I assume you are just talking about the PVR's, they are hardly no frills but the lowest PVR would be the Tivo 500GB.

You can however still get a V HD box http://shop.virginmedia.com/digital-...top-boxes.html

It's V HD or TiVo.

So, for new customers, the basic box now is V HD but if you want PVR facilities you have to choose a TiVo and, presumably, pay the up-front cost.

As an existing long-standing XL customer who has yet to have a HD or PVR capable box, what are my options and associated installation costs?

I've been a bit out of the loop for most of this year and haven't been following the trends and news in the VM TV forums hence the lack of awareness of what has been happening.

This should be my 750th post!!!

Your best option if you want to be future prof is to get a TiVo box

The 500GB box is £3 per month and has a £49.95 Standard engineer installation charge

The TiVo 1TB is as above but is £49.95 for the box plus the install charge.

As has already been stated the V+HD box is no longer been sold even to existing customers VM now only have the V box and TiVo box.

But I think Virgin and Sky maybe only cut to one stream like Freeview channel 301 - plus the BBC doing that will be let the BBC do away with all the ''Not on Freeview'' carry on.

That's the impression I got when I read the BBC's cuts proposals - all but one Red Button stream would be axed so that all digital viewers get the same Red Button service, and that the news multiscreen would also be axed.

Remember all these proposed cuts are not set in stone and are just proposals and that people have until the end of the year to reply to the consultation being carried out on these proposals.

On my Sam sung box the PBS picture is poor, l don't know about anyone else.

Must confess though, the picture quality on Sky is only slightly better, does anyone have a screwdriver.

Gin goes better with tonic, rather than vodka, imho.

PBS PQ is fine with me on my Tivo, watched NOVA tonight and SD PQ was equivalent to any other SD channel

Not very good i would think personally (apart from maybe news 24),what with the licence fee freeze and the move to salford quays not due to make any savings for 20 years at least so i read.

They already have BBC1 HD and a selection of HD programmes on the other BBC HD channel, i would imagine with the limited broadcasting hours and financial contraints BBC3/4 would not be going HD anyway.

And BBC news is moving to a new studio in central london which i suppose they could make into a HD one for BBC news 24 if cash allows.
