There are many strenghs the tivo has but a weakness at the moment is that it has no interactive features and that needs to improve.

Mine was like that for a few days after installation but now it works as you would expect. Pressing stop, stops the playback. It seems like the TiVo really does take a week to settle down.:)

Watch out your bills this month, the £40 installer fee has not been credited back on my account and my May bill has now been posted on my account with no credit. Rang up VM and they will be addressing but could catch out others? I pay by monthly DD by the way.

I discovered yesterday that Tivo does tag on any part of a programme it has on a tuner recording a channel continuously if you watch a programme and then decide to record it part way through. Very nice! Watched a programme for 15 minutes then decided to record the rest and found out next day that it has recorded the time I had watched it.

I got the £40 credited to my account but have been charged the £3 monthly TiVo fee, even though I'm on VIP50 and shouldn't pay it! Phoned yesterday, spent ages on the phone. The person I spoke to couldn't work out what was going on so referred it to a manager. Been told it'll be sorted out. Fingers crossed it does and I'm billed correctly next month but I'm not holding my breath. :erm:

PEARL JAM in the keywords field, separated by a space (to do an exact phrase match)

Good luck! Hope it all goes well. Most installations have no problems. Be prepared for the data to take a while to fully download. It may appear to be up and running but it can take a few days to be fully up to speed.

Let us know how you get on!:)

Is there anywhere where I can read a summary of the pros and cons of TiVo? Without reading all of these two threads.
Not that it makes much difference as mine is being installed on 3/5 but I would like to know what I can/ can't do.

Thanks.

Very well.

They had to change the outside box (it had been there since '95, and wasn't big enough for whatever they had to fit for TiVo), swapped the V+ box for the V box in the lad's entertainment room, checked everything was up and running before they left, and took me through the main options, including how to set up a wishlist.

All in all, took about an hour, and so far everything appears to be hunky-dory. It will probably take me a while to get used to all the options, and I have to keep checking my daughter is taking all the tuners to record with her US reality show carp*....:D

*I just find out when it is next shown, and change the series link to that.

Don't hold your breath....

It's just a piece of kit, and whilst I am attracted to all things "oooh, shiny", I don't get too excited/upset over small features/niggles (big ones, yes, but others' definition of small/big may differ to mine:D), as, after over 30 years in IT, I don't sweat over the small stuff (and it's mostly small stuff).

Anyhoo, beautiful weather, a week off, my iPad2 arriving sometime next week - I may have other distractions :).

Why not? :)

For some people, the availability of that and other Sky channels, in HD, is a key part of what PVR/platform they sign up with.

Besides, I'm not gonna list all the Sky SD channels not available on VM, I'll be here all day and frankly, most of those channels aren't worth mentioning.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Installation went fine - no problems - very helpful engineer - took less than an hour and all seems to be working well.
Must admit SD picture quality doesn't look as good as the V+ and in my opinion so far HD doesn't either. Nothing bad enough to make me revert to V+ - but noticeable and disappointing all the same.
My main concern so far is that the picture quality on i-player is terrible. Switched HD on, and the picture looks 'zoomed' (edges of picture cut off) and quite blurry/jittery. I've read that other people have this problem - does it improve over time?
Going to keep an eye on things over the next few days. Hopefully won't be any major problems. :D

Have you also downloaded the Sky+ App for iPad? Such a great app imo, highlights some shows that I would miss otherwise & also shows how great the TiVo app for iPad could be! :)

It certainly does work well with TiVo in the sense that it highlights great shows that are on in the next day or so which I may otherwise miss, allowing me to then set my TiVo to record them. :)

Yeah sort of but as my TiVo was only installed on Tuesday, it doesn't know me as well as I know myself yet. :D

It's also much more usable to scroll through the guide and see whats on, tapping on a show presents you with some info about the show and also other similar shows that you might like. This and the Sky News app make great use of the iPad in my opinion.

Absolutely - anyoo, "cool" is for people in their 20's, not for "experienced" people like you and I...

Last time I was cool was when I jumped into an outdoor swimming pool in Shropshire in January 1988; cool? - I was a nearly the owner of a couple of ice cubes!:D

But, Tivo automattically records suggestions. But also has a recommend bar (showcase in your terms) running across the top of the menu screen. Also, Tivo is inteligent and learns your preferences.

The browse TV Menu also gives loads of suggestions of shows browseable by genre.

Are you suggesting the Tivo Tivo's recommends don't work? It's made inteligent suggestions for me and I've only had it 4 days.

Sky leave VM standing on HD content, but Tivo leaves Sky standing on functionality ATM (and you don't need to buy an ipad :D).

SD picture quality , rebooting boxes , intermittent remote record , having to select first run and rerun due to bad EPG data , to long winded to set up series links the list goes on.

And did all the first SKY+ and HD boxes all go without a hitch when they were first released:confused: I think that it is all the same with new tech:)

Exactly! There are long long bug report threads in Sky forums but the posts in them are usually by users who actually own a sky box.

This should be interesting.

I created a Wishlist to record all Sci-Fi movies. Its going to record 2 movies from that Wishlist at 6pm, plus Doctor Who (from a series link) at 6. So, that's 3 tuners in use from 6pm.

I'm watching the live footy game on ESPN now, and beyond 6pm - will TiVo cancel one of my recordings to free up a tuner, or will it ask me if its OK to use my 'ESPN' tuner for one of my recordings?

Guess I'll find out in 25 minutes. :erm::)

Had mine installed Wednesday (He came when I just left for work, cheers wife :)) and so far... WOW!

Been a week of new goodies into the house and the Tivo is now paired up to a 42" LG and the HD is simply awsome. SD is ok in places but then again the I'm getting used to both the new toys.

One thing I've not found an easy way to do, but then again I'm at work "researching" while on my break, is time padding.
V+ had a option to add minutes to all recordings. From what I've done so far, I have to add each one when I set recordings. Am I missing it or is this something we'll have to wait for?
Still, I'm reading/learning alot about the machine.

Oh and the extras next to each show is a gem :D

No you are not missing anything, you have to add padding to each show ( I may stand to be corrected ).

You're correct, at the moment there is no 'global padding' option on TiVo, but its coming soon.

SD Picture quality:

Not as good as V+, but nothing was as good as V+; it stood out for it's upscaling, and frankly, it amazed most people that a box like that could produce such a good SD picture. Remember, upscaling is 'guessing' values for pixels that don't exist!

VM should have kept the same standard, but it still produces a better picture than freview tuners.

I've just watched a recorded episode of Castle (Alibi) and i was very happy with the picture. I was actually impressed with the recording of Justified (five USA) I watched a couple of days ago.

Rebooting:

I've got two Tivo boxes, and neither of them has re-booted.

intermittent remote record :

haven't tried it so can't say.

having to select first run and rerun due to bad EPG data:

This actually doesn't cause a problem because of the '28 day rule'; once it's recorded the episode, it won't record a repeat until 28 days later, so you don't end up with multiple recordings.

I agree the EPG should be correct though and this should be fixed so that you don't need to do this workaround for new episodes. I believe it's mainly US shows as sometimes it's picking up the US first run date?

to long winded to set up series links

I set up over 20 series links the first day i got Tivo, and it was way faster than setting up that number of links on V+. once you know the settings you want, it takes no time at all to go in and change the options to what you want; at least there are options; on V+ there weren't any!

I do think it would be good if Tivo remembered your last settings though; maybe something they will add later?

the list goes on:

What else?

I'd go as far to say that, TiVo actually makes the XL package better value for money.

The combo of Wishlists and Suggestions have revealed content I like on channels which up until now, I hardly watched and barely knew existed. I was aware of the Sci-Fi/Disaster movies on Syfy, but I didn't know they were on channels like Watch or Horror.

As I've stated many times , it has an impressive spec , I'm just saying i'll wait until its a finished item and probably at a lower price , however the channel range will have to vastly improve.

I have just ordered Tivo.

Regarding the soft picture compared to V+...
Are we talking SA V+ or Samsung V+?

I am concerned over the soft picture but I did notice a big drop in SD quality when Virgin changed my SA For Samsung.

So is the comparison largely against the SA..

I have a Panasonic 50" Plasma :erm:

I've only ever had SA V+ boxes, so my comparison is against the SA box.

I've read several reports that the samsung V+ wasn't as good as the SA one at upscaling SD.

Mine is compared to a Samsung V+ and the SD picture is noticably 'softer'. Hopefully VM can do something to improve this situation. Mind you, as I said before, it's not bad enough to make me want to go back to V+

Some people say though that there is absolutely no difference between the Samsung and SA V+ picture quality. There are also those who say they can see no difference between tivo and the V+ or even that the tivo is better. With such diverse opinions I cant help thinking the only way to find out is to try tivo on your tv and make your own judgement.

the great thing about tivo is the clear and detailed EPG data. I set a wishlist for Law and Order, and it not only recorded all episodes across all channels but it discards repeats of the same episode, and gives you a clear idea of the series and episode numbers. Great way to save time and HDD space!

Best bit is when you set the wish list you can actually put it to do HD version only and it actually worked,I really am loving my tivo and for all you doubters as to how good it is shame on you;)

As regards sd picture quality avoid sd channels as i prefer hd but sometimes no choice i personally think its better than my v+ and HD picture defo better

When you set up your wishlist go down to category and it lets you pick HD,Found this whilst playing and it works a treat is actually listed on my box as psychoville*HD i have done the same with torchwood but only put it to record new.
It then chooses the HD version instead of SD

PQ is subjective. Some like it, some don't. Miine rarely re-boots. All of my "new only" SLs are working fine. EPG data has always been occasionally flakey, even with the S1. It's three clicks to set up a basic CL. Hardly "long-winded".
