Just as a matter of interest, I was asked this question today and wasn't sure of the answer, how will this world cup be decided if it is all square after 90 mins.
Is it extra time then penalties, or extra time then the golden goal ?

I have tried to find the answer but to no avail.

I seem to remember hearing that the golden goal was not going to play a part this time around, wasn't that how France won it last time ?

TheDaddy 13-05-2006 02:39

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

I think you are right, no golden moments this time around, it's the dreaded penalty shoot out, I wonder if England will bother practising them this time.

Pretty exciting cup final.

An excellent game for the neutrals, TBH I thought West Ham just shaded it on the balance of normal play, cracking goals from Gerrard though.

That is how I saw it as well :tu:

A good advert for football, all round, the spirit in which the game was played was excellent & the referee played his part well, too.

Both Teams played an outstanding game i thought. As a Londoner, i wanted West Ham to win, But Probably the best F.A Cup Final i can ever remember.!
Congratulations to all who took part! :tu: :)
Stupid rule with the penalties though, should have been the Golden Goal rule applied.!

I was at Cardiff yesterday in the stadium. Was utterly fantastic. the whole 2 hours and 1/2 went by like it was nothing. To be honest, West Ham were utterly fantastic. And we had a right go at Liverpool cos they were nothing short of shambolic in the first half.. (now where did that happen before ? ;) ) However Gerrard pulled us back into with some cracking goals.

Only downpoint of Cardiff was the bloody M4!!! took 1 hour to do 5 miles!!

very good game should raise profile of the fa cup a bit. I think west ham were hard done by but they paid by price when gerrard started limping and they stopped man marking him.

well ballack has been signed for chelsea. . United better put all stops out to get diarra. ive seen him play some for lyon over years and he is a rock, he is far more important player for lyon than essien ever was and is worth the money utd should pay.

i feel he is part of whats missing but isnt the last piece i still feel we lack a crosser of the ball.

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing him at United, I thought he was the one that made the Hammers tick last weekend :tu:
Add Carrick or Riquelme to the midfield list and we have it covered, all we need then is a forward for the outgoing Nistelrooy

With the best will in the world Nigel is no Michael Ballack is he, you don't need potential you need the finished article and quick, otherwise it may not be just Chelsea you are chasing next season.

He's either the perfect examplen of agent's being **** of the earth, or the epitome of the greed of the modern player

In the way that you don't want a player who doesn't want to play for you.

It's all claims and counter-claims. Utd reached a deal with the player and the club, whereas Chelsea say they already had a deal with the player's agents. Chelsea also claim to have been instrumental in Obi's move to Europe. Utd have also filed a complaint that Chelsea and Obi's agent, John ****tu, made illegal payments to Obi's family. ****tu is hardly a patron of virtue as he was caught money laundering recently.

as for Mikel i can't see him getting a game at Chelsea at all now they have Ballack, Lampard, Makele, Duff, Robben etc

United seems to be the best place for him but looks like the agent as got involved and turned the players head.. am sure he just wants Mikel to go to Chelsea as he will get a higher fee for himself there

I would say that barca mainly won due to very bad reffing....so yeah I can totally agree with Henry.

okay the red card for Lehman was justified but all the other cards for the arsenal players not...and not once was van Bommel booked for his fouls.

The only arsenal card not justified was Henrys. I've no idea what planet your on if you think Eboue's "tackle" wasn't a yellow.

Played better in what way?

For 60 odd minutes your tatics consisted of booting the ball as far up field as possible.

Nope the ref didn't help Arsenal at all, he didn't disallow a valid goal by not paying advantage, and he didn't give Arsenal a free kick for an outrageous dive.

How many football teams do always take 100% responiblity. I have heard Man United and Liverpool do the same. Both who I would suppot in Champions league final (or did in the case of liverpool)

I did mention the ref was crap but also we should have took our chances.

I accept we lost, and we missed chances. Just stop using the comments of upset team members who have lost a champions league final to bash arsenal again.

gazzae 17-05-2006 23:48

Re: [Merged] The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Its not bashing, its a fact that Arsenal do not accept defeat gracefully. Sure other teams don't like losing but at least they can loose gracefully (not always of course). If you can give me an example of Arsenal losing gracefully and not blaming someone else then I will stand corrected.

What modern football team loses gracefully ?

Certainly not Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or a few others that spring to mind - it's always someone elses fault (usually the ref !).

No. Your just taking the words up upset players moment after losing one of the biggest games of their careers to bash arsenal again. Any many people act relationally in such a stituation

I can think of two occasions of the top of my head for Fergie.

Champions league against Porto where a valid goal was disallowed knocking Utd out Fergie didn't blame the linesman, I believe his quote was "its shocking but thats football."

Carling Cup semi final against Chelsea, despite arguments with Jose during both legs and Jose saying Utd were diving etc, fergie invited him into his office after the second leg to share a bottle of wine.

If thats not losing gracefully I don't know what is.

Ljungberg seemed quite realistic about it.

I had forgotton the Leeds one, thats when their wonderful supporters  trashed the stadium, I suppose it makes a change from their team wrecking the dressing rooms, I do hope that Watford sort them out next week.

Thats daft, 2 moments don't define a match. How did Henry get a yellow card when he was the one being kicked?

How did Oleguer get a yellow when he won the ball?

The ref was bad, but he was equally bad.

Chelsea, you win the title. Liverpool, you go home with the FA Cup.

Man United, you leave with the League Cup.

Arsenal, you leave with nothing :D

Because he commit a foul at the same time. Henry won the ball without touching the player, got kicked, and got a yellow.

No he didn't, he won the ball first. ALso if you check my other posts I said Henry did not deserve his yellow.

No he didn't, and i never said you thought he deserved it, i was just pointing out that 2 moments don't define a match. Barcelona commit more fouls that wern't blown up for, anyone could see that, hence everybody said the same thing.

I'm not an Arsenal supporter, i live miles away from there, but someone as a supporter of English sides is getting hacked off with foriegn refs who don't know the game of football. Apparently diving is ok and not cheating. Arsenal dived once (blatantly), i saw 10 Barcelona players dive tonight. If you are from Spain or Italy diving is OK, it's a part of football. I think Henry is right tonight, he needs to learn to dive more.

Bah, anyway, i'm off to bed, roll on the World Cup, however i fully expect us to have more fouls given against us than most other teams.

He's right. Fergie would swap the league cup for a place in the champions league final every time.

Perhaps. But the Old Trafford trophy cabinet will have a new addition this season.

Arsenal's? Nope.

Not sure that matters really, look at the bank balances. Fergie would rather have Arsenals season.

And lose out on automatic entry in the Champions League? You sure about that?

Positive.

Fergie would love the money Arsenal have generated from this run to spend on players. I think thats the bummer point from Fergie's side. I hope for Fergie they will dig deap, cos it would be nice for them to get a couple of centre mids, i think a couple of decent ones and Man U can really challenge Chelsea again (some may laugh). I love the transfer chat that ensues regardless.

Don't forget, if Abramovich hadn't bailed Chelsea out, we'd have won the title this year.

No way. We finished higher than Arsenal, we actually won a trophy, all in all our season was successful. I can't see SAF being unhappy with that.

I don't forget, and i agree totally, everyone knows Chelsea are buying the title.

However i still don't think it changes the fact that they coulda done with the cash. I think the Beeb only reported about a week ago that Arsenal were rolling in it because of this run.

Yes still quite sure, however I would have exchanged UAFA cup football next season to have won on Saturday.

Maybe we can suggest this to the powers that be, it's like trading emissions, they can trade trophies and seasons...

I can't take you seriously when you talk nonsense like that. Just cos i have a mortgage, i don't consider myself to be in debt.

Hahah so despite the £15 mill they have to pay per year just in interest they are still rolling in it?

Looks like they have if you feel that a sucsessful season for Man Utd is winning the League Cup, I am sure you remember when Sir Alex did not even bother playing the reserves in it, that is how much respect he had for the trophy, how the mighty have fallen and with such low expectations I wonder if your team will ever get back to the top.

Well we would have been at the top this year had Chelsea not had the Russian.

hang on, remind me once more, what did Arsenal win this year?

Where in the league did they finish?

Do you think they haven't worked it out so over a long period of time, it will pay off? Thats what you do when you buy a house, it's a life time commitment, not something that affects whether you can buy a TV or not just because you have 80k of debt in a mortgage. The stadium won't affect Wengers ability to wade into the transfer market at all, and the champions league run they have had will boost his ability, regardless of cost of stadium.

I believe the Arsenal board have already said that anyway.
