I don't think he'll be the only one walking the plank. He was undoubtedly going anyway but this is most likely a strategically released decision to divert attention from the team in the current run of poor form. Gives the snouts in the press something else to jibber-jabber and speculate about in the run-up to the semi.

Or maybe it is for the fans..to show something is being done

We need to win 4 out of our next 5 to be sure of a 3rd place finish. 2 games is enough to find ourselves in 5th! After the season we've had 3rd would be incredible, 4th great. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will this summer look to lure Ajax pair Jan Vertonghen & Christian Eriksen after being assured by his board that funds will be made available to him in order to launch a significant bid for the duo.

then you'll know that Vertonghen has sent out a come and get me plea and Arsenal will begin talks this month with Ajax regarding the transfer fee. his contracts up next summer so the likelyhood of an inflated fee are extremely slim especially when dealing with Arsenal.

danielf what positions does he play? ive read that he can play across the backline and in the holding midfield role. he's possibily going to be slotted in at leftback if he joins Arsenal.. will he do well there?

Vertonghen is a ball playing centre-half with good technical skills and a decent turn of pace. Not sure how he would fare in the premiership against teams who base their game on lumping it into the box. Similar type of player to Chivu so perhaps he could slot in well at left back.
