NTL did something similar. Around once every 2 days, they rotated channel 106 (when BBC One was channel 1) aka the Guest Channel, so the channels in the more expensive packages were allowed to air on this slot for 24-48 hours before handing over this slot to another channel in order to tempt customers in the basic pack to upgrade. I have a feeling something such as this may return to Virgin.

Well RichardCoulter did say last week that TCM will be on Channel 100 on October 31st.

I too recall The Guest Channel on NTL, but I remember it being on longer than a few days; IIRC it changed every month.

Then, one month 'Rapture' was The Guest Channel. After the month was up it remained on its own channel on the most basic package at the time and The Guest Channel was no more.

I suspect that they had just signed a carriage agreement with Rapture and used this to create the impression that it was something extra for the final month of The Guest Channel :D

This is about v6 box and the features the app will provide. So we will face some restrictions on what recordings we can download from v6 to tablet ( sky sports and movies maybe ) and steaming not allowed on 3G or 4g

When it comes to any sky movies if you can find them it's not easy it says "content not available when your away from your home network" I'm on my home network all else is fine apart from sky premium

When you go into what to watch and movies, there are movies just not sky movies and no Sky sports on demand to watch either

RichardCoulter 25-10-2016 23:58

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Cheers.

Just read the info. about the V6.

To summarise for the Coming Soon thread:

-For the foreseeable you won't be able to download any Sky premium content from the V6 to your tablet device (unlike Sky Q).

-The only confirmed 4K content will be Netflix (with a reduced price of £7 for V6 customers), youtube 4K and a number of virgin movies in 4K priced between £6.99 and £9.99 for two days rental.

VM are in talks with BT Sport for 4K content, but there will be no Sky content from any Sky channel in 4K as this is exclusive to Sky customers until March 2018.

- There isn't a UHD section in the software at all but the box is 4K ready, meaning that the initial material available on Sky Q will not be accessible (124 live Premier League games, every F1 race from 2017, 70 films including Spectre and The Revenant, 30 hours of natural history and new dramas such as The Blacklist).

Thanks putting that in a better way but sadly it's all true, we need to pay £84 a year for some 4K and miss on the blacklist on 4K. Virgin can get to overturn exclusive if the money's right

Thanks as always MB for info.

For a communications company, VM has always been really bad at communicating.

The CEO office were told about the capability to send out messages to TiVo customers and replied "what a good idea", yet all I've ever received are a couple of auto messages welcoming me to the service, it's pathetic.

Fox News Channel shows up in the Network Information Table of the following "networks":

NGRHEE Bromley
Code Download Test (Portsmouth)
TTA Knowsley DMC (Hayes_RHE)
NGRHEE Knowsley

Any "testing" will be restricted to those "networks", which do not appear to be customer facing networks. I haven't seen the NIT data for the ex-NTL Langley areas, so can't comment about those.

Other observations:

The 1/4 screen 4KTV tests are listed in the NIT for: Manchester Trials.

RTE One, RTE Two and TG4 are in the NIT for:

NGRHEE Bromley
TTA Bromley DMC (Bromley RHE)
Manchester TRIALS

I found that unusual as I would have only expected to see those on the Northern Ireland regions, which are on the ex-NTL Langley part of the network. The post NGTV organisation of Virgin Media is quite interesting.

Frequency changes have been noted in various regions, with TV transport streams moving to create a wider band of frequencies, presumably in preparation for DOCSIS 3.1.

As I said, it is only active on the Manchester Trials network. Scanning in other regions will list the channels because they are in the SDT but there will be no content because the transport streams aren't available.

It is, also keep your eyes peeled as UHD channels are on route apparantly, only one i can think off is BT Sport maybe vm and BT have sealed a deal?

If you don't like sport, we have a shiny new box but no UHD, over at sky loads in UHD, the new blacklist on 4K would be amazing ⚡️

There are various miscellaneous test transport streams in various regions, such as the Frequency Tests on TS IDs 301 to 304 (no EIT data, but the channels carry similar content to the VM Preview channels), the 4KTV test on TS ID 389 (EIT description is "Getting the most from Virgin Media" - the same description as EPG 999 Virgin iD) and other tests on TS ID 399 (the EIT data indicates that these are duplicates of BBC / ITV / C4 channels).

Haha yes, but by the time we get to that resolution, the screen size would have to be massive to notice any difference. People will be moving into warehouses just to have enough room to accommodate the TV. :D

If the latest content is your priority, Sky has always been the place to be.

Would you launch a non-4k box at this point in time? No provider would be that stupid (well, except for Apple; but they'll just fleece their fanboys for a 4K version down the line ;))

Just because they don't have 4K content now, doesn't mean that they won't have within the lifetime of the box.

In fairness to VM:
- Neither BT nor TalkTalk has announced any plans for YouView to distribute content to mobile devices.
- VM remains the second strongest TV platform content-wise behind Sky. Neither BT nor TalkTalk has caught up on it content-wise but have had several years in which to do so.

Well, the V+ only had the BBC HD channel for years before any more joined (which wouldn't have cost VM anything in carriage costs).

VM made it clear that they were in no hurry to adopt 4K ages ago

No but come on to launch it will no content apart from material that requires further subscription. Now I do agree it needs to be 4K but to charge extra for a box that doesnt have anything 4K to show is wrong, at least throw in Netflix, if not what's the point

I don't think so, i know BT are investing heavily into tv with rumours of their own entertainment channel surfacing too.
BT certainly have the funds to go head to head with SKY for content rights and live sport.
VM will just sit back and leech from other providers, nothing wrong with that imo just good business why pay hundreds of millions for content when you can get a deal with the likes of SKY,BT etc to carry their content.
This could however backfire on vm if SKY and BT suddenly decide they don't want anyone else carrying their content then it's game over for VM tv wise, however this is unlikely to happen but VM are falling behind both SKY and BT already have 4k content and devices out, not sure if talktalk do.

Precisely. We are only really missing out on Sky Atlantic and ITV Encore.

Virgin Media will close the gap with Sky through the launch of the new eos box and then with more apps such as Amazon, together with VM original on demand content, which will be easier to access with the additional tuners.

Reports of Virgin Media's demise are greatly exaggerated. Sky fanboys, please calm yourselves. Nobody knows for sure at this stage how much UHD content there will be on the V6 at launch so we should not be talking Virgin down on that score.

TalkTalk doesn't offer 4K TV. In fact, it only offers the Sky channels in SD not HD.

But these apps you talk about aren't inclusive with a VM package you are paying more for them so Virgin Media are giving you access on the box no more no less.

Spot on! Sky Atlantic is a good channel but ITV Encore is a non-event.
Despite 4K functionality, BT TV is extremely weak on content by not offering the full Sky Sports portfolio, the Sky Entertainment channels and Fox.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

I've just taken a look at my recordings, and I now have only 11 from the non premium Sky channels, and not all of them are up to the quality I would expect. By far, the most good programming is coming out of the terrestrials at the moment, and given this does make me wonder about whether it is worth paying as much as we do for them. If it wasn't for Fox and the documentary channels, I would seriously think about cutting my losses. I am certainly tempted to just take Now TV (Entertainment and Movies passes), Netflix and Amazon, and just taking the minimum package of channels from Virgin.

Virgin are right to be thinking of concentrating on the quality on demand/apps side of things rather than new rubbish broadcast channels, but monetising this is a challenge.

No, but as discussed previously, having all your apps on one box is very useful (as long as it isn't slow, of course). If you then procure additional apps that are not available elsewhere, and also keep adding to the on demand menus, there you have your exclusivity.

No fanboys just facts VM leech of other companies, i've always said it VM made a huge mistake selling living, bravo etc imo they had a very strong bargaining chip with those channels and i will say one thing for VM they treated those channels a lot better than SKY have.
The fact remains if SKY and BT decide that they no longer wish vm to carry their channels once the contracts are up then VM tv will become very poor, it's unlikely to happen but never say never.
If you think the new tivo is gods gift to tv you're in for a very rude awakening.
However i hear there will be offers available on the new tivo from launch to rival SKYs offers on skyq.

Never used it mate tbf but i can verify that the online tv from bt does not allow you to view recordings infact it has no on demand either which is a pretty poor show from BT, but with BT investing heavily in their tv this is most likely to change in the near future one thinks.
Talktalk i think they're finished tbh not even worth talking about them anymore lol,.
There will be 3 big players in the tv market in this order one thinks SKY, VM and BT in the long run.

I don't think it is right to describe VM as 'leeching' off other companies, theone. People who watch pirated material are leeching. Virgin Media pay for the material they broadcast to their subscribers quite legitimately, and this is Liberty Global's strategy. You don't need to own channels to get the content you want.

However, there is a problem with exclusive deals that restrict some content to specific providers, and unless there is future legislation to prevent this from happening, Virgin's only defence is to acquire exclusive content of its own. Again, it does not need to actually own channels to achieve this.

Virgin could change their strategy to compete directly with Sky in this way if they wanted to. Remember that when Sky withdrew its channels from us, we very quickly found Virgin 1 coming to our screens, and the same could happen again. John Malone is busily acquiring interests in quite a number of content providers, of which Lionsgate is particularly interesting, and I wouldn't underestimate cable's ability to put up some impressive rival channels at short notice if needs be. I would be surprised if a contingency plan was not already in place.

There are a lot of moans from VM TV customers at present, mainly because of the slow Tivo and the lack of Sky Atlantic. The V6 is poised to resolve the slowness issue and Sky Atlantic is solvable. However, if VM make the decision not to acquire Sky Atlantic, then in my opinion it needs to go all out to acquire as much exclusive quality content as it can lay its hands on.

Sky has major problems of its own to look forward to. They are unlikely to get a new exclusive HBO deal given the new strategy being adopted by that company and when existing rights with film studios are due to expire, they will be going head to head with some big players, such as Netflix and Amazon. Additionally, rights to the football premiership cannot be guaranteed for long, with increased competition being brought to bear from other players with deeper pockets. Malone's strategy is a pretty good one when seen in this light.

I do agree with you that the three big players will be Sky, Virgin Media and BT into the future, but I don't see Virgin falling behind BT.

As for the V6, I don't believe the adverse comments that we are hearing from detractors who don't know any more than the rest of us. I think it will be a good alternative to Sky Q, although whether it will be better we will find out when it is launched.

Personally, I wouldn't be too sure about that. I'm not sure how any people would actually shell out £10 p/m just for HBO content. Atlantic also includes Showtime's content, in another exclusive Premium content deal with Sky. AMC content is tied to an excusive deal with BT, with some content exclusive to Amazon. There is no way an 'HBO Nordic like service' could happen in the UK at this time

I think HBO would make more money renewing their Sky deal.

My guess is that HBO will come to a non-exclusive deal with Sky while launching its content on demand website.

I suppose there could be alternatives. Maybe an exclusive deal with Sky to broadcast the shows on its channels while uploading them on its own subscription website. There are also other possibilities.

The point is, the status quo on these exclusive deals cannot be guaranteed in this fast changing market.

The only value of HBO to Sky, is it's exclusivity, and (the supposed) up-market perception that it brings

I suppose there could be alternatives. Maybe an exclusive deal with Sky to broadcast the shows on its channels while uploading them on its own subscription website. There are also other possibilities.

The point is, the status quo on these exclusive deals cannot be guaranteed in this fast changing market.

Interestingly, in the Netherlands, HBO closed down its channels and on-demand service recently which were available on all platforms. Its content became exclusive to Ziggo, part of LibertyGlobal. Why? Because Ziggo opened its cheque book in the same way that Sky Atlantic has done. Money talks.

And that's why I think that in 2020, HBO will do a new deal with Sky

I think it's highly likely as well. I think the only thing that may alter this would be if HBO's corporate strategy alters as a result of parent company TimeWarner being acquired by AT&T.

Yes, this is why I think that Sky exclusivity may end in 2020.

Well, I and many others are currently paying £6.99 per month for Now TV's Entertainment Pack, just to get Sky Atlantic. £10 per month seems a bit steep, but I guess that depends on what other content they may add to it. I might be prepared to pay it instead of subscribing to Now TV if that made sense.

Its no secret that VM have tried to get Sky Atlantic but Sky wanted too much for it. Could we see a bidding war for the HBO content just like the Premier League? Sky, VM and BT all wanting the content and would be quite a feather in the cap for VM who are trying to get back in the content game. We know BT have deep pockets when it comes to things like this too.

If Virgin enter a bidding war then there's no chance of them winning because they always want everything on the cheap!

Oh good grief I hope not , isn't the current high pricing of pay tv thanks in part to the Sports bidding war between Sky and BT.

Its true that VM want channels on the cheap. Sky offered VM SA at a reasonable prise. But VM turned this down.

At the end of the day - ITS US that end up paying for it. So why doesn't VM let us decide

I think it is pushing up the price of TV but it's great news for consumers who are prepared to shop around. SKY and Virgin have been offering some crazy deals to new customers. I've had my TV for SKY for nearly 4 years at 50%, or more, off. Look at this mental offer they e-mailed me earlier today.

[img][/img]

50% off my TV package for the next 5 years without any contract. Cancel when I want and I don't even have to confirm I accept the offer, it's already applied to my account. I don't currently have SKY Sports or SKY Cinema but if I add them, they automatically go on at 50% off too. The only TV things that are not 50 % off are HD and multiroom.

I'm not the only person to receive this offer. A woman at my work got the same e-mail last week. She's had 50% off her TV for the past 10 months. I thought she must have read it wrong as I hadn't seen it mentioned anywhere else.

muppetman11 27-10-2016 20:55

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

I've seen that posted in another thread on a different forum. I agree if you'll shop around there's bargains to be had but in my opinion its even more evidence that more and more are ringing to cancel or downgrade. I've never not had an offer in my account for Sky Cinema and Sky Sports when I've been without them.

Existing customers who are already on a deal. I posted here a few weeks ago that something looked funny on my SKY account:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...3697840&page=2

The interesting thing is, as posted in the above thread, when SKY announced their price increases this year my package didn't go up in price. I received a letter confirming price increses but my letter said my package was going up by £0.00. My price didn't budge. I don't know if that will be the same over the next 5 years but it looks promising.

Yeah, I've not been shy over the years.

I don't think this discount will remain if I upgrade to SKYQ. Not too fussed at the moment as I don't have a 4k TV.

I remember earlier this year a poster confirming that SKY where going to finish offering their retention deals when people on offers came to the end of their 12 month deal. I wonder if their doing this across the board instead of having to haggle with people on the phone who are trying to get another years worth of TV on the cheap?

VM were not offered Sky Atlantic at a reasonable price, I can't remember what it was (I did post it in this thread yonks ago), but it was a lot more than the usual price for a basic channel.

Russia Today is currently off air on satellite and broadcasting a caption saying "scheduled maintenance GMT 9:00pm-7:00am" along with some music.

I think something is afoot, it's highly unusual for a channel to go off air for hours due to "maintenance"!!

Whilst it's off air on satellite, I'm not sure about VM Ireland & Freeview- could somebody with these platforms check please?

Not highly unusual for RT, it's just something they do, fairly often.

The channel numbering is such a mess - when are they going to address it? I found myself on More4 last night but only in SD (channel 147). Where can I find it in HD? Channel 203! Where's the logic in that??

In fact, where's the logic in any of the numbering anymore? Why is BBC4 on 107 in SD but on 163 in HD? (and 106 is empty!)

I'm surprised the programme makers aren't up in arms - it's an absolute farce
