So what I don't understand is why, for SD, you get Tivo to upscale from 576 to 720 and then get your TV to upscale it again from 720 to 1080?

Every time you upscale, you lose picture quality, so doing just one upscale operation from 576 to 1080 in Tivo should be better.

If you could get Tivo to output 576 for SD, then your TV could upscale from 576 to 1080 and you would only be using one upscaling process.

Then it would come down to which is the best upscaler; your TV or Tivo.

Using an extra upscaling operation doesn't make sense to me, and theoretically should produce worse results.

I would have thought that the menus would look pretty rubbish at 576i/576p though.

Well, I always got my V+ HD to output at 720p. Why? Because that resolution is better for fast-moving action, especially sports. Some US sports channels actually broadcast at 720p for that reason. And 720p looked great on my V+ HD on my Full HD TV when viewing HD content.

I tried 1080i on my V+ HD and I couldn't tell the difference between that and 720p for HD content. Ditto now from the TiVo.

At the end, you have to trust what your eyes tell you.

If the menus are in 576, then that's what they are in and nothing can be done about it. It's working out the best path to upscale them so that they look their best when output on a 1080 pixel TV.

The pic on SS1 Soccer Scores is awful at the moment. Much worse than the V+ next door

---------- Post added at 16:56 ---------- Previous post was at 16:45 ----------

Does Tivo warn you when youve programmed to record 3 progs at once like the V+? or does it assume you will not watch live tv and allow the 3 tuners to record leaving you to figure it out?

It will ask you to change the channel if it is one that you watching and have not set to have set to be recorded.

I'd love to know why TiVo sometimes asks me if its OK to use a tuner for a recording when I'm already watching a recording, with 2 tuners free.

It should just do it already, Man-Up, and stop being so darn timid: :p:

"Errrr.......I know you're watching a recording, and as such, you're no longer using that tuner, you know, the one you were using to watch SSN, but....can I use that tuner to make....erm, a re-re-recording? Please?" :erm:

Do it already! :D

Apparently it's because you have used one or both of the other tuners recently and it thinks you might want what it is buffering. It's aimed at people who watch two (or more) channels at the same time, flicking between them and rewinding if it's an interesting bit.

Sorry. My reply was to the question "does Tivo warn you when you set three recordings at once" and the answer is "no it doesn't. it just sets all three recordings up".

If you have been watching a show for a while, IE from the start and say 15/30/45 mins in you decide to record it. It will record from up to a hour when you started watching the channel.

I was watching something for about 25 mins from the start and then pressed record and it recorded from when I first went to the channel:D:D

Hope this is clear?

Thanks, wasnt too sure exactly how this would work.

In my ideal world you would be able to browse the EPG, spot something that you would have liked to watch, and even though it had already started, hitting "record" would get you the entire show recorded. I suppose the "Wishlists" feature does this for you, up to a point.

No, but there are markers you can jump to every 15 mins. (30m in longer programmes and films). Plus it FF/REW's faster anyway so you can get to anywhere in a recording fairly quickly :)

Asked this question on "Niggles" thread

Just been on to BBC1 I.Player.
All the shows seem to be available, and in order, but the times are wildly out !!

For example Sunday:

Andrew Marr says 12.10pm - should be 9.00am
Eucharist says 8.15pm - should be 10.00am
Story of Jesus says 11.35am - correct!
Life of Riley says 8.00pm - should be 3.45pm

Any ideas ??

Is there a way to get program info without having to go into the full guide?

The OK button three channel mini guide is great but the info button does nothing when you press it.

To clarify, pressing OK will simply change the channel on one of the tuners to that channel. You can then either press "Info" or "Record".

Then it mentions not having a good enough UI which is the same arguement, you need to easily navigate around streamed or stored content, you don't need to for Live TV.

DNLA support would be great eliminating the need for a second box or having a 'flash' TV, but the rest of the article is just pointless filler.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I am due to have TiVo installed tomorrow (wed)

Last night (mon) while watching a recording my SA V+ left the recording and went to live tv, since then that's all it will do.
It will not show the programme guide or recordings or any V+ features (it will show the mini guide) it will not go into standby via remote or box. After speaking to three different 'faults' people last night and more this morning I am being told that my V+ service has been switched off so that it can be put onto the TiVo (remember I have not got it yet) CS say that it would be possible to reactivate my V+ but this would wipe recordings and more importantly stop my TiVo installation taking place tomorrow.
This seems crazy to me for two main reasons.
1. If only the V+ services have been deactivated why won't the box show the tv guide or go into standby?
2. I was 'phoned last week and told I could keep the V+ for another room free of charge. (the goodwill call)
Also why turn off one service before receiving the upgrade to another?
Comments welcome, hopefully some from DF and MB too.

My TiVo install day is tomorrow (Weds).
Just had a thought as last week I received the good will call from CS about keeping my existing box for free. However, I'm one of the few customers moving directly from an old silver Samsung SD box to TiVo. This will mean 'turning on' HD for my account for the first time. Surely I'm entitled to a V Box rather than keeping my old SD box? I've read loads of threads here about customers keeping their V+ box for free when they upgrade to TiVo. So my free deal isn't the same as other customers free deals. Correct?

Yes they are are and I got it for a while and then it stopped (touch wood). So it seems a common problem if you read across different forums (it has been called the HDMI HANDSHAKE).

Recordings will always resume from the point it was last stopped but no, there is no way to specify a point in the recording.

Press 'skip' when you either FF or REW to go to the next white marker. Plus Tivo FF/REW faster than V+ anyway so you should be able to get to any point in the programme very quickly anyway :)

Another great feature..
When FF to miss the ads and hit play
instead of being 10-20 secs into the show
(unless you are very good on the button;))
it clicks back a bit from when you it hit the button.
Very good.

VM have now credited me back the £40 install fee for Tivo which was mistakenly applied to my next bill, so all sorted now, thanks VM.

Unfortunately, I got so good at hitting just the right spot with this feature turned off on the original Tivo that this is one feature I do, truly actually, hate :( Wish they'd make it optional.

At the moment you can't register for the 500GB model at all, so hang on for a couple of weeks.

One other little annoyance is not being able to close the channel display/mini guide before it times out.

On the SA V+ you can press OK and it closes, is there a was to do the same on the TiVo?

Above Lew mentions pressing the play button in a recording, will this work for live TV as well?

Press the TV button and it should close the mini guide?

I think you can by pressing clear. Bottom left button.

After being sure that I was going to grab a TiVO the minute I could, I've had a bit of an outbreak of scrooge-ism. Things like stag do's, a new guitar and motorbike kit have all taken priority over a TiVO. I am still pretty interested in the half-TB model though. To save me trawling through this monster thread, is there anything else missing from this model apart from the storage space? 500Gb would still be a decent upgrade for me from 160Gb, and for only 50 bar? I think I might be sold!

I wouldn't have thought so; no.

For some reason, im trying to record EXILE and VERA on Sun, both at 21:00. Then CSI at 22:00. But it keeps telling im using all 3 tuners. Is this cause of the buffers?
If i try and change the episode date in the series link it wont!

Tivo installed - 40 minutes in total. Premium services moved from V+ to Tivo as requested. TV Guide first couple of days downloaded. All in all just as expected. PQ on SD looks acceptable to me, no significant difference to the SA V+.

Now to start finding out what it can do...

If you meant "padding" then yes, of course this can stop recordings being made if more than three things would be recording at the same time.

However, in this case, I also cannot see the problem as you are only recording two things at the same time.

You can go to http://m.virginmedia.com/tvguide which is available for all smartphones (although there is a known issues with the site at the moment which is being investigated)

I've had a similar thing to that. In my case it gave that message when I tried to set a series link, bit would let me add individual episodes.

A day later, I tried again and it worked fine and let me set series links. Maybe the next EPG update sorts things out?

Thanks. It is odd. When it confirms the triple recording it allows you too look for repeats of the show. When i found one in the year hours where there were no other recordings i selected to record that show instead of the original but it dosent seem to pick up that episode to record.

I tried adding it as an individual recording rather than series as your right. Very strange

No not currently although there should be mobile apps for the major platforms eventually.

If i try and change the episode date in the series link it wont!

That is unusual... are you sure there is not another show being recorded at the same time ?

Let's say you have 5 mins padding set.

21.00-22.00 you should have two tuners in play, 22.00-22.05 you should have 3 tuners recording, 22.05-23.00 you should have 1 recording.

Sounds like you have something else going on. Have a look at your expected recordings for the time slot in question.

Might be worth restating the recording priorities for TiVo:

1. Manual "one off" recordings
2. Series links, as per their priority in the manage series links page.
3. TiVo Suggestions.

Higher priority will clip lower priority recordings.

Padding wise there is still no default padding for your recordings, so you have to set it yourself. Suggestions get 10mins auto padding.

The main issue to be aware of is that a higher priority series link with say 5mins padding will clip a lower priority series link, so you miss the start of the next show. This is at odds with V+ where all series links are equal priority and the padding is simply dropped if need be.

VM will tell you that this shouldn't happen very often as you have 3 tuners to play with. In reality, broadcasters tend to show all their top shows in the 20/21/22 hrs slots so it's not uncommon.

Impossible. If you explicitly tell it to record something then it will record it.

Just got caught by the Pin Code Police - all I wanted to watch was the weather forecast on BBC One HD. I know the weather can be a bit dirty sometimes, but I don't think I'd classify it as an adult chanel.

My Tivo was installed last Thursday and I also got the free move of my V+. Excellent job done by engineer who had never done one before. He was just as intruiged with the Tivo as me!

All in all very happy with Tivo - very much faster to scroll through listings than the old V+

Not got the thumbs up and down sorted as yet so some of the suggestions are a bit wayward but I guess that that is just a matter of time.

Very happy chappy here

When you to your suggestions if you do not like the show from the main list, Click on it and you are able to give the thumbs up/down and then delete or keep the programme.

Hope this help?

Hi all, I have been reading almost all of the threads on the Tivo box having changed my mind on a few occasions due to what I have read on here. It is getting installed this afternoon (wed). Did all the email stuff ended phoning to place order after 48hrs of not receiving a confirmation of install date.

I was phoned by VM last week to see if I wanted to keep my V+ HD box free of charge so I said yes thanks, even though I had already said I will pay the extra £6:50, happy so far just waiting for virgin technician to turn up.

---------- Post added at 15:03 ---------- Previous post was at 14:59 ----------

Update, VM technician as just phoned and his on his way.
