Yup, this would be the sensible thing to do. As I understand it, the infrastructure is place should a deal be finalised for the channels to become immediately available.

Once the opening night has passed, it's no big deal to many people until 17 August, so I can see VM not wanting to pay any substantial amount during the intervening period. The only reason VM will want it after today until 17 August is to provide an assurance to customer that the channels are available on the platform (or to stagger subscription processing, especially if it transpires that it will be sold as a standalone package).

VM will also know (but don't want to shout about) the unencrypted opening night on Freeview that many (most?) VM customers will have access to, meaning that most who want to really watch it will be able to do so.

New TV's will have Freeview tuners and many pay TV customers use Freeview on secondary sets in the home.

sorry wrong conference starts 10 august not all waiting for the rubbish premier. I like football but no time and space for those who destroyed the game in england.

Others have other interests and others sports may miss.

If vm think this way then its naive and stupid.

There is more than just the Premier league that is on BT sport. So waiting for the cheapest price until 17th august is a joke now. I personally prefer UFC to Football and so it looks like I am supposed to miss out on UFC 163 on Saturday because Virgin are tight arses. I think I will just watch a stream online and wait until my contract is up and leave.

Just turned to ESPN (I forget the number for eurosport) and I received 30 seconds of ESPN before the slate came up. The picture had no sound but the DOG was visible in the corner saying ESPN HD. So the feed is still getting to Virgin, they are just blocking it with the slate?

As I understand it, BT Sports will soon become available in southern Ireland on the Liberty Global owned UPC cable network.

It will be in the Setanta pack- and therein lies the difference. I imagine that BT will be dealing with Setanta as a third party and not UPC (and more importantly, not have access to their customer details).

This means that UPC don't have to open up their network to 3rd parties.

Perhaps this could be a solution for the VM situation if XL talks fail to achieve a resolution. ie route standalone BT subscriptions via a standalone (preferably sports) channel eg Boxnation*.

* Boxnation is currently wholesaled by VM and then retailed to VM customers, but I'd hope arrangements could be made to facilitate this if necessary.

BT will then only receive data about VM Boxnation customers.

As Boxnation is about to launch an HD variant and BT are tipped to buy Boxnation, this might offer a solution.

I'm sure both negotiating teams are exploring every avenue to reach a suitable arrangement for both parties :)

agreed. it's the same ludicrous, sick bucket inducing guff as people who say a Nurse or Soldier should be paid £200,000 a week because a footballer is. Nurses and Soldiers aren't professional entertainers within a commercial industry that generates billions so they shouldn't earn £200k a week. if they were, then they would.

personally watching Merseyside Derby on BT Sport means more than life and death to me. it's not my problem to deal with wars and famine, and the political unrest in Afghanistan, it doesn't affect my daily life in any way shape or form. so I don't care.

I'm sure you're right, it would be sensible to keep the feed going whilst negotiations are still taking place to resume transmission :)

Edit: Just had a thought, if VM take their ESPN feed from satellite, then what you spotted is a good sign.

AFAIK when ESPN officially changed hands, the satellite feed changed.

This would mean that VM have reconfigured their satellite receiving equipment to receive the "new" ESPN.

That's good news. Have Virgin made an official announcement about this on Twitter, Facebook or the Virgin Community forum? Would be good to have a link for others to see if they want to cancel too.

That actually made me laugh.... Have they made an official announcement about ANYTHING????? The short answer though, is no. But I have now that information from them twice, in separate calls.
