No more this week, ESPN HD will launch on Monday, possibly along with Channel 4 HD (C4HD may launch another day next week, or another week, no confirmation). Living HD is set for September, with Eurosport HD and History HD with no confirmed dates but deals have been done with VM.

This is great news.....

Not that this is a problem for me (I am not a huge sports fan) but in response to some other questions. Looks like loads of footy in HD but the american sports are still going to be in SD (but at least it is available)

I am very happy to see ESPN HD coming to Virgin on Monday. It is great addition to XLtv Customs, but I am very disaported about ESPN Amerca disappearing for a couple of months right at the start of the scond half of the Baseball season we are going to miss the play-offs and the world series if ESPN Amercia goes off air. Who watches ESPN Classic any way, really old football match who cares! Come on Virgin just because Sky have a problem with EPG numbers should not mean your Amerca Sports fans should suffer.

Just to clarify with no patronising intended and prefixed with AFAIK ...

To view HD you need a V+ Box and a HD TV connected to it via the HDMI connector.

Even if you have the XL package, as I do, they will be greyed out if you do not have the appropriate hardware to view them.

The HD channels (inc. BBC HD) will show on a V Box but greyed out just like any other unsubscribed channel.

Some viewers, such as Media Boy and ex-TW customers, are having difficulty but that seems to be a more specific problem.

I tried to watch a 40th anniversary moon landing programme a couple of weeks ago and got a 1202 error - the same as the 1202 program alarm they got on Apollo 11. Spooky!

It's not a choice by Virgin.

From what I gather ESPN are going to be showing American sport on ESPN UK until they can run both channels alongside each other on all platforms. It'd be pretty strange of them to run both channels on Virgin whilst they'd be showing the same content on both channels at times until they can get ESPNA back on Sky.

I.e. they will still be showing the baseball on the ESPN channel instead of ESPN america. What happens once ESPN america comes back is another matter, more baseball repeats on that and more football repeats in ESPN I would guess.

ESPN have only had a very limited amount of time to organise this new channel and with limited content at the moment to fill the channel it was clearly decided to just use their existing channel and to fit the American content around the newly acquired football rights.

ESPN did not know if they were going to be able to agree new deals with Sky and Virgin and so probably went with ESPN America as it was available on Sky and Virgin - worst case scenario they continue with their existing agreements and just add new content to the current ESPN America channel with a few tweaks.

I would have thought launching a new channel (even for such a large company like Sky and ESPN) takes a fair amount of time organise.
  • Organising and recruiting employees, presenters, technical, directors etc
  • Acquiring content
  • Agreeing deals with Virgin, Sky and other providers
  • Setting up the uplink to those providers
  • Marketing new channel to customers
  • loads more I imagine

I totally unstead the time and effort it takes to start a new sports channel, Why I like ESPN Amercia is they repeat the Baseball game during the day skipping the adds in between innings it used up less space on the hard drive when recordering. The new ESPN I expect will be show football during the day and live Baseball throught the night.

I've got V+ connected to my SD TV via SCART and I've always been able to watch BBC HD.

Was able to view the new HD channels this morning.

All you get is an info. message saying that it's a HD broadcast being viewed on an SD TV.

The HDTV on the front of the box will remain as the content is being upscaled before being transmitted in HD.

What I'm interested to see the difference between being upscaled before transmission and the V+ upscaling capabilities. In theory the broadcaster upscale stuff should be much better but then the V+ box is excellent at upscalling!

Aargh! As I walked away from the keyboard after posting my summary of HD pre-requisites I realised that I should have said ... to view a HD channel in HD you need ... because a few weeks ago somebody here very kindly answered my question about whether it was possible to view HD channels in SD on an SD TV via a SCART connection to a HD V+ Box. This is great news Mr Spiderplant, but are we never getting More 4+1 back?. Is there a technical reason why it can't return? Plus, what about the ITV+1 channels. I must admit I watch them sometimes and having the +1s on cable would be excellent. Can you please ask the powers-that-be on my behalf, thanks?

Yes Hollyoaks airs in HD, its on now.

Come Dine with me, 8 out of 10 cats, Time time and an odd docu or 2 air in HD. There seems to be no info on the net about schedules for channel4hd showing which shows airing each day are HD which is a real shame:(

simpsons has only started being made in HD this season in america which airs on Sky1 HD, i think channel4's episodes are much older so it will be a long time for that to air on channel4. Ugly betty, E.R and a few other american shows airs in HD on channel4hd too.

I'd rather they got rid of all the existing +1's - so annoying having them clogging up the EPG. V+ and Catch Up OD makes +1s redundant.

I use Digiguide and have just added C4HD to my programme lineup. In their descriptions they say if a programme is in High Definition or not.

You can download a demo of digiguide - but if you give me a specific day I will PM you with the schedual for that day.

No it doesn't.

1: How do I record something from catch-up TV?

2: Not all channels with a +1 version are available on catch-up TV.

1. Why would you need to? You'd just watch it.

2. True, but that's where the V+ comes in.

4 things at the same time? How often does that happen (if ever?!?!) You'd have to be a very heavy tv user.

I agree. Things are repeated so frequently that it would have to be a rare set of events that occurred to make it essential that you had to view all of them in a short space of time.

In which case why have a video recorder of any type if you could "just watch it"? I often record programmes to watch at a later time when there's nothing on that I want to watch.

Not really. There have been quite a few times that there's been several things on at the same time that I want to record. Being able to us the +1 channels is very useful.

Just because you don't watch them doesn't mean they shouldn't be there. There are plenty of channels on the EPG that I never watch, doesn't mean I think they should get rid of them. If it's that much of a problem for you then why don't you just use the favourites list? Then you won't have to see all the +1 channels "clogging up the EPG".

It's not that much of a problem for me. I just said I would prefer it if there were none rather than having even more. Just my personal opinion. Touchy. Sorry.

I'm perfectly chilled, it's just getting a bit repetative with everyone asking the same questions, when they're readily available in this thread and others, and other websites.

I apologise.

It depends on the tv show itself, lots of archive footage are in national geo documentaries and lots of older documentaries a few years ago were recorded in 720p so they look ok but not great. New documentaries look very good, if you watch a few mins of Helicopter Wars @ 11pm you will see that new documentaries look very nice indeed.

I'm no expert, but the pixellation sounds like a signal issue. I expect VM are using frequencies they've never used before (for digital, anyway) and with the best will in the world they can't make sure that they're receivable, without changes, at the millions of ends of many thousands of miles of cable.

I'd say call VM - it could be a simple fix like boosting your power.

hth,
Sam

Cinema yes in the home no. This will flop for 2 main reasons.

1. Current finances for the majority of people
2. Having just getting the public to buy HDTV its to early to push a new tech involving big expense

So basically wrong time for this. I don't fancy having to have 3d glasses all over the show. For me anyway 3d is for going out to not an everyday thing

acutally the 3d tv means you dnt need glasses, i have seen some tests of it basically the telly does the 3d part but it still quite poor it will be a good 5-10 years before ti ready so i agree it will fail but not because of glasses :)

I tend to agree, in the present financial climate, even next year, embarking on a new technology of this magnitude does seem to me a little premature.
HD is still in its infancy in the UK and the vast majority don't even have that at present, so apart from a few "must have techies" I don't see Sky's customer base rushing out to buy 3D-TV's, which as none are even avaliable at present I imagine will cost an arm and a leg when they are in the shops.
Could it be this announcement today by Sky was their way of putting the mockers on VM's free HD channel launch today.;)
