I don't really see the major problem with this and think it's all just a symptom of impatience. Nothing wrong with that but no point in getting too upset and trying to make the cableco out as being incompetent for not giving an exact date for each area, especially as areas may be done in sections so it'd just create more grief as one person in RG12 has upgrade but another person in RG12 doesn't as they connect to different bits of kit at ntl one of which has had the settings changed and another which hasn't. ntl are likely to roll this out in phases to each area anyway just to monitor the impact on the networks of the upgrades and make sure that it's around the levels they were expecting. Something ntl don't want to do is to open the taps and have everyone get just a trickle as there's not enough capacity there. In some areas I expect also the upgrades are pending capacity increases and as soon as the capacity upgrades are done so the tier upgrades can happen. To promise a date on these then have the capacity upgrade fail for any one of the number of reasons a resegmentation can fail and delay would cause more complaints than being vague. |
Re: New Speeds - June 1st
Some fair points there I have to say...
oooh am I sitting on the fense or what!? Might try sitting on the modem for a while, see if that helps. |

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
OK, just an update from me..
I rang CS and was told if I upgraded from 1mb to 2mb I would get 4mb, not 2mb.. I told her I hadnt heard of anybody getting their upgrade to 4mb yet, but she insisted she had the option to make the modem either 2mb or 4mb.. I went ahead with the upgrade, and needless to say, I am now getting 2mb, not 4mb as promised. But atleast she gave me 1 month free (for the upgrade, £7), so I guess thats something.. |

Re: New Speeds - June 1st
Out of interest what physically takes place during a roll out of upgrades such as the one we are all sitting back and patiently waiting for at the moment?
Im not talking about massive details, im just interested as to how it all happens? Anyone? |
Re: New Speeds - June 1st
I might be wrong, but physically, not a lot, somebody hits a button which TFTPs new config files to the modems in a certain area, they check to see if there are any problems, if not roll onto the next area.

DHCP servers are then changed to point to a new modem config file for 2Mbit customers, then modems are disconnected from the network. When they reconnect they either pick up the new file with its' corresponding uBR profile already ready as above and there ya go. Slightly simplified but that'll do ya. |
