Sets of Channels are transmitted to your set-top box along different frequencies (Streams). The channel would have been ungrouped from a set of channels on one frequency and grouped with another set of channels on a different frequency. Hence the channel had moved to a different / new stream.

Looks like Sky are going to up the SS prices on VM AGAIN!

If VM don't get BT sport, then I am off, as it is starting to become a joke.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

I must admit I havent seen Sky blagging the 'only on Sky' line about Atlantic for a while. There recent advert for the Sopranos doesn't say it.

With BT stepping up their game recently in getting subscribers it is about time Sky and Virgin work together, as much as they are competing in the same market, it tends to be if you cant get cable you get Sky, or if you are not allowed a dish, you get cable.

If Sky get those who are being tempted away from Virgin to enjoy their content, then they wont get BT, they will get Sky, so it would work out better for Sky really.

Where have you read this?

Skys general tv price is set to rise, however the deal with Sky that is apparently happening now is over their basic channels, not Sky Sports, and even if it was and they upped the prices, we will quite likely get SS3, SS4 and SSF1 in HD

At last, a bit more news re the "coming soon" Sky Atlantic! ;)

To those who said it would never happen, etc, time will tell, but let's put this into perspective - it's only a TV channel with a relatively short-life line of programming. I don't see this is a major factor in new negotiatons so it will likely be bundled in with TV XL to keep VM's customer's sweet.

Whatever VM paid to EPSN will likely now pass to Sky as part of the bundle price, which IMHO is a realistic valuation of the channel as it now stands.

I mean why pay Viacom two times in the one month!!!

The article doesn't mention HD, as far as I'm aware its referring to the fact you get 3/4/News/F1 included when you take 1 & 2.

Very good point MB as why have 2 outlays when you can consolidate in to one payment.

I was told today that VM have heard a rumour that, in an attempt to try and scupper things for BT, everytime that BT have a live match on, Sky will make it's football available for free.

I asked if this meant that some or all of the Sky Sports channels would be temporarily unencrypted, if they would be moved or simulcast on a channel such as Sky One or if they would be put onto Pick TV to dissuade Freeview viewers from subscribing to BT Sport (not sure if they can or not) and was told that he didn't know the answer to that.

Does anyone know if sports rights that are sold with pay TV rights MUST be shown on pay TV, or if Sky are able to show them FTA should they wish to do so?

If not, that rules out Pick TV, but the option of putting them on a channel like Sky One would comply with any "must carry on pay TV" requirement.

Looks like the rumour that VM heard last weekend may be true then, although it doesn't mention any future free football to try and scupper BT matches.

I wonder why it appears to be simulcast on Sky 2 and Pick TV, why not just put it on Pick TV to cover freeview and pay tv customers

After all the additional channels we have had recently, Sky Atlantic really will be the icing on the cake for me.

Then it'll just be the 'six lanes of programming' to look out for via Netflix and wherever!

If we aren't getting BT Sports, I wonder if the money saved from ESPN will be used to fund Sky Atlantic now that they have offered it at a more realistic price?

When we do get it, I'm sure that everything that we missed whilst it was not on the VM platform will be repeated (again and again :D)

I agree if VM manage to capture Sky Atlantic I believe it will be a great addition for its customers I also believe it will help with attracting new customers it will certainly bring them back into my reckoning.

To those who claim its full of repeats and filler content your right but which pay TV channel isn't however the fact is over a year it broadcasts some excellent series , Game of thrones , The Newsroom , Boardwalk Empire , Banshee , The Borgias and Blue Bloods to name but a few , throw Netflix with its originals into the mix and you've got an excellent choice of content.

As it's becoming more and more likely that BT Sports will probably be a standalone premium channel(s) on VM a la Sky, I think Sky Atlantic would be a fantastic replacement for ESPN in the XL pack. I think that would certainly keep the value of the XL pack.

I appreciate that it's a different genre but (as I've said before) I reckon the best tactic Sky and VM can use now is to work together to make both of their offerings better than BT. This way it would discourage people from joining / moving to BT as their whole packages wouldn't be as enticing.

Be an interesting month ahead when presumably all will be revealed! :)

SKY Atlantic is a basic channel on the SKY platform, the same as SKY One and SKY Arts. Why would Virgin customers be happy for it to go into the XL package?

I have SKY just now but keep an eye on what Virgin are doing with their platform. My SKY contract expires in December and I wouldn't rule out coming back to Virgin, especially if they add SKY Atlantic. I wouldn't be happy having to take XL or VIP to enjoy the channel. SKY Atlantic is a good channel with programs my wife and I really enjoy however it shouldn't be exclusive to XL, in my opinion.

It would have been a good addition as it does have slightly different content, MTV Music and MTV Hits have very similar content and even repeat some of the same shows.

It seems odd that it is the only non-timeshift channel they haven't added. Things were shuffled around a little after MTV channels were removed last time, so maybe MTV has a reshuffle scheduled and will be dropping a channel, MTV Classics could then replace the removed channel. Entirely speculation, of course.

Pretty much because quite a few of the channels from the XL package have recently been added to lower packages. This only devalues the XL package, loss of ESPN will devalue it further.. they will have to bulk up the content at some point or reduce the price difference.

Just in case anyone missed this from the article about Sky Atlantic:

"Carriage negotiations for Sky’s other channels on Virgin Media are due to be renewed this month, at which time a deal for Sky Atlantic is likely to be discussed."

May get Sky1+1 and other missing Sky basic channels if things work out.

Nope.

Sky deals are just two.

-Sky Basic (Sky1, Sky2, Sky Arts, Sky Living, Sky Livingit, Pick TV and Challenge) - Broadcastnow says it run out an end of Month.
-Sky Sports/Sky Movies - deal runs out in June 2014.

The new carriage deals are understood to be for up to nine years. Previously the carriage deals tended to be struck every three years.

I don't see it as a big deal. Yes, maybe on launch, but the channel is well established now. We have other Sky HD channels, so what difference does adding one more in HD?

It's no longer a deal breaker or maker for consumers, so it would just seem very petty if Sky were to withhold the HD version. Who's to say that VM might insist that the HD version is included otherwise no deal will be struck at all. I'm sure even Sky with all their profits won't want to lose customers via other carriers.

I can see the following coming if Virgin can do the deal:

-Sky News HD
-Sky Sports News HD
-Sky1 +1
-Pick TV +1
-Sky Atlantic
-Sky Atlantic +1

But I can't see the following channels coming:

-Sky Atlantic HD
-Sky Sports 3 HD
-Sky Sports 4 HD

As part of the Virgin Media Television Channels being sold to Sky deal on June 4th 2010.

Quote:

As part of the deal, Virgin Media has secured new long-term carriage agreements for its cable TV network for wholesale distribution of Sky's basic subscription channels, including Sky1, Sky News and Sky Arts, and the services it is selling.

The new carriage deals are understood to be for up to nine years. Previously the carriage deals tended to be struck every three years.

For an incremental wholesale fee, Virgin Media will also for the first time have the option of carrying any of Sky's basic HD channels, Sky Sports HD 1 and Sky Sports HD 2, and all Sky Movies HD channels.

I'm a football fan and will be sorry to lose ESPN but to be honest I would have swapped it for Sky Atlantic at any stage as I believe I would get much more entertainment from that than the odd decent Premiership game that ESPN had.

Obviously all customers have their preferences but I reckon SA would probably get higher viewing figures on VM than ESPN did the majority of the time.

Cancelations do have a habit of saying what the customer wants to hear.

I would imagine that the Premier League would have something to say over the second largest TV audience not having access to their games. The sponsors will be kicking quite heavily if they knew the numbers viewing were reduced.

I would imagine that the Premier League would have something to say over the second largest TV audience not having access to their games. The sponsors will be kicking quite heavily if they knew the numbers viewing were reduced.

Well ESPN got away with low audience figures for years, the take up on Sky was virtually non existent when it launched.

Has anybody else been told this....

I can see Virgin Media doing an deal with BT/ESPN but it will not be on the XL Package - we will need to pay extra for it.

ESPN was not confirmed as coming to Virgin Media until late July 2009.

well if it is not included in the XL package (or VIP at least ) then they can shove it where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned :td:

My apologies for misinterpreting - after a couple of glasses of red and a large scotch, my subtle-o-meter wasn't set off.
