Sky and VM did a deal a few months ago for Bravo and Living to appear on Sky Player. What VM get in return, if anything beyond monetary value has yet to be disclosed.

Has anyone noticed that it has all gone quiet on the Sky and VM front.

zantarous 16-04-2010 14:23

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

This quietness is going one of two ways, either something big is going on or Sky are concentrating on the OFCOM ruling.

I sent a letter to ITV reference Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and here's the reply.

Thank you for your email regarding HIGH DEFINITION.

Unfortunately ITV HD viewers do not have access to Dolby Digital 5.1 audio at the moment. However, ITV hope to be able to offer it ‘later this year’.

May I take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to contact us here at ITV.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

Coming Soon - here is what I know, some will be revealed within the First Quarter results/future plan.

Virgin Media TV - no plans for the sale of VM TV or its 50% ownership of UKTV, in fact VM are looking to grow with HD conversion of some of these channels.

Living HD/Sky1 HD - DONE DEAL - a pure swap deal fully expecting some kind of press release in the coming weeks.

Sky HD Pack - VM&Sky have already started to broker a deal for these channels - note these are for Sky's 100% HD channels - Not Joint Ownership HD channels i.e. MGM, Bio etc etc and ?s around the Five HD deal.

Don’t read too much into if the Tories win - The fact that Ofcom has issued the report means neither Labour or the Tories can overturn this ruling, the ruling can only be overturned if Sky take this through the European courts and win.

If the Tories do win and strip all power from Ofcom then that does not mean they can overturn all previous Ofcom rulings made.

The Sky HD pack is expected before the summer

I'm not going to get involved in replying to each post quoting the above - the fact I have a very close and trusted friend within VM.

I will post more if and when I get any other information.

Hopefully with the Ofcom ruling (for Sky Sports anyway) they'll be able to offer something like: pay the same as you do now but get HD; or pay the new lower price for SD only. It would be a good way for Sky to shore up their wholesale margin and good for us too.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

If the above about sky hd channels is true, surely it's sensible for existing sky customers to switch to virgin media... with all of sky hd channels anyway at a price, plus other hd channels for free...as VM Do not currently charge for hd.

this may change as vm get more hd channels, but it's a thought...

dont sky currently charge for all their hd channels, minus the freeview ones

Flyboy 19-04-2010 13:48

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

I believe they charge an extra ten pounds a month for HD, bu customers do get a bigger box than normal Sky+. There many advantages to VM over Sky, but it is not always easy for Sky customers to see. Sky also have some advantages over VM, so I suppose, for many, it depends on what ones priorities are.

Oh and there's no way VM won't charge for HD Sky Premium content. They would surly loose too much money. It might only be a nominla amount for those of us on XXXXXL or whatever they call it these days but it will be there.

I've been following the VM HD developments across these forums for many months and Big Reds 'predictions' (amongst a couple of others only) have all been pretty nailed on.

Iro Sky 1 HD on VM, I dont believe a particular 'go-live' date by forum contributors has ever been mooted? 'Coming soon' from somone who I consider has proved to a reliable source of info is good enough for me.

I think the VM HD service is FINALLY gaining the momentum we've all been (too) patiently waiting for.

I don't see an issue with Sky News HD, okay so far of war zones will still have youtube quality, but most national news, entertainment and sport news will be in nice high quality. Also finally all the onscreen text will be in nice crisp HD.

I was watching District 9 the other day on Blu ray and that the news graphics they used were fantastic qulaity and thought wouldn't that look good on a actual news channel.

And when they show movie trailers we could actually get them in HD.

MrGiles2 / Hiroki, everyone knows that even 'boring rubbish' is better in HD! ;)

I've taken to watching EuroNews on 620 recently as the 'local' news channels have become very parochial, repeatedly covering MPs expenses, education issues and now the election campaigns, leaving little time for anything else.

There have been some very serious events in the UK and worldwide which, on the UK channels, were either not covered at all, made it to the news very late or only made it into one or two bulletins before dropping off the list. Some items were shown on the 'ticker' on BBC News but were never read out.

The initial eruption of the volcano in Iceland and several other serious issues in Europe and elsewhere in the world, failed to make the BBC News for a day or two and, in some cases, not at all. I haven't been checking Sky of late, mostly because I don't like the format anymore.

Admittedly EuroNews has a quirky format but good content with additional little informative pieces. It makes me feel like I'm on holiday! :tu:

Can anyone from the Hackney or Haringey area tell me if BBC Radio London is still broadcasting on Channel 930 or has Virgin move it to channel 937?

In the name of Terry Tibbs, we need "bid-dot-drop-price-dot-uk" HD ;)

If you're thinking what the hell I'm going on about, it's off Facejacker on Channel 4 :)

Is this the start of the changeover? No other changes yet and no message on the live events page yet.

I dunno....i get the feeling with stuff i read that VM and Sky are probably on the brink (or in the middle) of doing an HD deal which will benifit both companies...VM have probably offered just above the Ofcom price for the channels (which will inlude ALL Sports HD not just 1 2 and movies) and we'll see Living etc HD on Sky and Sky HD on VM.... just my feeling i have nothing to back this up with LOL.

Looks like a local fault with your headend, I'm just looking in to this now.

EDIT: We are now investigating this under ref 1245415.

I havent seen anything confirming HD yet, but when driving through my town earlier (nuneaton), there was a massive billboard saying about the election debate on sky news. It was saying it will be on sky news HD, which was coming soon.

It's listed on 930 but tuning to it shows a message "Sorry, this channel isn't available right now. Please wait, or try later" Nothing on 937

That's in the Camden area off Haringey

Just over 50 days to launch an HD Channel?

If the only material they will broadcast at first is the WC, then ITV will supply the stream to them and if they don't have HD play out facilities (which they probably don't) they can get a thrid party to do that. Agreed it is not a lot of time but plenty of ways for them to get it up an running quickly.

Found this on the Freeview website regarding STV HD

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/5893/digiu.jpg

Hope everyone can view this picture okay. Nothing for sure but possibly 15th June launch? Looks like roughly 50 days until launch could be correct. Would be great to see it on Virgin then also

Doesn't that say 2011?

Chad 21-04-2010 23:47

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

Yeah that is 2011. Just noticed the Freeview HD rollout won't be completed in my area until June 2011. That's probably why none of the channels will be available until then. Wish I'd spotted that! The rollout is complete in Glasgow. I'll go back just now and see what HD channels you can expect to receive in the Glasgow post code area, and when STV HD is due.

Okay so I've just checked the Glasgow area which is showing STV HD available March 2010, which is clearly not the case. Sorry about any confussion. I'll take info from Freeview with a pinch of salt from now on.

Will we ever see Sky Sports HD and/or Sky Movies HD on Virgin? With the upcoming 3DTV from Sky, switching is very tempting at the moment. A friend just got the deal of all deals from Sky too.
