I assume its because the owners of the channel want different deals for TV, PCs and mobile devices

Most channel owners are guilty of having different deals depending on where their channel will be viewed frustrating the hell out of their viewers

You'd like to think they would sort out the rights for MRS at the same time as TVA but this is Virginmedia we are talking about!

Sounds good, MB! But I spoke to a Sky worker the other week and they are two years into a five-year exclusive deal with HBO and they said Sky Atlantic will never launch on a competitor's EPG. How selfish is that?!. Sounds like Sky's USP! But Virgin don't have one, but hey-ho! Let's enjoy the rest of the Sky channels that they hopefully offer us such as Pick TV +1, Sky1 +1 AND TWO NEW HD CHANNELS!!! Yay!

We are unlikely to see Sky Atlantic on Virgin Media until Sky tell the rights to Sky Atlantic to other Networks (BT Vision, UPC Ireland and others.)

Maybe we will see MTV moving when Virgin re-sign with them (Look what happened with Universal and Syfy +1)

-Virgin Media signs deal with Viacom in August 2010.
-Sky did move MTV in February 2011.
-The Following Channels are owned by Viacom but is not on Virgin Media.

MTV CLASSIC
MTV HD
MTV LIVE
MTV MUSIC
MTV +1
Nickelodeon HD
Nick Jr. +1
Comedy Central Extra +1

Have just read that BT may not allow BT Sports onto VM and will only do so if it makes "commercial sense to do so." Therefore it's very possible that BT Sports will not be coming soon to VM.

:D Good point, the selection available on ipad is pretty poor though. Would like to see Virgin step up their efforts with this. Selection is great on web version, but my laptop isn't great, viewing on ipad is excellent. Would actually rather Virgin made all channels on Tv Anywhere available to ipad users rather than get Atlantic.

So do you not watch any channel unless it is in HD?

Presumably you didn't watch any TV before HD was broadcast?

Most of us want the HD version of any channel, but to say you won't watch a show because it is not in HD just sounds barmy to me.

We have had this question asked many times before and the answer as always is we didn't have 50 inch + sets years ago... My set up at home has cost me a few grand, if I can't watch game of thrones for example in hd quality with 5.1 sound from my pay tv provider then I will source it from somewhere else, then no one wins, not sky or vm.

But you can source it from a pay TV provider, just not the one you choose to go with. You can't use the fact that it's not available on Virgin to justify sourcing it by illegal means.

This is the problem with exclusive deals for TV content, people will obtain programmes illegally if it is not available to them the way they want it to be. Also I imagine people that can get it legally also watch it illegally so that they get it the same time as America. Customers should not have to go to a certain provider to get access to one or two channels that they want.

No offence but that's just MB speculating again over possible deals and what channels might come of it.
Similar to the tweet above saying VM are confirmed in talks with Sky over SA. No point getting your hopes up, VM have been saying that since SA launched.

Some people seem to take what's said on here as gospel, until VM confirm anything then it's pure speculation, as insiders have proved in the past with giving false info/hopes.

People who buy 50 inch TVs should be aware that SD pictures may not look as good on such a big screen. And they are obviously aware that not all TV channels are broadcast in HD. So surely they factor these things into the decision to buy such a big screen?

Given that the percentage of VM customers with 50inch TVs is probably quite small, it would be wrong of VM to stop aquiring SD only content just because a samall percentage of their subscribers turn their noses up at SD quality pictures.

I want as much HD as possible, but I'm sorry, I do find it crazy that people would not view content that they really want to watch just because it is in SD.

That's the option to get around your problem. The trouble is, blueray releases/legit download services are only available several months after the show has aired.

Agreed, it's about time that the exclusive deals system that the studios love, was ended. But sadly, I can't see that happening anytime soon.

Also I imagine people that can get it legally also watch it illegally so that they get it the same time as America. Customers should not have to go to a certain provider to get access to one or two channels that they want.

The specific content in question is available for a price from Blinkbox.

In my view, the price is too high and it is only available several months after broadcast.

The whole content provision buisness needs a shake up. Internet access has changed the way people view content. Ideally, we could subscribe to the broadcasters content directly or using sevices such as Hulu Plus and HBO GO. But there are so many vested monetry interests tied up in exclusive regional content deals that means the studios are reluctant to change.

It took a while for the music industry to catch on and make legal downloads available, but it seem that the video side hasn't learnt anything form that. Thus piracy is prevelant, partly because people don't have internet based access to legal downloads.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

My view is this - firstly, access to tele visual content is not a human right. People have lived for thousands of years without it. Secondly, in the same way that troubadours, minstrels, jesters, comics, authors etc have filled those thousands of years, entertainment, and the provision of it is a business and people enter business to make money. You might not like it, you might not like how they run their business, but the fact remains that, for example, hbo have spent money on Game of Thrones, and they have done so to make money. It is their property to do just that with. Just because you want to access that entertainment but have chosen to give your money to a company that doesn't offer it doesn't give you the right to obtain it illegally. Just because you can't wait for it to become available on other platforms doesn't give you the right to obtain it illegally. And just because you have a moral objection to the way they run their business doesn't give you a right to obtain it illegally either.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

But Andy_m - it's not about rights to view illegally, it's about ability. Where there is a will, there is a way. Studios don't need to bend over backwards to please viewers, but they should want to make their products available as widespread as possible and gain the full potential revenue.

How is it that for a measley £10 per month to Spotify I can listen to the latest releases, as well as a huge back catalogue of music? The video industry, TV or movies, needs to adopt this policy at some point. Live broadcast will diminish into a few channels for specific programming that needs to be live, everything else should be available for a fixed rental fee. Who, how, when - who knows, but it will have to happen.

Does it bother you that some people will obtain it through different means?

bamav 19-03-2013 17:49

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.

If you mean me, Max Max, then no it doesn't. The world is full of people who will always get the same things without paying for them, whether it be digital media, electrical goods, clothes. Doesn't change how I would like to obtain them. The bigger issue of organised crime, now that's a different matter.

To get back on track, if the cost of digital media is more in line with what the majority of honest people would pay, then more people would pay and not rely on piracy, etc. this has been proven time and time again. Piracy should never be used as an excuse to charge honest people more money.

Who has suggested that it's right to obtain things illegally? I certainly haven't.

Saying that many people do obtain things illegally, partly because of exclusive contract deals is a different thing completely. But it is a fact.

The record companies eventually learned that enabling legal, subscription based streaming was the way to go. Sadly, the greedy film/TV content providers have still to learn that lesson.

Very true.

Many of the means are there such as HULU Plus and HBO GO, but are restricted to US residents. The reason is that the studios want to do lucrative deals with non US service providers, who often delay broadcast for months after the US airing. As an example, take the mess channel 5 made of Person Of Interest; they are coming to the end of season 1, whilst the US are coming to the end of season 2.

Whether it's right or wrong, the internet has shrunk the world and people want access to TV shows at the same time. For proof, look at this cable forum thread and note how many discussions on TV shows are around the 'US Timeline'.

HBO Go is like Sky Go, you need a cable/satellite subscription to use it. PoI is most likely delayed because they've went for the cheaper rights like NCIS which they air a year after FOX, it just so happens no-one (yet) has picked up the main rights. That or their scheduling is pants.

Looks as if you're correct re HBO. I was under the impression that US residents could sign up for a web version. Funnily enough, that does illustrate my point though. I believe that Game of Thrones was the most illegally downloaded TV show. If HBO provided a legitimate web subscription service, that may not have been the case?

With regard to POI, channel 5 stopped after S1E10 for around 3 months. There was no reason to, as all of Season 1 had already been shown in the US. So channel 5 just treated it badly

BTW, one good thing that Sky instigated was showing US drama very close to the US air date. Some other channels have followed their lead but Sky still show some shows quite a bit later, Nikita being an example; I watched the last few episodes of season 2 on US Netflix before Sky had shown the same episodes.

A great deal from virgin

Well spotted by Cable Forums Bogof.

Half price for 1 year! Same deal I have just now with SKY.

Could Virgin and SKY be trying to lock people down on great deals before BT launches their new TV packages in the summer?

Maybe call retentions and tell them you've got a 50% friends and family code for SKY however if they could match their own deal for new customers you'd happily sign a new 18 month deal.

I I was out of contract with SKY, I'd well join Virgin again on that deal. Not only are you getting half price, your getting £75 off too! If you take VIP, your first month will be free.

I've read with interest over the past few months about people thoughts about sky withholding channels eg sky Atlantic surely now the take up of both sky and virgin of new customers are at saturation point and apart from the few numbers that move between it would now make commercial sense for sky to make channels available to other outlets especially for advertisement revenue

When there was a carriage dispute over the Sky Basics a few years back the loss of the VM audience hit Sky1's advertisers pretty hard and they were the main instigators of getting Sky back to the table to thrash out a deal. With Sky Atlantic the audiences are pretty small anyway (aside from a few shows like Game of Thrones) so the advertisers probably aren't as vocal.
Whether or not it significantly attracts new customers now I would doubt, but it may prevent some churn of customers leaving for VM or BT Vision.

The difference was that when sky1 etc left Virgin Media the advertisers had already made the deal to include Virgin Media's customers in the target figures. With Sky Atlantic we have never had it, so advertising revenue would not have come into it.

VM like to make a noise about something that won't happen or will happen 2 years down the line, probably as a customer retention trick again.

Anyone with common sense knows that VM will not be getting Sky Atlantic any time soon, especially before 2014.

So don't be fooled in to staying with Virgin Media just in case or in the hope they get Sky Atlantic soon. #NotHappening

Can't dispute the simple truths in my post so going for a personal attack diversion? ;)

Predictable and sad!

There are truths and untruths and then there are some people who are obsessed and consistently hellbent on knocking Virgin Media at every turn and it seems you qualify for that one.:)

Yes there has been plenty that has arrived lately and that can only be good for us all as competition hots up in the marketplace.

I don't listen to GD but based off a list of their songs I'd guess Minority.

EDIT: or Waiting.

I will refrain from posting while I hang my head in shame, more things will probably whoosh over it in the meantime.

Very true. SKY are not looking for advertising revenue. The below statement suggests SKY see more value in keeping the likes of SKY Atlantic exclusive rather than wholesale it to Virgin and BT.

http://cadm.sky.com/pisa/

"A basic thing to know about Sky is that the majority of our revenue comes from subscription not advertising, which means we don’t need people to watch every minute of every day - but what we do need shows that prompt people to subscribe and keep them with us once they’ve subscribed. So noisy shows that we can promote heavily that people will obsess about."

Why would you have a HD tv and only want stations in SD, also Atlantic has many new series. Not bothered about that Game of Thrones right enough, not interested in pixies or elfs and stuff (is that what that shows about?). There is barely any channel now that doesn't repeat stuff. Not moaning, just saying.
