Weird results today from TBB, my speed/pings to various sites hasn't changed so I'm guessing it's something on TBB's end..

Definitely your end

try running a ping to bbc.co.uk then one to pingbox1.thinkbroadband.com

Weird, 2s average ping to bbc and .5s ping to TBB yet the websites, youtube and various others are all working fine including other protocols like usernet, P2P..etc..

Does Sky Fibre use DLM, I see your line shows a nice dip in minimum latency after an outage and just wondered.

Yeah it does, and that wasnt an outage, just that my DDWRT router has to re-establish a connection. Its to do with the MAC encapsulated routing which makes it take longer to connect, otherwise there would hardly be any packet loss

Its a nice drop though - sub 10ms ping with no jitter ;)

I don't think there's any option for any provider using Openreach FTTC to turn off DLM completely, yet.

Cheers craig/qas, I was just being nosey :),,,,,,I wish I was brave enough to have a go at hacking this rather pants Sagemcom paper weight but it'll just end in tears I know it, and a bricked router probably :D

you dont have to do anything to the router itself, just type in the number from the sticker on the bottom into a website. No chance of a bricked router

Things are always easy when you know how, i think I could do the install possibly but I recall (I think it was you) that you have to install a line of code somewhere and thats the bit I don't understand.

Obviously having never installed DDWRT before is a slight concern, as in knowing which build to use etc.

Like I say, having never done this before makes me a little apprehensive, but seen as youve sparked off my interest I might dust off my Linky and give it a go tonight.

My apologies for derailing this thread so if (and when) I get stuck I will take it too PM if thats OK :).

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Just go to

http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

put in "WRT610N"

There are 2 revisions, 1 and 2, just find which yours is, download the build, install it to the router (its as simple as that)

The adding the code, is literally copying and pasting a line of code to a text box on the router and clicking save, nothing exciting :p:

and as you say....

"If it aint broke, modify and make it better"

Amount of times a router should need to be rebooted because of a firmware problem

So you've had plenty more problems that weren't cured by a simple reboot?

Chrysalis 21-11-2012 22:30

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

its as I predicted, VM simply flicking switches to upgrade people as after all thats pretty much free, just a config has to be made for modem, then they only upgrade if congestion gets too serious (and I suspect also if complaints high enough).

Cheaper than doing it the proper way, doubling capacity everywhere and then only after that upgrading customers.

Whilst it does seem some areas are getting upgrades prior to the switch, I be surprised if its anywhere near doubling of capacity.

40.0 to 40.0 :) The other checker does say up to 74 but pretty sure it would do the full 80 easily. 40 is more than enough for my needs anyway. Don't have to play the game of getting a higher speed to avoid traffic management triggers with sky unlimited, unlike VM.

Generate live or x day graph then right click and select copy image location (firefox) copy image url (chrome) or right click and go to properties then copy the line that says address (url) (IE 10). Then paste it in to the add image button while posting.

Usually there's a larger peak hour rump but download speeds are barely affected. Upstream suffers somewhat during those peaks but I don't think my area has yest upgraded the upstream capacity.

If infinity lets you order then Sky might be able to do it over the phone/manually.

Time will tell if I regret my decision.

There was a significant delay from our exchange being done to Sky actually being able to offer anything - the Sky rep said something about not having the licenses yet?

Only conceivable reason I can think of for that is if you P2P heavily.

very occasionally and even then its download only.

legal content only. Things like cyanogen mod android rom which is distributed via p2p and certian freeware apps.

As long as BT dont treat unclassified as p2p or have false positives the shaping shouldnt cause me issues.

I'm new to these forums, in fact, I only really joined after seeing this thread!

Had a technician come round tonight after constant packet loss (see below)

He's literally only just left, but I showed him the state of this graph and he said he didn't understand what could be causing it... Will see how it is now he's left and altered my power levels.

heavy downstream load and a bit of upstream/lack of capacity on the network that can handle the load. whats the ETA you get from VMs speed doubles site for your area?

If this is aimed at me... We've had ours doubled from 30mb to 60mb already (TS18). It's been doubled for a couple of months now, right about when I started having issues funnily enough :dozey:

thenry 26-11-2012 18:49

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

yeah it was aimed at you buddy.

TS18 - Your speed upgrade is going
to take a little longer. We estimate your area will be ready between: May 2013 and August 2013. Our engineers are still working on the fibre optic network in your area.

the local network will get its capacity upgrade closer to the completion ETA above.

have you looked at BT or Sky fibre? go on BTs site and check what estimates it gives you for fibre.

---------- Post added at 18:49 ---------- Previous post was at 18:45 ----------

btw did you power down then up the SH around 6pm? it looks like it found a new channel or the down/uploaders went offline or both or sorted itself out

Wow, seriously? I assumed it'd doubled already with me not having a price increase other than that in April (unless that was a crafty way of covering the upgrades?)

We've looked into BT infinity but it's not available in our area. I haven't checked sky fibre though, I doubt they will be available either :(

------

A technician came out at 6, we've been having issues for months, emails flying backwards and forwards from the ceo office, PTs coming out to check things etc... He left about half an hour ago.

My graphs always look good after they've been. A few days later they go back to their yellow spiky messy self!

Sorry to sound like an absolute dummy... But what does this mean? Are certain channels better than others and do they just hook onto these channels at random?

Interesting. I just wish I knew what it all meant! When the PT came round he told me to keep an eye on my Upstream TX power and Downstream SNR levels, along with keeping a check on my post RS errors (of which I have 19 since the engineer reset my router and left). That page would come in handy (although I was checking it on the network status page).

This whole thing baffles me... All I know is that I'll not give up hassling the director of transmission operations until I have an internet connection I'm happy with :D

Mines looking great, i also had a 2nd upstream channel added this morning around 10am, the large red lines are where i rebooted the SH.

There is a strange dip in minimum latency every 2 hours, not sure what that could be.

So VM now have global reach? ;)

Probably a glitch on the link from the TBB ping server to VM's network?

I got massive slowness on establishing connections right now, eg. web pages pause before loading, image heavy pages have huge issues, sending an email takes 10 seconds etc.

However my tbb graph looks ok been 8.30am so am baffled.

Might be VM's DNS servers? They kept going so slow for me I switched to openDNS and all pages loaded up so much faster.
