240 Hours on Standard Definition...so HD uses around 4x as much as SD uses...do the maths (twiddles thumbs and looks surprised...:rolleyes:)...so around 60 hours is what you'd expect...depending on whether the channel is upscaled or actually true hd... as were told few months back from a TM...we are also aware from a few test installs over the past few weeks that WE HATE THEM!!! haha

Seriously...23 Minutes for a DOWNLOAD on first Install !!!

Spose we really could go play around with the muxes and tag cables at the Slot Boxes lol :dunce:

Tivo as you know uses the new stb modems...only works on @ full capacity on 256 QAM...**** hit the fan when the not so super dooper hubs were released for 50meg users, then 20 & 30MB users have been asked to be upgraded to the new hub...bye bye old good solid modems! hello FLOPPY HUBS...:angel:

Are you referring to TV channels using 256 QAM?

I suspect that is what the poster was referring to but I could of course be wrong.

Your mileage may vary;) Thats real world useage on my TiVo. Its 7% full so just multiplied the recorded hours by 100 and divided by 7, after converting all the hd recordings to sd by x by 4. And then dividing the sd recordings by 4 to double check.

Its as accurate a figure without getting to complicated. My ratio of sd to hd recordings are 1:2. So the HD figure will be more accurate than the SD.

I am really confused.

The Tivo user guide says it can record about 400 hours of SD and 100 hours of HD.

Assuming SD is 2:1 like V+ (160gb = 80 hours) then I would calculate 1TB as 500 hours

I'm baffled! (dosen't take much)

Few teething problems with tivo's so far on first installs...as said in an earlier post of mine, 23minutes for box download! bit ridiculous...i use this time to run out and do cab tagging, toby checks and other service checks or generally get some fresh air...256 QAM compared to the 64 QAM on older boxes...where do i start....hmmmmm...lamens terms...3 HD Channels can fit onto the one QAM...but just because the 3 channels can fit into one, does not mean it is a good idea...the more the channels(HD) in one qam...the lesser the quality. So...basics are basics...Tivo DOES and SHOULD be set up to use 256 QAM in order for future services (even more HD CHANNELS) to be pumped down from head end to a fibre node near you, shocked down in little electric signals (RF) to an even smaller DP(Distribution Point) or Surface Box(Pit)...then down another little cable to your home...this is an ideal situation...buttt and i say BIG BUTT..... :P
It should be set at 256 QAM for future reference... :D
Also quick note for other posters...you should be checking outside at your little box attached to your home entry point (ETB/OMNI)...old style fittings (Blue skinned/Gold Skinned)...they should be silver with a black seal 3/4 of way down...seems to be a few problems with frequency roll off causing channels to go missing with the TIVO for which VM Cust Services blame on the box being faulty for which they are not...its the fittings that need renewed...so make sure your service tech or install engineer changes these...also ask him to make sure none of your cabling is HONEYCOMB!!! Channels dissapear randomly...seems to be an ever growing trend up here in scotland for engineers to become lazy and use existing cabling hmmmmmmmmm :/

And TiVo is reporting 7% full. The deleted folder hasnt been emptied and there are recordings in there which I'm assuming arent counted as taking up space by Tivo.

I won't begin to pretend to understand all of what you say but it is a very interesting post though, thanks.

I have read a fair bit about QAM, the issue you mention gets raised over and over. Just because you can fit in more channels the end result may not be acceptable but the common thing that comes out is that developments can come quick so hopefully it will be a very useful way of providing more channels when the technology glitches are ironed out.

Cheers, it's always better to get the info from an actual user.

VM are maybe underselling it then, they should change the user guide.
