devices, attempting to keep competing hardware devices away from the eyeballs of consumers (most people don't want umpteen devices connected to their tertiary TV's these days). I wonder if it'll be possible to site a Sky Q Mini abroad and a Sky Q Silver box back in the UK, set up a site to site VPN and link the two. ;) |

Because I have no contract I'm shopping around for broadband deals. I no longer have a SKY box in the bedroom. I bought a Youview box at Christmas. Their offering prepaid mastercards to new subscirbers between £75 & £150 depending on which broadband package you take. |

It's actually a pretty useful feature I've been using it a while.
The download all feature adds all episodes to your planner but only downloads the first two initially once you start to watch the first episode the third changes from Pending to downloading so you've always two episodes on your box. |
