We don't know yet and may never know. The only insight I've heard since the rights were awarded is that BT and Sky got one package each in the first round per Claire Enders of Enders Analysis. See her interesting interview here.
Advertising-funded games shown on the likes of ITV and Eurosport were ruled out as advertising does not even nearly cover the costs of multi-million £ games. This left the wild card of state-backed beIN but even this company has its limits.

Whack it on other packages and increase Sky Sports modestly. None of this increasing Sky Sports by £6pm from 2016 that so many on here predicted but more a slowly-but-surely approach levied across all services that will get the same revenue but will try and not lose customers.

Well their hope is that by doing this customers won't notice any price rises but in 2015 the customer is getting increasingly price savvy and will shop round if the price rises are not to their liking and for some it won't be to their liking but how many remains open to question.

With Openreach charging telecoms companies about £8pm for line rental and the likes of Sky charging £15pm-£16pm for line rental, everyone is paying for sports even if they don't have pay TV.

Fair point, it's a very hefty wedge. My point is more that Sky Sports hasn't suddenly shot up by £6pm and the costs have been distributed across other products.

Agreed however HD is now more popular than ever just look how many Sky subscribers now take it , a Sky Sports fan with the family bundle is facing a £4 increase some 9 months after the last one with probably more to come at some point with the telecoms side.

I've had subscription TV for many years but now more than ever I'm thinking of ditching the lot , I maybe tempted with a decent discount at contract end but I'm no longer prepared to pay anywhere near full whack.

Re: General Sky TV Discussion

That Daily Mail article has some interesting observations:
Quote:

Daily Mail Normally, Sky would announce any price rise in September, however making the announcement then would have coincided with its loss of the TV rights for the Champions League to BT. It would have been obvious to viewers that they were being asked to pay more for less.

The inflation-busting increases will come into effect on June 1 and coincide with the middle of the latest series of Game of Thrones. Fans will effectively have to agree to the higher subscription.

Sky offered a bizarre explanation for the timing of the announcement, claiming it was necessary to comply with regulations imposed by the Advertising Standards Authority. In fact, the ASA has absolutely no role in the timing of such announcements.

French giant Vivendi 'considers reach for Sky'

Quote:

The French media conglomerate Vivendi is looking at a possible acquisition of pay-TV group Sky, as one of several options to expand the reach of its own TV group Canal Plus, three sources familiar with the matter said.

Vivendi has turned its attention to Sky after reviewing smaller pay-TV targets in Turkey and other fast-growing markets in Europe, one of the sources said.

Sky has a market value of £17.6bn ($26bn) but could cost Vivendi as much as £28bn including debt, the sources said.

Do you mean as in buy to watch on your mobile or tablet?

If they decide to move in that direction, I hope they have the movies in 1080p like the big boys. 720p just won't cut it when they're competing directly with iTunes etc.

I'm sure all that will have been factored in , many people do nothing and simply accept the rise whilst others ring to cancel and end up staying with a retention deal. I'm sure Sky and VM study data and have an idea of how far they can increase things.

I think most people agree, but sport has them tied to a pay TV service, as that is the only realistic way to get it; charges for sport via Now TV are even more exorbitant than via a Sky or VM pay TV subscription.

If Sky made the Now TV charges for sport closer to the prices via a satellite subscription, then more people would ditch pay TV. Which is exactly why they won't.

I know that you like sport, so kudos to you for taking a stand and telling Sky what to do with their price rises.

To be honest I've always done it , I ring and cancel to say I'm not prepared to pay the current high prices however in the past I've always got some good discounts to stay. I'll do exactly the same this time if the offer is good enough I'll gladly stay.

You aren't mistaken , I am quitting at the new inflated prices however many people have said after giving notice they've been offered 50% off or better for the next 12 months that would then become a price I'm happy to pay. If no call comes my way then I guess I will be pay TV free.:D

I have noticed that people who call 31 days before the end of their 50%+ discount tend not to get another but if you call closer to the end of the discount or after it has ended then you will likely get another 25%, 35% or 50% discount to continue with Sky. If you call early (31 days before offer ends) then you will just get standard 10% discount offered.

The only issue I have with Sky's on demand is that you can't download an entire season of ,say , The Blacklist ,in one go you have to download each episode separately ,a bit of a pain but otherwise I agree the on demand is excellent

When I was with Sky you could queue them up so I guess it`s still the same.

Yep, that's all that can be done ,however 22 episodes is a bit of a faf ,not to mention the 22 onscreen popups telling me a download is available to view

Trust me when I say this has been requested many times , I'm pretty sure you'll see this kind of functionality implemented at some stage , its certainly been researched by Sky.

The last update a couple of weeks ago included a 'delete all' option for box sets so I guess a 'download all' option can't be far away.

You can just annoying if your downloading a box set of four seasons containing 10+ episodes each, just a big oversight in my opinion.

The Telegraph article says this but the Foxtel box uses Pace hardware and software. http://community.foxtel.com.au/t5/An...ALED/td-p/7103

I assume the Sky UK box would be developed by Sky in-house in Brentwood.

Apologies I deleted my post as I was trying to change link and thought I'd start again lol.

That UI looks very similar to the Liberty Global Horizon box.

I can't see anything in the article suggesting SKY are denying it, unless I'm not reading it correctly?

At the foot of the article, there's an additional paragraph:
Quote:

Stuff.tv UPDATE: Since publishing this story, we've been told by a source close to Sky that the company has no plans to announce any new products within the next few weeks. So maybe put those celebratory beers back on ice for a little while.

To be honest Andrew I'm still not convinced either way , something is on the horizon that's for sure however it may not arrive in the next few weeks. Sky always remain tight lipped about these launches.

Agreed, I think a 4K box will be launched later in the year. But not in the main holiday season. This "leak" won't do Sky any harm though.

That article makes no reference to the 'Watch from start' feature which is basically a shortcut to On Demand via the linear Sky Movies channels , it allows channel browsers to watch the movie being shown on the linear channel from the start via the green button prompt. I'm not a massive linear watcher however it works pretty well on the occasions I've used it.

It wasn't that long back people said Sky didn't need Sky Sports 5 :D

It currently has live sport on nearly every channel with red button active on three channels.
