Extra features only the tech minded would bother about that wont sell many. Most people just want to record and series link. Not everyone has even heard of Tivo. Seems crazy to have two lots of software on boxes.

This is the most significant "coming soon to VM tv" news, there has been, it needs to be shouted a bit louder:

Sky Sports HD is coming soon to VM.

What a shame this doesn't include Sky's HD film channels.

Totally agree,There are spending all this time getting everybody on the same NGTV system and now there is talk of 2 different systems again(crazy).I personally paid £10per month when i got my first TVdrive(V+box)and then had to pay £100 to stop the charges and now everyone on xl gets the box for free the TIVO needs to be extra special for me to justify forking out again and they need to be especially carefull with the cost. Now they are finally getting the HD Channels and looks like SKY SPORTS HD channels are coming so will some sky customers but if costs start rising then thats going to derail the excellent work they are doing.

Well, yes, it's speculation in the fact that no deal is agreed yet. But do you really think VM have turned off analogue and all the associated costs in upgrading their network just to get National Geographic in HD?

HD sports is THE subscription driver. It's a game changer and why Sky have fought (and still fighting) to prevent competitors getting wholesale access to it.

If there's one thing we can be 100% certain will happen is that Sky Sports HD will be on cable by summer.

If I were to guess, I'd say VM would continue with the pricing structure that they currently use for HD. So if subscribers already pay for Sky Sports and are in the XL pack, VM will throw in HD sports for free.

Absolutely no chance, each sub will be costing them they simply can not afford to run on that big a loss.

The ofcom report also has lower pricings for Sky sports.

What they could do, is keep the current pricing, and include HD.

Berkett said in the Q&A that they are firm believers that small price increases for large amounts of subscribers is far better than larger costs for a small amount.

The ad opens with a family at home and about to experience High Definition TV from Virgin Media for the first time. Handed the remote control, the son turns on the TV and the living room fills with light as we join a football match in full flow. At the touch of a button the scene changes and the room is filled with penguins. As the remote control is raised once more soldiers crawl across the living room floor and, as a final explosion strikes, the family sits back, awestruck. The ad closes on “Virgin Media. Amazing HD. No extra monthly fee.”
That will be a hard act to follow when they launch 3D TV! :2cents:

Because ofcom only ruled on Sky Sports 1 and 2, so Sky can still tell VM to jog on when it comes to the others.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

It depends really on the outcome of Sky Movies which was refereed to the competition commission.

What we really need is them to be forced into wholesaling Sky Movies HD as well, then there's no reason for them to withhold the other HD channels as they'd have lost exclusivity on the core premium channels, and Sky Sports 3 & 4 aren't really worth anything as exclusives.

Whilst it's still just Sky sports 1 and 2 HD they have to offer there's still more than enough there for them to withhold the rest. VM gain 2 HD channels, whilst Sky keep hold of the 10 movie channels, and Sky Sports 3 and 4. 12 more "premium" HD channels is a big selling point, whereas just 2 isn't.

Virgin Media TV - no plans for the sale of VM TV or its 50% ownership of UKTV, in fact VM are looking to grow with HD conversion of some of these channels.

Living HD/Sky1 HD - DONE DEAL - a pure swap deal fully expecting some kind of press release in the coming weeks.

Sky HD Pack - VM&Sky have already started to broker a deal for these channels - note these are for Sky's 100% HD channels - Not Joint Ownership HD channels i.e. MGM, Bio etc etc and ?s around the Five HD deal.

Don’t read too much into if the Tories win - The fact that Ofcom has issued the report means neither Labour or the Tories can overturn this ruling, the ruling can only be overturned if Sky take this through the European courts and win.

If the Tories do win and strip all power from Ofcom then that does not mean they can overturn all previous Ofcom rulings made.

The Sky HD pack is expected before the summer

I'm not going to get involved in replying to each post quoting the above - the fact I have a very close and trusted friend within VM.

I will post more if and when I get any other information.

It depends on the program :) Always check to see if it is HD or not by pressing 'i'
e.g. ITV1 HD shows either [HD] or [Remastered HD] which is upscaled. If no [HD] tag is shown, then it's SD

Decided to email Neil Berkett regarding TiVo, here is the email correspondence:

From:

Subject: Virgin Digital TV Service and TiVo

Dear Mr Berkett

I am a long standing NTL/Virgin Media customer and would like to start by saying the service is fantastic. Great and reliable broadband and TV service, I am a regular user of video on demand.

It is on the subject of Virgin's digital TV I'd like to ask a question. From various internet sources I understand Virgin have entered into a deal with TiVo to develop a new user interface (UI) for it's next generation TV service. I understand this service will launch later this year. I know that you won't be able go give many details on the deal, but I do have one question. I currently have two standard V boxes and a V+HD box (both Samsung branded) and would like to know if the new TiVo software will be available on these or if new hardware will be released to run this? Various articles and forums on the internet seem to be suggesting new hardware and that Virgin's current set top boxes will not run this new software. Would it be possible to confirm if the new TiVo software will be available at all on any of the current set top boxes or if it will only be available on yet unreleased hardware?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

It also claimed that all programming on Discovery, Sci-Fi, E4, ITV1 etc was also available in HD. Really? So putting aside the fact that many Virgin customers don't even get the new HD channels, you're now claiming an upscale is HD?

Yep, remember this. Quite liked it when it was on the old analogue satellite Astra 1a, I think. I seem to recall though, that it was broadcast from Luxembourg or some place like that and it was a foreign owned station, despite the Sky moniker.

If it still exists, I doubt it will ever come to cable.

Where does it say that? I've just had a look at the April edition and can't see that.

Although all programming on Discovery HD actually is HD as it's a dedicated channel with it's own schedule.

I hope so, although I'll take that with the proverbial pinch of salt. Virgin have bungled HD for so long now I struggle to believe they'll ever do anything well.

I can't honestly say I'd be surprised if I didn't see the new HD channels until closer to the end of the year.

As VM have said they are going to continue to upgrade the UI on the current boxes then I am glad because it really needs a new look and feel to it now. I was massively disappointed when we lost the blue ntl: EPG cause it lost functionality and overall it was better designed. We shall have to wait and see what the offering might be when they do change them.

I hope they don't go with that though.

Is there no way now of seeing this epg mockup. Will this epg be released to all boxes. Is it nothing to do with TIVO.

Hmm, hope they have a rethink about the colour scheme, but they didn't show much of it.

Red menu screens will just make most people's eyes bleed.

If someone can upload it to http://www.sharebee.com/ , then it will upload it to 4 different file hosts, therefore making sure it's almost certainly available to everyone.

Im not really sure i like it to be honest.

Why do it so it goes right across the screen like that? why can Virgin do it like the HD epg on Sky?

moroboshi 02-05-2010 16:52

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

Having watched the video I really hope that's an incredibly early place holder design. If not, Virgin seriously need to get some UI designers in to show them how things should be done. It still looks like something from the 8-bit era.

Good interface design is not hard to find now, all Virgin need do is buy an Xbox 360 or an Apple product. Heck even the PS3's basic store front makes the Virgin stuff look weak by comparison.

zantarous 02-05-2010 16:53

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

At least it is using all the screen real estate and not just the 4:3 area. Also it is only one section the TV Guide may be different. Also most EPGs have had the same boring layout for years it is nice to see something that is different.

What mainstream products have used that, I have been a cable subscriber for over 12 years and the only place I have seen stuff like is in XBMC? It is only kind of sort of used in the Virgin Central which I always thought really nice.

General Election 2010 in HD on Virgin Media.

We may miss out on the General Election Results coming in on Thursday night in HD with Sky News.

But the BBC (And maybe even ITV1) will be broadcasting on General Election Results show LIVE on BBC HD from 21.55 on Thursday night.

I used it in one of those internet tv boxes years ago, it used on a fair few websites and to a lesser extent it's used on the ipod and also on the horrendous xbmc.

Personally I hate it but then I often hate change :D

For the new boxes, V HD and the boxes they will be releasing at the back end of this year, they will be using the TiVO software, for the rest of the Virgin boxes they will probably use their existing software provider for them. :)

so lets recap !!!

if you have a new V HD box currently or in the future then you will get a software upgrade to allow the new TiVO EPG to work.

if you have a V+ box that you paid a premium to be installed (in some cases up to £150) you get a choice to stay with the old EPG and system, pay another premium to get a TiVO PVR or take a downgrade to the V HD box.

dont get me wrong but it seems out of order to screw the guys again who already paid a premium to get the V+ PVR box in the first place.
VM need to stop all this splitting of the customer bases as its totally stupid. look at the hasstle with the NGTV roll out to standardise the customers and then go and split it again. it seems a silly move to me and to roll over the prmium customers is an even dafter move.

Ben B 02-05-2010 21:09

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

Pretty much, though they have only said they might choose to put the TiVO EPG on the V HD box

Splitting is an inevitable consequence of making progress. Without splitting you'd have had no digital TV, no VOD, no PVR, no HD...

At the moment no, Sky Sports, Sky1 and some other HD channels are on VM top priority list.

But if VM manage to convert Virgin 1, Bravo and Good Food into HD channels and add the very poplar Living HD, this will give VM more bargaining power to get other HD channels from Sky.

As you know Sky want to get to 50 HD channels by end of the year, in doing this the likes of Sky2 and Sky Sports News etc will be converted to HD.

VM have scrapped the UKTV/VM TV Channel sale and are looking to do the same.

Other rumours are Virgin are looking into a Virgin News Channel which will get both SD/HD treatment.

WillPS 03-05-2010 00:04

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

If there is the be a VM News channel, it would have to be ITN driven. Not that that's a bad thing, just ironic that we could be in exactly the same place as we were 10 years ago with ITN News Channel.
