Re: Introduce yourselves

Incognitas has resurrected this thread apparently to try to encourage some the many 'lurkers' to overcome their shyness, perhaps to register and even to post. I am one of those lurkers. May I give my reasons for not taking an active part in this forum. I apologise for the length of this identities first post but feel this needs to be said. No, I do not have multiple IDs.

This thread first appeared the day that we were invited by Russ to leave .com and join the new independent .co forum. I was one of those who came across and registered on the first day and even introduced myself on this very thread using using my old .com name. I can assure her that the problem is not one of shyness and my reregistering now is for the sole purpose of explaining why some of us do not wish to join in here.

One of the very first threads on this forum rapidly turned into an any subject " almost chat" thread, this became the most popular thread on the forum with thousands of posts. It was stopped and (I believe) deleted by the admins who said that this forum was a discussion forum and had not to be used for 'inane' chatting (my word not theirs).

Look at the forum now. The upper half of the thread list (General NTL) is still relevant and tries to be helpful. However in Duffy's Dorm, although there is still the occaisional interesting discussion, the situation has mostly degenerated into farce. You have husbands having conversations with their wives, fathers having chats with their daughters, People even posting their wedding photographs (I have no desire to look at my brother's wedding photos let alone those of a complete stranger). Just look at the titles of some of the threads, do they tempt the 'lurker' to come on in? No, not at all. In fact, they give a distinct impression of utter drivel.

Going down (in more ways than one) we arrive at the feedback section. I will pick just two of the threads to comment on from here. Firstly the discussion about whether to make public the giving of reps. As a completely disinterested party, from my viewing of this (and previous rep) threads, the rep system is, as someone suggested earlier, very much a nepotistic system and not really a reward to mark good service to the members. This thread has been dominated by those who it appears are those with most to lose if repping is visible to all.

Secondly, this thread, since it was 'bumped up' approximately 24 members have posted (not counting admins). One person has made 21 posts, one has made 12, one 7, one 5, four have made 3, five have made 2 and the rest 1.

This monopolisation by a very few is repeated throughout the entire botton half of the forum and regrettably the vast majority of those posts by the monopolisers are utterly boring rubbish.

I apologise again if I have offended some of you. When I was formerly a member, some of you became good friends but I am sorry to say that there is no way that I or some of my contacts, would ever become active members again whilst this situation continues. Now, having put my point of view forward and I hope given a valid reason why so many lurkers do not become posters, I will shrink back into the shadows and post no more.

If this is the case for most of the lurkers why do so many hang around the site?If there is nothing for them here why show so much interest?
I don't hang around a site unless I'm considering joining a site.If I've become disenchanted with a place, I leave never to return.
My aim was to get those who do want to be here to actually participate,to break the ice and to post.I wasn't aiming at those who can't stand the place.I just found it interesting that at times there are more 'guests' than members which is why I asked folk to register.
AS for the same few members posting so much, well that's what this little exercise was about to try and get others more involved. As I remember as a former .com member it was the very same social forums that had the most interest shown in them.If you find the postings boring rubbish why not submit some postings of your own and see how the site develops from there?Perhaps you could only post in the more technical forums.

As for the rep system well you are free to turn it off and not participate. However maybe instead of using in the manner that you think the majority use it you could actually use it in the way it should be used. You only have to rep those who do offer good technical expertise and no one else.Personally I wish there were more people participating as I find it hard to really give kudos to those who really are the most prolific at offering assistance because I can never find enough people that I haven't repped before getting back to someone who constantly gives excellent help. The more there are here on a regular basis the more I can truly rep those that deserve the kudos.Anyway you are the recipient of a....

Re: Introduce yourselves

I agree Incog... Yes there are a lot of social threads where members have a laugh.. Whats wrong with that ???

There are allso a lot of technical threads where some damb good advice and help is given. !!!

Its nice to have the fun parts of the forum - It stops this site just being technical and gives it an element of fun... This makes the forum a fun and productive place IMO....

If you have a genuine greivance with any of the members of the site, or with the site in general, why create a second ID (which, unless the first has been deleted, is a multiple ID) to complain? Why not use the original ID?
