In fact, where's the logic in any of the numbering anymore? Why is BBC4 on 107 in SD but on 163 in HD? (and 106 is empty!)

I'm surprised the programme makers aren't up in arms - it's an absolute farce

Although it is better than Sky's, channel numbering on cable has always been one of the big three issues with cable tv. The other two being speed/usability and missing channels.

As I always say, I can move the channels wherever I want and whatever number I want on my Freeview boxes.

And before someone says but what about the local versions of say BBC One which are not in HD. I have BBBC 1 HD on ch 101 and BBC 1 SD London on Ch999 - right next to each other. Plus I have ITV SD London on 998 not too far from ITV HD on ch 103. Simple.

Why can't I do this on cable, especially as I'm paying a premium for the tv service??

The VM EPG is a mess, but to be fair to VM, some positions are down to contractual agreements, operational considerations & the fact that their EPG is subject to regulatory requirements.

It's simple when going on an SD channel present a prompt to be taken direct to the HD variant if there is one. They do this in the USA but if you think are EPG's are a mess try theirs.

Now that would be a good idea.

Errr the TiVo software is slow as it is, imagine another variable at line 45.
It is dead easy to implement HD swap, or hide SD channels, my grandkids could code it, if Virgin where interested in it, it would have been done before now.

But if that means to access the HD channels you have to go their SD versions first, then I wouldn't be keen on that. I much prefer my method, I choose to put them wherever I want and on whatever number I want.

Ah, we don't want it to go any slower!

There looks to be a few changes in EPG positions & packs coming up as well as a new Disney channel:

170 Investigation Discovery (M+) (was 253)
171 Investigation Discovery +1 (Mix) was 254)
189 True Entertainment now M+ package (was Mix)
213 DMAX (Mix) (was 170)
214 DMAX+1 (Mix) (was 171)
330 Box Upfront (was 338)
336 Box Hits (was 337)
337 4Music (was 330)
338 Kiss (was 336)
420 Movies 24 + was M+ package now Fun TV package
424 True Movies/Christmas was Fun TV package, now M+
830 Disney UTV - new channel*

* I'm really surprised that this movie channel is joining VM, it wasn't long ago (September??) that Disney said they were pulling out due to losses and everybody assumed it would close

Is it on Sky or anywhere else in the UK?

Those on the next to the lowest tier appear to be losing Movies 24 and gaining True Entertainment & True Movies.

Disney utv is a hindu channel as far as i know, i can confirm it is not on BT TV don't know about SKY though.
So those on second lowest tier are losing a pay channel but getting 2 channels that are on freeview anyway in return, yup that makes sense lol.

Exactly.

Yes it's an Asian channel, at first I thought it was a collaboration between UTV Ireland & Disney!!

It makes sense from the point of view that you often see VM customers asking why some channels are only available in the higher packs when they available to everyone with Freeview.

There are many issues with the PSB channels that currently stop an HD swap:

BBC1 has no english regional HD varients, so the SD channel is placed first in england, HD in Scotland, Wales & N. Ireland. With VM/Sky/Freesat 101 is the top of the EPG so has to carry the SD version. Freeview has the only type of box allowing single digit EPG numbers, so is tied to channel 1.

Conversely BBC2 is the other way around, as there are no HD varients in the national regions.

ITV is quite simply a mess. Some regions or parts thereof have HD, some don't, & they also differ between the platforms (ITV Anglia east is available in HD on Satellite, but not Freeview or cable, so viewers on these platforms get Meridian SE ITV HD instead).

Then channels 4 & 5 carry targetted advertising on their SD channels (5 regional varients for channel 4, & 4 for channel 5).

Isn't it the channel previously known as UMP Movies? They didn't use the UTV name here as it was already taken by the Channel 3 franchise operator.

Makes sense as far as the channel owner is concerned. They can't make any money from a Freeview customer, but they can take a cut of the pack income on a pay platform & get some return on their outlay, so why shouldn't they.

Viacom switched things around somewhat and scrapped the advertising regions for Channel 5. Channel 4's SD regions still exist, although a little odd to hang on to them with them not being mirrored on 4HD.

I'm not sure, I'm only going by the new VM channel guide.

UMP Movies doesn't appear to be on VM after a quick look, but channel 830 is currently vacant, so you could well be right.

Perhaps the new channel has been assigned the wrong name in error??

Edit: UMP Movies closed down at the end of last September in the UK and was replaced by Rishtey Cineplex, maybe it's that that's coming as it's already launched on Sky. This article from 29/9/16 says that "it may launch on VM in the future":

Having checked the new guide, I don't think I will be using it. Some nice colours with the new format but the content doesn't seem to be very accurate. It also shows XXX Mums on 977, which disappeared around the time that Babenation launched.

It says a lot when they can't even get their official Channel Guide right.

Has anyone else noticed how VM appear to have stopped saying that they don't charge extra for HD channels?

Because VM hide the charge in the XL pack.

This is true, but VM used to make a big thing out of saying that their HD was included at no extra cost, but seem to have stopped.

Maybe the Advertising Standards Authority have made them or they've realised that they aren't fooling anybody.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Sky used to have a HD pack for £10 per month (I think it was). You could add it to any of their other packs (eg Original) to get the relevant channels in HD. Now you have to subscribe to the Box Sets pack to get any pay HD channels - so essentially it's the same pricing model as Virgin have always had, therefore VM don't have anything to shout about any more.

It's not really hidden any more than any other channel in XL pack is 'hidden'. They are just additional channels you get for taking the more expensive package. Both Virgin and Sky make clear the number of HD channels you get with each TV pack and also which ones.

Perhaps the statement was causing too many issues. Many new or upgrading customers also wrongly assumed the statement covered the Sky premium channels, which of course at the time it did not (And still doesn't as far as Sky Sports is concerned).

That explains it then, it just occurred to me the other day as to why they don't mention it in their advertising any more.

The Sky Q box is also rented, another idea that's been pinched from the VM business model.

You could go that way and say VM pinched the rented idea from tv rental companies too.

But we found that Virgin Media UK added all the "Previews" info late on Friday night.

Channels own by Discovery.
Channels own by The Box Plus Network (Bauer Media Group/Channel Four Television Corporation)
Channels own by Sony.

We know that Virgin Media UK has sign an new deal with Discovery and Sony.

Channels moving packages will be down to new deals signed with Broadcasters.

Maybe Discovery have ask Virgin Media UK to move DMAX and ID to new channel numbers soon.

Box Plus Network did move channels about early this year when the two new BOX Channels did launch on Sky.

I think Plusnet and TalkTalk do the same except I think TalkTalk's contract is 18 months.
As well as making the contract "stickier" in marketing-speak, renting equipment fits into the concept of people moving towards a sharing economy and away from an ownership one. So people rent access to books on Kindle but don't own them; people rent cars from Zipcar but don't own them; people rent PVRs from VM and Sky but don't own them.

Amazon and Netflix both offer excellent picture quality and their fair share of decent shows.

Netflix 4K is amazing...I'd recommend anyone with a 4K tele upgrading their Netflix account. Hopefully it will run just a quick through the new V6 box as it does the tv app.

If you use the games apps, I agree. However, there's nothing wrong with the players and Netflix. Hayu is good for reality TV addicts.

The only problem with the VM apps is that they can take longer than you would expect to load. However, that should be a thing of the past once we get the V6 box.

It has a nice ring to it but wouldn't the East Midlands have felt left out though?

I think they'll be covered by Made in Lecister when that launches, but i think rather than local city channels, regional would be better so we'd have channels like made in midlands (covers all the midlands), made in Lancashire (covers lancashire) and so on, would prob save a fair few bob too.

Leicester will be missing out on local TV (unless they get a cable only service) as there is no interleaved spectrum available. The only East Midlands local TV service in the current plan has already launched (Notts TV from transmitters at Nottingham/Waltham).

That's not the attitude Den! Surely you should be saying:
1) It's going to slow my Tivo down.
2) You have to pay extra for the service.
3) I don't like anything that Amazon offers, why don't they give me good channels like Sky do?
4) They're only doing it to get commission from Amazon not for their customers.
5) Why are VM wasting my money doing this when I can get it on my smart TV?
6) Why can't they give me Sky Atlantic? VM were offered it at a great price but decided to give me foreign TV channels and slow pay TV apps instead.
;)

Amazon Apps are already on loads of devices that are connected to people's TVs.

Unless you don't have a Smart TV or a console connected to your TV, I cannot see the big deal in this, sorry guys.
For me it's no issue to connect to Netflix and Amazon through the Smart TV app instead of using the Tivo box. It's probably a lot quicker to be honest.

Presumably it also means you can search across all sources, potentially saving time and money if content is available free on one service but charged on another.
I think this timing sits well with the new series from Clarkson & Co and I wonder if it will appear on other boxes like YouView.

I would agree with all that , I'd say as a non Virgin Media subscriber I'm pretty neutral on the news , its not something that would instantly turn my head and want to make me subscribe that said I can see the merits of accessing your subscriptions through the one box for me certainly not essential but convenient.

I'd imagine the next platform to add Amazon will be Youview as BT's head of TV has already stated they'd like to. Sky is still taking a more cautious view on adding these services which is understandable being that they provide lots of their own content. It's something what they seem to be keeping an eye on if surveys are anything to go by.

One thing that IS quite handy with having the apps on one box is that (for those of us with surround sound/AV Receiver set up) you don't have to fiddle around with alternating inputs etc. to the AV equipment.

That being said, I have an Apple TV and Amazon Fire connected to my AV receiver and tend to use these for Netflix/Amazon/iPlayer etc. on demand stuff. They are just just way faster than the TiVo box.

I have a surround sound...just whack an optical cable from the surround sound to the TV...hey presto...everything connected to the TV including Consoles, DVD players will work through it ;)

But same here...I use Netflix and such apps through the TV/Console, Tivo just takes sooooo long. Plus through the TV I can access the 4K content. Whether I'd use the V6 to access 4K might depend on how quick that little fella is.

Yes, I think Sky has a bit of a dilemma here - does it give its customers what they want and risk people reducing their spend with it or does it sit by and watch people buy Firesticks and Apple TVs and subscribe to Netflix and Amazon anyway? The middle road of offering access to those subscribers who take Sky Cinema looks a bit mean. If such users downgraded, then Sky would look a bit mean of it stopped them accessing Amazon and Netflix. Will be interested to see how it plays out.
In terms of significance, it's more significant than VM getting Fox News but less significant than the new V6 box being launched.

They may test the water at some point on the Now TV box , allow users to add Netflix and Amazon services and see how it impacts on subscribers numbers and spend.

There are still an awful lot of people who don't have a Smart TV or a streaming box, UC. While I accept that this does nothing for you and me, there will be many viewers who think this is really good. Having it all on one box is particularly useful, provided it is fast. The V6 promises this.

A good move by Virgin, I'd say.

I think they're more likely to do it with Sky than Now TV. Now TV users with monthly passes seeking a cost-effective TV solution are less "sticky" than Sky TV customers.

Yes, but from what we hear, that objection will be toast when the V6 comes out.

Virgin will be the only comprehensive provider of TV channels and streaming services, all in one box. That'a pretty good USP for most, I would suspect.

Techies aside, most people can't be doing with loads of boxes, streaming sticks, etc. This is an ideal solution for minimalists!

If you have a Netflix or Amazon subscription, let's be honest, these people are also going to have Smart TVs, Games Consoles and the like...

But, forget about that and thinking ahead, having these apps on the Tivo/V6 could entice those without subscriptions to sign up because of the convenience. Will be a good move by both parties.

The thing is, people will subscribe to the services they want, regardless as to whether they are on the one box. I get Netflix, Amazon and Now TV, but I still have the full TV package with Virgin (except Sky Sports and other premium channels that I don't ever watch anyway).

By denying their subscribers the right to choose, they are attracting new and existing audiences to Virgin's service. So be it. They'll learn.

Never been throttled by BT always averaging around about 74mbs at all times also get 19mbs upload too, vms upload was pathetic.
Don't know about talktalk but SSE on the otherhand were far worse than vm for throttling even ofcom got involved in my case so SSE had to release me from the contract, the lesson there was cheaper isn't always better.
But i would never trust VM again.

Optical should be fine with most newer TVs, but many older TVs don't pass 5.1 sound via optical for attached devices.

For people, like me, who connect many devices directly to the AV amp, a Harmony remote control, using 'Activities', makes switching devices very quick and simple.

its a decent piece of news but in my mums boxroom i have my tv, tivo and a ps4 box plugged in next to my computer. it really wont change anything for me as tivo is so slow to play things and even with the new tivo box id imagine my ps4 will still be the quicker solution...

now if they want to explain all these price rises by saying theyve done a deal with amazon for it to be included in monthly subscriptions....then im a cheeky and happy little sailor!

I guess Sky is now trying to promote its own Now TV DTT/on-demand offering.

I think Youview itself is lowly dying out unless BT go through and buy yhe platform outright which has been suggested but other than that i think Youviews days are numbered.
Which makes me wonder more if the rumours are true that BT are testing a new box, maybe they're going to move away from Youview in the future.

Bay TV Swansea and Amazon tests has started on Virgin Media UK - at time of posting only testing with the names appearing.

Still no update on Fox News Channel - still not testing with Video.

All the Do Not Orders has now been lifted.
