These are somewhat valid concerns. The greater issue is a huge amount of micromanaging your domestic lives with price changes in order to achieve some mythical net zero goal.

Or cutting of your electricity if they decide they don't like you.

Go on then what PII do they transmit ? And what is the cybersecurity breach risk ?

These smart meters bombard your whole house with RF energy that YOU CANT GET AWAY FROM unless the power goes out!

Of course the power companies are trying to force this... THEY MAKE OUT LIKE BANDITS!!

Not everything new in this world IS GOOD.....

Here’s why people, communities and governments around the world are rejecting smart meters:
  • Radiofrequency interference causing malfunctioning of wireless equipment such as Wi-Fi and Netflix
  • Radiofrequency interference causing malfunctioning of medical equipment such as pacemakers and wireless insulin pumps
  • Radiofrequency spikes causing appliances to break
  • Health effects like migraines, nausea, vomiting, muscle spasms, heart palpitations and sleeplessness caused by intense bursts of radiofrequency radiation that has just been classified as a “possible carcinogen” by the World Health Organization — in the same category as lead, engine exhaust and DDT
  • Cybersecurity breaches
  • Excessive billing
  • Interception of personal identity information
  • Electrical fires

This should be labelled the tinfoil hat brigade thread! And since when was Netflix a piece of equipment? :D

They have my name, address, bank details and my energy usage data (once I have used the meter) for many years. This could indicate to criminals where my house is and the perfect time to rob me.

My pension got hacked 2 years ago and I had to check on experian if someone was stealing my identity. These hacks are entirely expected these days.

Smart meters transmit no PII whatsoever. Smart meters transmit usage and tariff that’s it

Yes, but this data is then stored in the octopus energy database. I know because I can get it and use it in analysis tools.

Every company you deal with has personal info about you.

So your issue isn’t with the smart meter then….

---------- Post added at 15:24 ---------- Previous post was at 14:46 ----------

So…. Finally getting readings into the octopus app but not the IHD (not important really)

Is there a site or app where you can plug your api key in and it will analyse your usage data and can recommend which tariff you should use ?

Energy usage isnt personal information, nor does it provide any information on where your house is [Standing in front of it is generally a better location indicator].

The "octopus energy database" is not a smart meter, and the same information is stored in their database regardless of what type of meter you have.

The smart meter is there to facilitate this sort of data collection of information they would not normally have. That is the motivation for the technology. To pretend I literally mean the meter and only the meter is nonsense.

Smart meters literally cannot get your personal data, nor store it or leak it. It's literally a box in your home to monitor your energy usage and report the usage to the energy suppliers. It's got no more information than a traditional 'dumb' meter.

The motivation is to make life simpler. That's usually why new technology is invented.

Seems most of the time it's usually it's the opposite to that.

But saying that from what I've read so far, I would now change my vote from 'No' to 'Undecided' which is a step forward for me.

Err yes it does, it has the data broken down into 30min bins which encodes your daily habits. A traditional meter reading once a money cannot do that.

This is transmitted to the company and stored in a database which is next* to your home address.

*Not literally "next to" but clearly in the system.

So someone hacks a major energy retailer and the best use of the data is to… burgle people?
