I agree. Things are repeated so frequently that it would have to be a rare set of events that occurred to make it essential that you had to view all of them in a short space of time.

Actually, for me this is a daily / nightly occurrence as most of my favourite programmes are concentrated into the same two hour period in the afternoon and evening. During the day I value +1s for comedy and documentary channels and at night it's a matter of channel hopping between Five USA, Hallmark/+1, Living/+1/+2 (soon to be HD). Worse still, my other half has decided she wants to watch Monkey Business on Animal Planet/+1 so this has to be factored into the mix. Luckily Hallmark repeat some of the prime-time programmes a couple of hours later or on Friday.

I don't have a V+ Box PVR yet and have given up taping on the VCR/DVD unless it's a keeper (movie or interesting documentary). At least that way I have to discipline myself a bit :( and make some hard descisions . I find if I record an episode of a programme, I'm unlikely to watch it same day and then it just sits around for too long.

Yes, many of the channels will eventually repeat a series but there are some episodes of CSI, Criminal Minds, Cold Case, The Mentalist, Without a Trace etc. that I repeatedly miss. I do have a life outside of my living room but it has been curtailed somewhat in recent years due to health problems, hence the heavy TV use.

The On Demand services are great but a bit random in what they show (e.g. partial series) and limited in the channels they cover. The Warner stuff is good and the content from other channels will increase.

Bear in mind that there are far more factors involved in launching a channel than just availability of bandwidth. I'm sure if VM had great content waiting in the wings they would drop some +1/+2 channels to accommodate it. For example, I imagine they would replace one Discovery+1 channel with another Discovery channel if it was available to them.

Next year with anaolgue gone and IPTV on the way, they'll be able to accommodate lots of new channels, HD and +1s so we'll have to find something else to moan about.

Where's my 3D TV?
When are we getting 'feel around sound'?
Why can't I control the ball in the footie with my Wii?

So I say :tu: to +1s, +1.5s and +2s. (I think someone already made the plus fours joke.)

On my Virgin Media bill I have a charge of £10 for ESPN America until 11th Sept
This won't be taken out till 17th Aug.So if ESPN America closes I should get a revised bill and a discount from 3erd Aug - 17th Aug as well shouldn't I ? :erm:

I apologise.

No you are right to be frustrated. I'm sure we all are. Over the past few weeks in particular there have been a very large number of repeat questions, many of them in close proximity to the answer!

May I suggest ...

Before posting a question:-

Read post number one, Media Boy's big listing, in it's entirety or use your browser find facility to look for your topic of interest.
Get up a half an hour earlier and read all the posts since you last checked in.
Use the Thread Search facility to look for your topic of interest.

When answering a repeat question, rather than repeating the answer:-

Insert a link to post number one.
Insert a link to the answer.
Insert a link to my suggestions.

Okay. It's a bit more time-consuming and you are doing the searching on behalf of the question-poster but at least you won't run the risk of posting a partial or ambiguous answer that will generate even more questions.

Just a thought or two.

So basically wrong time for this. I don't fancy having to have 3d glasses all over the show. For me anyway 3d is for going out to not an everyday thing

 Ah you said that about colour in the 70s! You said that the news was more convincing in monochrome and that Andy Pandy's stripes were better defined in the contrast of black and white.

Now look at ya! All wide-screened and HDed up with your fancy surround sound. Another couple of years and you'll be walking down the High Street with your Virtual Reality goggles on! Actually, knowing you, you'll be virtually walking down the virtual High Street from the comfort of your armchair.

:gpoint:
I agree with you that it's too soon for 3D with many people still getting used to the idea of wide-screen and digital TV (in non-woodgrain effect cabinets). Many will be waiting a lot longer before considering HD.
:gpoint:
There is a small minority that might fork out their hard-earned on 3D TV but in the current economic climate it's hardly a good time for the public or the broadcasters to be investing in expensive niche technology.

The Sky equivalent of a concept car perhaps.

I expect VM are using frequencies they've never used before (for digital, anyway) and with the best will in the world they can't make sure that they're receivable, without changes, at the millions of ends of many thousands of miles of cable.

I'd say call VM - it could be a simple fix like boosting your power.

hth,
Sam

Go into Settings / Technical Stuff / Page 2.

You want SNR to be high (>30dB), AGC to be low (<80%), Pre RS Errors to be 0 (a small number are correctable), Post RS Errors to be 0 (anything else will cause pixies and chirps).

I base these figures on my setup. Your experience may differ.

The values will vary greatly from one channel to another. I typically find the documentary channels in the 200 range most prone to problems. They are ususally borderline with SNR at 28dB to 29dB and AGC at 90% to 100% with some occasional Pre/Post RS Errors. Nat. Geo. HD is likely to be in a bad frequency range requiring a lot of bandwidth and so prone to errors.

Check your readings on channel 232 then check all your connections on the wall socket, any splitters and your STB then take the readings again and post both sets here please.

I have more to say on the quirks of this problem but I'll post that later.

Hi,

Many of my channels are also pixelated including 2 of the new HD channels FX and mutvHD. Are these values different for each channel?

On SNR it says 24.0dB, 32.0dB, 29.0dB

Do all these have to be above 30, or just one?

AGC says -16dBmV, -11dBmV, -13dBmV I have no idea how these figures relate to a percentage value.

Pre RS errors says 0,0, 11 per 0.5s

Post RS Errors says 0,0,0 per 0.5s

So anything wrong with these figures? Probably give Virgin a ring.

OK I have just uploaded the files to rapidshare.

The listing for the Channel4 HD stuff is http://rapidshare.com/files/262138041/Channel_4_HD.pdf

The listing for all High Definition programmes on the Virgin platform is http://rapidshare.com/files/262139109/all_virgin_hd.pdf

These listings are ONLY the programmes being shown in High Definition through to 14th August (not every programme).

I have a suspicion that they can only be downloaded a total of 10 times - so if you try and cant get it just let me know and I will redo the file.

C4 HD 30th July - 14th Aug
BBC HD 30th July - 15th Aug
National Geographic HD 30th July - 1st Oct

You have a slightly different display to me so I'm guessing you have a different STB. I have a Pace Di400-N V Box STB. What's yours?

I'm not exactly sure what figures you're quoting. Can you elaborate? Are they the three sets of figures for the three new HD channels? Maybe you can list BBC HD and an SD channel (e.g. BBC One) as well for comparison.

The figures shown apply to the channel you are currently watching. Each channel will differ as they come down the co-ax on different frequencies and are subject to different levels of interference and attenuation.

An SNR of 32.0dB is good, 24.0dB is very bad. The AGC value of -11dBmv sounds good and -16dBmV sounds bad. The Pre RS Error value of 11 is a relatively small (but not perfect) number of correctable errors and, at the time of the snapshot, there were no unrecoverable Post RS Errors so, in theory, you should not be having any pixellation. However, it is a snapshot and you have to go out of Settings and back in again to refresh periodically.

Have you checked and tightened all of those connectors?

One time I discovered a break in the centre core of a short patch cable from my broadband splitter to the STB. Most channels were fine 'jumping' the gap in the cable through capacitive coupling. Others were very badly affected to the point of generating an error screen rather than just showing a pixellated picture. When I wiggled the cable it improved things so I checked it with a meter and found a break about a third of the way along.

Some time later I was still having intermittent problems with selected channels due to poor signal levels so VM replaced the amplifier in the green box on the street corner.

I have noticed that hot weather often coincides with this kind of problem and, as my STB is kept quite cool, I think it might be the green box on the street corner but check your STB isn't overheated.

I still get occasional problems early in the morning with Discovery, History etc. but I haven't reported it again yet as it's not a major issue.

Finally, if I am getting pixellation I sometimes lift the front of the STB up a couple of centimetres and drop it gently. I said gently! This usually works and indicates a possible loose connection or solder joint inside the box. The RF cable also gets a giggle from this operation but I'm fairly sure that the cable and it's connectors are in good shape. I've only had this box about nine months as my original older model Pace box failed after many years of faithful service.

Apologies for the lenghty post but as more channels are added, especially HD channels, I envisage more pixellation problems and 1202 errors 'Coming Soon to Virgin TV'.

Doh! Of course Andrew, one for each channel (tuner) that you can watch or record from. Thanks!

OK Ian. You can save time by setting the three tuners to three of the new HD channels and taking the readings as before. I don't know if it's possible to do that without setting up a couple of recordings though.

I really must order a V+ Box, although I've seen on the VM website that they don't do them as a QuickStart install, so you have to pay the installation fee, tidy up and vacuum the living room and attend to personal hygene before the engineer arrives. Sounds like a lot of trouble and expense. :(

If you're buying one JUST for this new handful of channels, I'd say no, but an HDTV should be used for many more things.

Do you have an Xbox 360 or a PS3? Or an Apple TV? And of course a blu-ray player will transform how you appreciate movies. Watching a good blu-ray in full 1080p with lossless audio coming through your 5.1 or 7.1 AV amp is astounding stuff.

There already is a search feature on the V+.... It just takes (literally) tens of minutes to find anything, rendering it completely pointless.

Indeed. The feature should never have been included! I would imagine that the new guide features will be based around the return path - but let's hope it's not as slow as the iPlayer app...

If you read the website, it clearly states that ESPN America will stay on Sky as well. And no American sports were going to be broadcast in HD anyway, so no need for them to be shown on ESPN HD.

I would bet HNIC will be in HD. They won't have anything else in HD at night except US sports and UFC.
ESPN America was looking to make a HD channel very soon anyway and there old statement on their site had US Sports in HD

He doesn't mean the channels will launch at the weekend just that the channels will launch onto the EPG. This gives a little prewarning to customers to inform them of the channel launches before the channels go live on Monday. Or, something like that...:)

OK thanks. Seems a bit of a shame to me when channels do this. Take 4HD as an example. Surely with content from Ch4, E4, More4 and Film4 they could have a channel that was full time HD? Anyway, don't want to moan - still ecstatic after this week! :)

New rule number ONE (well maybe number TWO). Never ask for an opinion here. You'll get several and start an argument, er I mean spirited discussion. ;)

It's a very subjective question. The four new HD channels, plus the existing BBC HD, plus ESPN HD starting on Monday, cover quite a variety of tastes and should please quite a few existing HD TV owners and entice others to join the fray. Bear in mind that there is also a considerable amount of On Demand HD content available on Virgin Media too.

You decide. Look at what's available in terms of linear HD channels and the On Demand TV and Movies in HD. Peruse the schedules for the linear channels and see if your fave prog. is available and a must have in HD for you.

More HD channels are coming before the end of the year. So if you can get a reasonable deal on a HD TV and V+ Box now then do it and have a variety of HD to watch after Christmas lunch. Alternatively, get the V+ Box this side of Christmas, to avoid the rush, and see what HD TV deals appear in the sales. You can use the PVR facility of the V+ Box to record HD programmes and then watch them in the New Year when you have your discounted HD TV.

Maybe it is a case of launching a few channels first to make sure that everything is technically working OK? Seemed strange too that they announced C4HD with no launch date, and then launched it 2 days later.

But I was telling everyone that Channel 4 HD was testing days before Virgin told you it was coming.

I think it's a technically sound strategy. It's quite a major step installing these bandwidth hogging channels.

Clearly the test results were such that they had the confidence to add C4HD without any negative impact... and they still have ESPN HD to add

I would imagine there will now be a period of monitoring before further additions are made.

You can imagine the negative headlines if all the HD channels were added at once and the whole network went belly up.

As it is there were a few teething problems, including my own area, but on the whole well done VM.

Yes, I just mean it is odd that VM announced that CH4HD was officialy coming soon with no launch date in the press release - only to launch the channel days later.

It has been rumoured that they are after the FA Cup rights previously held by Setanta. Nothing concrete.

ITV1* have got the rights to all the England that Setanta Sports has.

*Not in STV areas.

Has there been any mention of the Europe League rights? Setanta was going to show it for the first time next season, but not heard of anybody picking the rights up.

No news.

Note: Setanta Sports was only part of the deal for the UK Rights.

ITV and Five also got the rights to games.

This is the strange way that VM work, it seems that the left arm doesn't know what the other arm is doing, which is typical of them.

And here was me thinking i was going to go a whole day without you having a dig at VM
