On satellite the picture abruptly froze and then went to black level. AFAIK on VM it cut to a "technical problems" slate when the screen froze, then briefly to the frozen screen again and then a "channel no longer available" slate. Looks like they didn't know that their feed was to be cut off! |

Already come to VM but hopefully repeated - Laurel and Hardy films, courtesy of Talking Pictures. Haven't seen them on tv for years, still as good. Tivo has been very nice and recorded them for me :) About time L&H did some new films though ;) Laurel was from Lancashire - explains a lot !

I also notice that they have recorded the first episode on my box automatically, and it is now listed in 'My Shows'. Some may object to this, but it's a neat way of drawing attention to Virgin Exclusives. Otherwise, a lot of expensive content could be missed by many Virgin customers, who would not benefit from these new commissions. |

I think they should also have an exclusives channel number, where you could access these programmes by going to the channel, which would then send you to the relevant part of the on demand system. In fact, why not do that for other content as well, such as ITV Collections? It is clear from some of the posts on this forum that there are many who don't even know we have these channels, let alone know how to access them! |

I have almost given up on linear channels as I have over 30 saved series links and only 2 are actively recording on my current schedule, does not help that series changes channels!
Never thought I would say this but Netflix blows linear channel out of the water with their original programming, New Star Trek series and they have even got Series 3 of Gotham to view, WOW! |

Reading the current magazine, they have reviews of Star Trek: Discovery (Netflix); Designated Survivor (Netflix); Our Souls at Night (Netflix); Startup (Amazon); and Gerald's Game (Netflix). The only new dramas the magazine was able to feature on the broadcast channels were The Child in Time (BBC1); The Deuce (Sky Atlantic); and Law & Order True Crime (Sky Living). That is pretty poor in my book and is indicative of the way things are going. 2016/17 was a bad year on broadcast TV - let's hope that 2017/18 is better, although I'm not holding my breath! |

I don't know if others saw my post on another thread but this was a webpage about the V6 on offer due to the price rise. It actually mentioned BT Sport in 4k. The virgin team on the community forums said it was a mistake and was removed but it doesn't look like a mistake to me and could be a leak that it is coming soon.
It also mentions a new app called Virgin TV Go which will finally allow streaming over 3G or 4G. https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2017/09/15.jpg |

Although I expect Discovery also to make a bid, my feeling is it won't be hogh enough to thwart Sky, although I wouldn't rule it out. I have no such qualms about Amazon. I thought your argument was based on the cost. You have always said Sky would always be prepared to trump any other bid (which Sky themselves have denied) and that is why I mentioned it. What other reason would you have for your much weaker and unsubstantiated argument that Sky would win over Amazon? With all due respect, if Amazon went for it, Sky wouldn't stand a chance. ---------- Post added at 14:26 ---------- Previous post was at 14:22 ---------- Quote:

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)
So by that logic Amazon should trump Fox for all US Sports shouldn't they , but wait they have some tennis rights coming and one NFL game a week.
If Amazon does bid for EPL which I may add I'm not saying they won't they certainly won't be going for the lions share. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think Thursday Night NFL games were the only package Amazon could get their hands on, I think the other packages are still in multi year contracts.
With regard to Premier League rights NBC hold those in Amazon's home territory of the USA until the end of the 2021-2022 season, also the Premier League are reluctant to give up on their policy of selling rights to individual countries, so if Amazon are to bid for the Premier League my thoughts are that it would be for just one or two packages, maybe the mooted new Saturday night slot would be in their sights for the European territories they operate in? I'd also hazard a guess that as Amazon acquires more sports rights they cease to be free for Amazon Prime customers and a separate sports sub will be required a la Amazon Music (if you want a decent music service rather than the free one), Amazon Fresh, Audible and any of their other services that require more than a Prime subscription. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)
Quote:
There is no doubt in my mind that Amazon will charge separately for any sports channels it adds to its system, just as you have to pay extra for Discovery, etc on Amazon now. They won't do it for free, that's for sure, the rights are far too costly for that to be a proposition. You may well be right that Amazon could go for the smaller packages on this next round to test the waters, with a view to tackling Sky the next time around. BT should be getting worried, I would have thought. By the way: http://advanced-television.com/2017/...en-atp-finals/ |

As the period of cross funding from the BBC ends for the older local tv franchises, it will be interesting to see how the original commitments to local content are allowed to fall by the wayside. Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)
Indeed, I bet that it's the loss of BBC funding that has led to it being taken off Sky.
Sky Living Ireland HD closed at 10:20am yesterday morning on Sky, but there has been reports that it is still being shown on VM Ireland. Can anyone verify this? It could be plausible as VM HD channels are line fed and this wouldn't cost Sky anything in extra capacity. ---------- Post added at 01:16 ---------- Previous post was at 01:02 ---------- For those missing Bike TV, Ofcom has just awarded a new satellite & cable licence for Ride TV. It must be a massive outlay for just a few thousand viewers. London Live is the only local channel I know of that uses Sky, & with a potential audience in millions rather that thousands this is the only one ever likely too (Excluding possibly STV2). |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)
Quote:
BBC funding of "diary stories" is £150,000 in the first year of operation, reducing to £110,000 in the second year and £40,000 in the third year. As this source of funding dries up and local content commitments are reduced, there will no doubt be further cutbacks. With many local services merely relaying national commercial services such as TruTV for most of the day, there is little point in using limited resources to repeat this over multiple platforms. It will be interesting to see how these channels develop over the next few years. With local content being reduced to a few hours a week, on demand and internet distribution would probably have been more sensible than the current model. |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)
Possible sign that the rumour that GOLD is to go HD could be true.
Apparently, UKTV are currently testing an (encrypted) channel on satellite using Eden, but with EPG listings for GOLD HD! Hopefully they will make GOLD SD FTA and put it on Freeview (which might explain the confusion over an advert that appeared to suggest that it was advertising GOLD as being on Freeview) and keep the HD variant behind a paywall. If true, I wonder if we will get GOLD HD on VM? We only got the full selection of UKTV channels just before VM sold off their stake in them. Anyone know when the carriage deal is up for renewal? |
Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)
Quote:
As Nottingham is a predominantly Virgin Media area and the majority of viewers use either the VM platform or Freeview (their words not mine), the exorbitant fees (their words again) charged for satellite carriage (I'm guessing by Sky for guide listing?) have been deemed unsustainable. Seems Notts TV is here to stay, just not on Sky. Cheers Phil |

Mustard TV didn't cope so well with the situation in Norwich. It has ceased producing new local content and is only broadcasting repeats of older material until the takeover by That's TV is complete. That's TV normally use Freeview only, the exception being the Cambridge franchise, another area they have bought out. It will be interesting to see what happens to VM coverage with these acquisitions. |

Been very disappointed with local TV in my area for the very reason they show little to no actual local TV programs. Made In Tyne & Wear for example (which incidentally is on Sky ) shows America's Got Talent! Hardly made in Tyne & Wear is it!
