Do virgin still have a link on their website where if you tell virgin customer service that you want the same deal as new customers you can get it? There used to be a webpage on their site with moving bubbles onscreen.

I'm currently paying £68/month + extra calls for L broadband, XL tv and L phone + some extra phone calls but new customers pay:

"£3.45 for 2 months, then £38.95 a month*"

I'd like XL for tv, broadband and phone and a V+ HD box which works out at:

Just had an email off ESPN saying people need to contact there provider to carry ESPN America HD. Doesn't sound promising.

thats just a standard email reply that is sent to anyone asking for information. its basically saying that its up to your digital tv provider and the more you hassle them the quicker your tv provider may sort out a carrage deal.

its basically diverting the blame from ESPN to VM for not carrying it.

Virgin Media has reported its best ever second quarter results, after adding 9,100 new households to its cable subscription base as revenue reached £964m.

In its financial results for the three months to June 30, Virgin Media beat analyst expectations by actually adding subscribers in Q2 for the first time in over four years.

The cable operator attracted 9,100 new households over the three months, compared to a 27,800 customer loss in the same period a year ago. The strong performance helped Virgin Media to increase its overall revenue by 7.1% to £964m, with growth in all areas, including the mobile business.

Broadband growth was five times that experienced last year, with 28,100 net new customers added over the quarter. Virgin said that 43% of its broadband subscribers now take packages of 20Mbps or 50Mbps.

The company also added 22,300 net new digital television customers, although 3,600 analogue customers were disconnected in line with Virgin Media's plans. More than half of Virgin Media TV customers also regularly use its video on demand platform.

Virgin Media recently announced plans to offer high-definition versions of Sky Sports 1 and 2 on its cable TV platform, along with ten HD variants of the Sky Movies channels.

Over the second quarter, the firm added 295,000 new HD customers - up 79% year on year - to bring its total base to 1.2 million.

The Virgin Mobile business pulled in 66,300 net new customers, with revenue increasing 6.9%. Customers taking a triple-play service of TV, broadband and landline increased to 62.4% and quad-play subscribers (who also take a mobile service) grew to 11.3%.

Churn remained flat at 1.3% and average revenue per user (ARPU) was up 4.9% to a record £45.88.

The company said the operating cashflow was up 12.9% to £370m, representing the third successive quarterly double-digit OCF growth.

After running a successful refinancing programme of its debt, Virgin Media said that it plans to return £700m to shareholders and debt holders.

"A growing base of customers, combined with increased ARPU and improvements in business and mobile revenues, drove strong revenue growth and a double digit year-on-year percentage increase in OCF for the third successive quarter," said Virgin Media chief executive Neil Berkett.

"This performance was driven by our ability to offer households and businesses an increasingly differentiated range of digital services. Going forward, we'll continue to differentiate our propositions by proactively exploiting the advantages of our network and our mobile capability.

"Confidence in our long term ability to deliver strong free cash flow, along with the recent completion of our refinancing, enables us to announce today an initial Capital Return programme that complements our existing debt reduction schedule, without compromising our ability to make further strategic investments in the business."

Virgin Media has also confirmed plans to launch its 100Mbps broadband service by the end of the year, along with its first set top boxes enabled with technology developed by US DVR giant TiVo.

The firm has further announced a trial of aerial broadband deployment via existing electricity poles in the Welsh village of Crumlin as it looks at more ways to expand its fibre network.

i cant decide between the last 2 as they have both been tested on VM at some point in the past. saying that i would gladly give up Sky Arts HD for both of the last 2 lol. plus there is another Sky Movies channel rumoured tyo be launching soon (Sky movies modern Classics HD ???) maybe that is included in the 6 new HD channels MB stated if so the free HD channels options gets cut down to 5.

I'm not vm's biggest fan because they are a joke of a company but I have been praising them lately for the addition of the sky hd channels.

I was just under the impression that tivo was meant to revolutionise tv not just try and link the internet in with it in a pointless way.

Actually that would be kinda cool but do you still have to wear those stupid glasses to view 3d?

Its the future - in 5-10 years maybe 10 years Cable TV, Satellite etc will be streamed via Internet via set-up box or direct lead into TV which allows you to access paid content, internet and video conference etc.

Basically the future is each house/flat/new build with have 1 line that supports all Video/Audio.

The tech is already there - its about bringing it all together, reduce cost and the demand.

VM are in the driving seat.

It does far more then just that, Tivo holds most of the PVR patents as they were first to the market with this type of device. All the things that Virgin can't implement at the moment are due to Tivo aggressively suing companies in court who infringe on their patents.

Anyone who has ever used a Tivo will tell you that it is simply the best type of PVR on the market, not so much in the US any more as they have a far greater choice then we do.

Imagine series links that just work, a EPG that can be updated during the day if needed, auto start times for when a show actually starts, a GUI that is more presentable and intuitive to use. A like feature so Tivo will recommend other types of shows based on ones you have watched or recorded in the past.

Being able to search the EPG via actor, director etc, also makes it search far more flexible. Internet streaming maybe pointless now but more and more sites will appear where you can stream more content although most of that stuff will be PPV I imagine.

I can't see all TV being streamed over the internet for a long time to come it simply isn't economical, via Cable or Satellite you can broadcast to 1 or 1 million people and the cost is the same, over the internet the more people watching a single stream means more bandwidth is required.

I Went on holiday and rented a house in the US which had Verizon Fios TV and they had TIVO hooked up I was pretty impressed with it , the Verizon FIOS internet and TV was good to.

The past year at least they have been extremely successful in what they've set out to do.

For many. many, many reasons.

Latest one for me is they claim I haven't paid my bill even though it's been paid by direct debit and my bank have confirmed I paid it but yet Virgin say I haven't which makes them a joke in my eyes.

But this is a coming soon thread and not a virgin is a joke thread.

Wasn't always this bad, just got bad when it became Virgin Media and I had jacked them in but they signed me up with a new 12 months contract anyway so I am in the middle of seeking legal advice regarding that at the moment.

Can't fault them with the internet though.

Being first to market has no impact on patent activity - it's the filing date with the Patent Office that's important, and it's always best to get it granted in the US. Then you can make pots of money form attacking any entity that infringes on your patent, settling the action, oh and then licensing it's use back to the company again.

I agree with your comments on tivo use though and think it has the potential to change the way in which TV is watched far more than the simple PVR functions we have available today.

Oh and how about VM showing US Patent Office TV HD :D
