I mean my official queries with VM tech support, I asked on the forums a week ago and heard nothing. in the last couple of weeks its dropped sharply in performance, and also whilst downloading "everything" becomes laggy as if my entire connection is deprioritised by some management system. Also note the latency reported well. C:\windows\system32>ping bbc.co.uk Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=594ms TTL=242 Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=519ms TTL=242 Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=505ms TTL=242 Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=384ms TTL=242 Ping statistics for 212.58.241.131: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 384ms, Maximum = 594ms, Average = 500ms usually when downloading before on VM it didnt affect latency unless saturated the connection but even then not to 500ms, now I am downloading at 1.5mbit second and latency has sky rocketed even tho the connection is only 5% utilised. ---------- Post added at 20:08 ---------- Previous post was at 20:06 ---------- Quote:

maybe now i dont know. when i tried a few months ago people in the CEOs office didnt give me info on utilisation but offered to put me through to Swansea who could offer more help. try tomorrow.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
based on my experience I either have very bad DS congestion since base latency is up not just jitter (which is what US congestion usually does) or some kind of traffic management system has kicked in as soon as I started downloading although I do clearly have US congestion as well on top of this based on my tbb graph.
My neighbor's wife said the internet is broken, cant get more detailed then that so still havent done any testing on his 100mbit connection. He has been out on call all week so need to wait for him to get back. ---------- Post added at 20:26 ---------- Previous post was at 20:20 ---------- I have noticed LE2 and LE4 have had queries the past week and both confirmed high utiilisation, I have PM'd mark the forum manager to ask for an explanation why I have been ignored. |

I am capping out at around 1.5mbit it doesnt even spike up. The issue I had 2 sundays ago started within minutes I started an iplayer stream as well. I am not convinced this is just congestion. |

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
That is very..erm..spiky? RB. Although, by comparison with mine, your minimum latency is flat. My connection was very slow this afternoon which was odd since there was nothing on TBB that was out of the ordinary (I am smiling as I type "ordinary") :D
|
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Quote:
It needs only one TBB ping out of hundreds to be high and you get the graph you've displayed. It's the average (blue) that matters. As regards what data you can get in modem mode, there isn't any data that you further need IMO. There's nothing in the SH that could be screwing up your experience. I didn't see anything about what was going wrong in terms of broadband performance. BTW, here's my graph (now upgraded from 50/5 to 100/5): http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...16-11-2012.png I was still getting 89 Mbps during the routing/peering wobbly (for that's what I think happened inside the VM system) at 22:00 |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
This discussion seems to have gone slightly off track. I am not a networking guru (you can ALL stop sniggering now qas).
My question is twofold: 1. Does this weird behaviour have a huge detrimental impact upon our connections? (With the obvious exception if lots of red stuff). 2. Why are VM not telling us why this is happening and, perhaps more importantly, why do they not fix it? It's clearly a problem yet no one can explain why it's going on (off?) or what they're doing to rectify this. http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...16-11-2012.png |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Jem
The "weird behaviour" according to my observations affects the upstream worse than the downstream. It makes gaming very difficult and web pages take a long time to load. As for VM's silence - they lay themselves open to speculation that they have not allocated sufficient peering bandwidth - when those peering points come under stress (whether through innocent load or by some sort of attack), you see these effects in TBB. That's not the only reason - if you see it and others don't then there's something going on in your network segment. hence the value of a thread like this. |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Bump aside, everything seemed to be OK here until around 8:30am when my SH lost connection. Hopefully this is a planned outage and not a fault (though the 'never-knowingly-helpful' status page just says that I might have difficulty connecting to the My Virginmedia page)

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Thank you Seph for your succinct and informative reply to my query. I was rather extracting the Michael :D. Nonetheless I do appreciate you taking the time to reply. It just irritates me when the service doesn't work as it's supposed to, and when you ring for assistance you are told that there isn't a problem. Both BB and TV went down last month simultaneously. Called CS (in India) to be informed that there is no fault. No internet connection and light flashing on Tivo indicating no BB connection. Still they lie :(

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
Since the outage a couple of days ago my connection has been very poor, with long delays before website appear, fluctuating download speeds and the ever-present YouTube buffeting.
Here's my latest graph. Prior to the outage I never saw any spikes, or packetloss, like those shown ( other than the infamous bump). http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...18-11-2012.png |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
I just had a spike that went all green (high base latency), speed went down to atrocious levels. sky go buffered every 5 seconds.
luckily it subsided and stream ok again., but clearly my VM connection is on its last legs and I am now thinking of going to sky early before FTTC, temporarily on ADSL on the basis they will migrate me when FTTC available. |
Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)
check last few hours of my live graph.
Its behaving like there is a low throughput cap thats been hit. The bandwidth used was sky go. I dropped it to low quality the last hour as it started buffering again after my last post. I now stopped the stream and latency dropped again. Previously STM had no affect on latency, also that normally congestion doesnt care if the line is idle or not, so this is different. https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2012/11/27.png |
