Well I've decided to keep the FTTC line as a backup and it's going on SSE's £21 a month deal. Much better than the money BT want. And Virgin Will take main connection status for now.

I am impressed I must admit.

I got this installed earlier this week. I work from home 2-3 days a week and I do a lot of heavy data moves of GIS material which my internal system at work can't handle efficiently.

Download is steady at around 310Mb during working hours, dips a bit in the evening but that's no big deal as I'm off the clock by then. The uploads are at about 15Mb, a little lower than I'd hoped but personally that's not a big deal as my data uploads just chunter away in the background and I'm not a gamer.

Overall I'm pretty happy as my work has offered to pay for 50% of my broadband costs so I'm actually a little better off now.

Yes. Repeatedly proven.

To be fair to VM though you could remove them from that statement and replace it with 'cable'.

Only time I've had jitter that matched xDSL was when I was the only person on the cable segment. Yes really. First person on my hub on DOCSIS 3.0 so sharing the bandwidth with no-one. The jitter and latency were flawless :)

Yeah I remember those days back in 2013. When everybody else was on BT or Sky in my area with ADSL.

In which case I would switch to the 300 business service - which is £80 or £40 to you (cheaper than the homeworks) and you get better service levels I believe.

So you get to be even better better off :)

Standalone Homeworks + 300Mbps is £57.24. If you have broadband with other services it would be cheaper in the bundle deal.

yup and Business 300mbps is £80 so he would pay £40 personally. Not sure if that is better apart from the STM outside of working hours.

Personally, I would like the 300 meg connection, but I object to paying for all the unnecessary crap (for me anyway) that comes with it.

I don't need tech support for all my devices. If they go wrong, I fix them. I don't need advice on security, as I stay up to date on security as part of my job. As for configuring your network for optimum efficiency, unless you change something physically (like building layout), shouldn't that only need to be done once? And it's not as if your average home user is going to need a particularly complicated setup with multiple vlans, subnets and complicated routing setups.

F secure SAFE? Avast does much the same for free..

F secure key? You can buy a subscription for 50 euros for two years. or buy 1Password for 1 person for £44.21

The deal with GoDaddy is only really worth it if you need to run your own website and email servers. A lot of people who work from home for other companies won't need that (I don't when I work from home), and the money off only lasts 1 year.

Hello everyone, i'm slightly confused, is the price for the 300mbit line an extra £13.99 or £22.98? i tried asking on the live chat but was told i needed to phone.

EDIT: I spoke to virgin again and was told it's £22.98 but after reminding them it say's £13.99 quid on there site they then agreed it costs that amount but said my bill would be £63.24 but i will get a £6 discount so it will cost me £57.24, i still feel like there trying to scam me

I'm paying £57 for homeworks and after 12 months it will go up to £63 unless you cancel or downgrade of course.

So £57 is about right and some others on here are paying the same.

Re: Virgin Media Homeworks 300Mb

How do most of you rate the 300mbit connection? i only seem to hit that speed when i pick the virgin servers on speedtest.net but downloading games on steam/origin/uplay/battle i might hit 290 for a second then slow down really fast and sit stable around 250mbit.

I've tried other methods of downloading popular files and its the same, i get around 30-31MB which is around 250mbit

Re: Virgin Media Homeworks 300Mb

On origin and steam i sit around 313 most of the time regardless of time of day speedtest i get 314.

I'll try and download a few games tonight, in the morning and tomorrow night and see what speeds i get but i did reinstall a few and was lucky to be over 260 for more than 2 seconds, usually says peak was 30MB

It's also effected by hard drive speed.
