Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news
There will be no doubt some good games on Bt, after all, there were on ESPN. What there won't be are any of the headline matches that sell subscriptions. Sky can control when Bt get their rremaining 8 top picks - if the best match of that weekend is Man U v. Palace then that's what they're stuck with. They spent ttoo much time trumpeting their number of top picks, and now they've been made to look a little silly (as predicted).
And when you consider that Setanta failed and ESPN didn't want to continue despite having all the xl customers as guaranteed revenue, something Bt don't yet have, and the fact that those who actually attend matches won't be able to watch their output because they'll be on the way to the game, I think it's fair to say that Bt will struggle for viewing figures. I know that's not necessarily the most important factor to gauge the success of this venture for Bt, but I simply can't see that they'll ever be able to make money from it. |

Interview with Marc Watson, chief executive of TV at BT Retail:
http://www.techradar.com/news/intern...-sport-1165781 ""What I'm hoping it will do is bring more customers into the market who want to watch this sport. Sky is doing one day for free. If [customers] want to watch this kind of sport going forward then there's only one company that's free all the time and that's us," says Watson." This suggests BT Sports won't go into XL when it arrives on the Virgin platform. |

Incidentally, it is up to VM if they want to pay more for it and then offer it without extra charge (or reduced charge) to XL viewers. It should not be forgotten that the BT deal is only for the first year. The VM arrangement will be for the length of the contract, so it could turn out to be better value than BT! |

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news
Just had a call from Virgin offering me a "free" upgrade to Tivo for one of my boxes and 100mb broadband (currently have V+ and a regular old non-hd V box and 60mb).
Was considering it but they wanted a 12month extension to my contract. Not doing that until I know the BT Sport situation*. When I said that the guy (a call centre bod, unlikely to have much inside info I would imagine) said that they were in negotiations and he was "confident" it would be added. However when I repeated the "no extension until I know for sure" message he could not get off the phone quick enough. So is this a (desperate) ploy from Virgin to get people tied in before the change over next month and a sign that it's not coming or is it just a regular call that I might have expected anyway due to my years of regular custom? *Whilst I am a football watcher I want BT Sport for the Moto GP coverage and that alone is enough to make me consider changing providers if Virgin don't get it or my package if they do and there's a cost (e.g. bye bye Sky Sports). |

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news
I like my sport but not at any price, I used to enjoy ESPN on my XL package, Rugby at 2-00pm ish and Premier League at 5-30 on a Saturday.
I would want to watch Aviva Premiership rugby but I think that Sky will now be showing the 5-30pm Barclays premier games. I am not interested in watching Footy on a Sunday or Monday evening, but saturday lunchtime could be OK given the right fixtures. VM did try to get me to extend my contract about a month ago, I told them i wanted to see what is happening with BT sport first, hopefully I will find out in the next 10 days or so. |

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news
It certainly doesn`t look good for them. I don`t know what other sport they show because I`m only interested in football but I can`t see many subscribing now. The only possible solution I can think of is if they did a deal of some kind with either virgin and/or sky to become included in their packages (xl for virgin and sports pack on sky). Not sure whether they would make a bit more money that way rather than relying on people to sub to them separately or not?

Its the Australian rugby league (NRL) and the Championship RL (the level below Super League) that I want from Premier Sports. I hope that it does come under VM's wings under what ever format. I can't get Sky (30m trees at the bottom of my garden means I can't get any reception), but I'd be off to BT like a shot if they got hold of the rights to those two
|
Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news
August 1st is also my contract renewal date, if BT sport does become available to VM with XL customers having to pay say £12pm then I may possibly be able to offset some of the increase by changing my pack from XL to L.
Having a look at the channels I regularly look at, I would only miss out on Nat Geo. I view Sky Sports News every day but that is available on L, the majority of progs on XL I have never bothered with. I am going mad now, what is it 16 posts in 7 years? :-) |

BT Sport signs up half a million in Sky battle
BT says it has signed up more than 500,000 subscribers to its television sports channels ahead of the new football season. BT Sport is being launched in August as part of the company's plans to compete with Sky and boost revenues. It has secured the rights to 38 Premier League matches in the coming season, compared with Sky's 116. The update came as BT reported pre-tax profits of £449m for the three months to June, above analysts' expectations. BT's chief executive Ian Livingston said the subscriber numbers were promising. "It is early days but we are very pleased with the strong start in BT Sport. More than half a million households have now ordered BT Sport and that's before the channels have even launched," he said. Sky Sports does not reveal how many subscribers it has, but it is widely believed to be in the millions. BT's sports offering is partly designed to prevent customers from defecting to Sky and taking their broadband and telephone accounts with them. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-23446248 |
Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

|
Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news
if those figure are true then there now way BT will be included in the XL package.
BT will be rubbing their hands on how many will jump ship from virgin to bt. |
Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news
Thing is though the majority are existing broadband customers adding the new service for free so BT's profits won't gain that much they only signed up 23,000 new pay-TV subscribers where as Talk Talk added 160,000 customers to its pay-TV service to the end of June
BT must be concerned by there pay TV service considering they've only got around 833,000 customers in around 7 years |

Sky tells Virgin Media customers: “We’ll pay your BT Sport subscription when you move” Sky is targeting rival Virgin Media’s customers with an offer to pay their subscription to BT Sport if they move their TV and broadband services. While BT’s forthcoming sport channels are available to Sky customers, both free to those who buy their broadband from BT and via a £12pm subscription for those who don’t, the cable company has yet to confirm a carriage deal with BT. The absence of a deal has lead to complaints from some Virgin Media customers who are due to lose their existing free access to ESPN, bought earlier this year by BT, at the end of the month. A special offer currently available via Sky.com and available only to customers switching from Virgin Media includes “Free credits” for BT Sport 1&2 and ESPN for 12 months. The site says: “When you move to Sky TV with The Sports Bundle, we’ll give you a £12 credit each month for 12 months and £15 for one-off cover activation. Then simply use this to sign up directly with BT, and you’ll get BT Sport 1&2 and ESPN for free.’ Customers will still need to sign up to BT Sports via BT.com as the ISP has yet to agree to Sky selling the channels on its behalf and is selling them direct to its rival’s customers. The offer is available to anyone transferring TV, phone and broadband packages http://www.seenit.co.uk/sky-tells-vi...-move/0728957/ |

Patterson warned that Virgin Media's cable customers may "never" have access to BT's sports content. Virgin carries the Sky sports channels and was able to offer its customers all the Premier League games by carrying ESPN, which shared rights to the matches with Sky before BT won them. Asked whether Virgin would eventually carry the BT Sport channels, Patterson said: "We are in discussions but it depends how those discussions go. It might never. They may need to consider their choices. It's another reason why customers might chose to switch over from Virgin to BT." |
