HD sports is THE subscription driver. It's a game changer and why Sky have fought (and still fighting) to prevent competitors getting wholesale access to it. If there's one thing we can be 100% certain will happen is that Sky Sports HD will be on cable by summer. |

What they could do, is keep the current pricing, and include HD. Berkett said in the Q&A that they are firm believers that small price increases for large amounts of subscribers is far better than larger costs for a small amount. |

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
It depends really on the outcome of Sky Movies which was refereed to the competition commission.
What we really need is them to be forced into wholesaling Sky Movies HD as well, then there's no reason for them to withhold the other HD channels as they'd have lost exclusivity on the core premium channels, and Sky Sports 3 & 4 aren't really worth anything as exclusives. Whilst it's still just Sky sports 1 and 2 HD they have to offer there's still more than enough there for them to withhold the rest. VM gain 2 HD channels, whilst Sky keep hold of the 10 movie channels, and Sky Sports 3 and 4. 12 more "premium" HD channels is a big selling point, whereas just 2 isn't. |

It depends on the program :) Always check to see if it is HD or not by pressing 'i'
e.g. ITV1 HD shows either [HD] or [Remastered HD] which is upscaled. If no [HD] tag is shown, then it's SD |

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
Decided to email Neil Berkett regarding TiVo, here is the email correspondence:
From: To: Berkett, Neil Sent: Thu Apr 29 20:56:22 2010 Subject: Virgin Digital TV Service and TiVo Dear Mr Berkett I am a long standing NTL/Virgin Media customer and would like to start by saying the service is fantastic. Great and reliable broadband and TV service, I am a regular user of video on demand. It is on the subject of Virgin's digital TV I'd like to ask a question. From various internet sources I understand Virgin have entered into a deal with TiVo to develop a new user interface (UI) for it's next generation TV service. I understand this service will launch later this year. I know that you won't be able go give many details on the deal, but I do have one question. I currently have two standard V boxes and a V+HD box (both Samsung branded) and would like to know if the new TiVo software will be available on these or if new hardware will be released to run this? Various articles and forums on the internet seem to be suggesting new hardware and that Virgin's current set top boxes will not run this new software. Would it be possible to confirm if the new TiVo software will be available at all on any of the current set top boxes or if it will only be available on yet unreleased hardware? I look forward to hearing from you. Regards ----- Original Message ----- From: Berkett, Neil To: Sent: Thursday, April 29, 2010 9:06 PM Subject: Re: Virgin Digital TV Service and TiVo Hi Our current V+ boxes will not support TiVo but our new V HD boxes will. It also claimed that all programming on Discovery, Sci-Fi, E4, ITV1 etc was also available in HD. Really? So putting aside the fact that many Virgin customers don't even get the new HD channels, you're now claiming an upscale is HD? Virgin's PR BS machine still working overtime. |

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
As VM have said they are going to continue to upgrade the UI on the current boxes then I am glad because it really needs a new look and feel to it now. I was massively disappointed when we lost the blue ntl: EPG cause it lost functionality and overall it was better designed. We shall have to wait and see what the offering might be when they do change them.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
Im not really sure i like it to be honest.
Why do it so it goes right across the screen like that? why can Virgin do it like the HD epg on Sky? |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
Having watched the video I really hope that's an incredibly early place holder design. If not, Virgin seriously need to get some UI designers in to show them how things should be done. It still looks like something from the 8-bit era.
Good interface design is not hard to find now, all Virgin need do is buy an Xbox 360 or an Apple product. Heck even the PS3's basic store front makes the Virgin stuff look weak by comparison. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
At least it is using all the screen real estate and not just the 4:3 area. Also it is only one section the TV Guide may be different. Also most EPGs have had the same boring layout for years it is nice to see something that is different.
|
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

if you have a new V HD box currently or in the future then you will get a software upgrade to allow the new TiVO EPG to work. if you have a V+ box that you paid a premium to be installed (in some cases up to £150) you get a choice to stay with the old EPG and system, pay another premium to get a TiVO PVR or take a downgrade to the V HD box. dont get me wrong but it seems out of order to screw the guys again who already paid a premium to get the V+ PVR box in the first place. VM need to stop all this splitting of the customer bases as its totally stupid. look at the hasstle with the NGTV roll out to standardise the customers and then go and split it again. it seems a silly move to me and to roll over the prmium customers is an even dafter move. |

Any rumours on Sky Movies HD being part of any VM HD pack ? |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
Quote:
But if VM manage to convert Virgin 1, Bravo and Good Food into HD channels and add the very poplar Living HD, this will give VM more bargaining power to get other HD channels from Sky. As you know Sky want to get to 50 HD channels by end of the year, in doing this the likes of Sky2 and Sky Sports News etc will be converted to HD. VM have scrapped the UKTV/VM TV Channel sale and are looking to do the same. Other rumours are Virgin are looking into a Virgin News Channel which will get both SD/HD treatment. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)
If there is the be a VM News channel, it would have to be ITN driven. Not that that's a bad thing, just ironic that we could be in exactly the same place as we were 10 years ago with ITN News Channel.
