Sorry my reply is a bit late but I don't think seeing the first movie is a requirement. The story isnt over the top complicated though you may struggle a little trying to work out who is who especially with the decepticons as they all look very alike in roboform.

So long as Transformers 2 features the following, I'll be happy:

1) Giant robots fighting other giant robots

2) Giant robots blowing crap up

3) Megan Fox looking hot

On that note, I re-watched the first this afternoon. It ticked all three boxes & I give it 8.5/10.

Red Dragon

OK, so it's not as good as The Silence of the Lambs, but it's still a decent serial-killer thriller, and Hopkins is of course on top form as Lecter.

Rat Race

Very silly, tried too hard a lot of the time but raised a few chuckles nonetheless. The sequence with the jewish family in Hitler's Mercedes is excellent.

Psychotic scourned girlfriend flying a helicopter scene not appeal to you then?? :D

Chris 24-06-2009 12:06

re: Rate the last movie you saw

It was pretty good, but it's also a good example of the film trying too hard to be funny. The situation itself was very comic, psycho-girlfriend overacting her way through it only made it look like the director lacked confidence in his script. As if he was saying, "look folks! This is funny! Laugh, now!"

Russ 24-06-2009 12:13

re: Rate the last movie you saw

I agree, with a cast like that it should have been a classic, clearly an attempt at a Cannonball Run style remake. To be honest had it not been for John Cleese (or rather his very impressive teeth) I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it so much. But you can tell the director wasn't aiming for an Oscar.

Tezcatlipoca 25-06-2009 01:28

re: Rate the last movie you saw

The Silence of the Lambs

Nearly 20 years old, & still one of the best ever thrillers made IMO. A classic.

10/10

It's a few years since I last watched it, so it was rather odd seeing the actor I now know more as Monk's Captain Stottlemeyer playing "Buffalo Bill"...

Great cast all round, but Foster & Hopkins were superb, & certainly deserved their Oscars (and I think it also won Best Picture & Best Director too).

Quick question to those who have watched Transformers 2. It is a 12A which means I can take someone under 12 to wath it. Is the film suitable for a 5 year old?

I don't think I would recommend it for someone that young. There is a small amount of foul language in the movie along with all the violence.

You are probably too young to understand or get the movie. I honestly cried when I saw this in the cinema, a very moving and really well made movie. Nothing boring about it.

Just watched Ghostbusters 2 again. Still not as good as the first one but all together pretty funny and entertaining. 7/10

Ditto. First time in years that a movie made me cry. I found it very upsetting when Mrs D & I went to see it. Felt like a wreck at the end, and had to have a few ciggies afterwards (this was back before the current "non-smoking" drive).

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 8/10

I seem to prefer this film on TV than at the cinema, I seem to remember seeing it at the cinema and finding it a bit dull, but at home I don't, maybe 'cos I can pause it, get up, go to the loo, get a drink etc. We'll watch the others over the next couple of weeks ready to see the new one at the cinema

Harry Potter and that Chamber of Secrets 7/10

This was the one that I found dull, not the first one, I remember then being annoyed as it put me off seeing the next one at the cinema which was better than 1 or 2. Looking forward to 4 again.

Actually, I may enjoy the films more this time round as I haven't read the books (I've read them all) in so long, so I can't remember the differences.

We watched Transfomers on DVD again during the week, to remind ourselves what happened in the first one :) Still enjoyed it, although as I think I said to my missus a couple of minutes into watching it at home last time said " I think we need a bigger tele" (we have a 28" CRT widescreen)

9/10

However last night we saw Transformers 2, I was disappointed.
The SFX were clearly amazing, but as a film it reminded me of the bad Simpsons episodes of recent years. i.e. the writers have thought of a few scenes that they want to happen, and then tried to put some extra bits in between, and just tried to keep the action up so we didn't notice it was all a bit of a mess.

I also thought it was trying too much to be a kids film, with the annoying twin robots, the parents (I liked them in the first film, but they seemed annoying and unnecessary in this one), and other attempts at humour and it was too long :(

At least we got to see the Bruno and Harry Potter trailers again :)

Def thought Terminator Salvation was better for switch off brain and enjoy robots fighting action :)

but Tranformers is a kids film! I grew up with it in the 80's. So even though they will be satisfiying us at heart it's for the kids of today to enjoy.

Public Enemies 6/10 was ok but don't really like the style of filming the Michael Mann has.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince 5/10, really not impressed as usual (for HP movies ayway) the director seem to have convieniently forgotten that it's part of a series and just gone down the 'What I want to do' route.

Specific issues below.

Spoiler:

Missing what should have been a great fight at the end.

WTF happen at the barrow half way through???

Was it me or did it feel like they tacked Dumbledors death on at the end? its supposed to be an epic death scene FFS!

Far too much concentration on who's snogging who and not enough eye's on the plot IMO.

It's not an action film and it does deviate from the book but it was still a good film, imo.
I think Ginny & Hermione stood out in the film, although Draco and young Tom were pretty convincing.

yes - a bit shocking about the burrow - are they going to have rebuilt it for Deathly Hallows?

Just watched Push 8.5/10 Pretty good film and the ending leaves it open for another. Very X-men'esque, its a shame that some people have slated it on reviews elsewhere as its a great Saturday afternoon\evening film. The acting is quite good and Dakota Fanning plays here part superbly.

I did really enjoy it and yes many sub plots were missing, but as this like many other films is only 'based' on the book then they did a good job of keeping the best and important parts. It was still a 2.5 hour movie so keeping anything ese would have been too much.

The Day After Tomorrow

DEVASTATION!/10

After the crappy Godzilla & Patriot, Roland Emmerich returned to do another big-budget disaster movie a la ID4, this time featuring Mother Nature laying waste to civilisation, rather than aliens in gigantic saucer ships.

Nonsense of course, but enjoyable nonsense with spectacular scenes of destruction across the globe.

Quie a few sections of the book missing but not really that essential for the storyline. Some people might be disappointed as it doesn't follow true to the earlier films but you have to remember that this book was the transition between Harry being awkward schoolboy and the Wizard who has to fight the final battle. Can't wait for the two HP7 films

Taxidermia - ?/10 - dunno if it was good in an interesting way or crap or just unwatchable. It's like Terry Gilliam with a bit of HC Porn and some Real? Animal killing and an insane plot. I dunno what to make of it. Yes you will have to Torrent it, it is two years old and only just getting a release, doubt it will show at any major multiplex.

Nah I have been off all week and watched loads of films. But seen most of them before so not really a last film you saw. Got a Blue Ray player as well.

Kingdom Of Heaven (Dir Cut) BR
300 BR
The Thing BR
Watchmen (Dir Cut) BR (Bloody region coding, I thought they outgrew that, just cost me £300 for a chipped BR player)
54
Alien
Star Wars
Stoned
Manhattan
Clue
Pieces
Cat and the Canary (Love this film) this is the 70's version
Some Carry On Films....

Whole bunch of others I can't remember. Your not alone in watching films ;)

I have that Watchmen Motion Comic, also have the Black Freighter as well.

The one in the original version was better.

Yup, I preferred the Theatrical ending.

Sorry, it became a challenge to remember what I just wasted 9 days doing.......

Top Secret
Massacre At Central High (Don't knock it, even Ebert liked it)
Caddyshack
Apocalypse Now (Redux)
Carwash

I have too many films and not enough time.

---------- Post added at 22:39 ---------- Previous post was at 22:30 ----------

BTW, all these are bought, so in mind they are all 7/10 - 10/10 or I wouldn't bother.

I watched Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire last night, and Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix this evening, as a refresher before seeing the new one next week.

Didn't bother watching 1-3 too as I've seen them plenty of times, but I don't think I've actually watched 4 or 5 since seeing them at the cinema.

Very good, IMO, despite them both missing bits from the books.

Antichrist 2/10 what a load of nonsense!!! shocking in places but overall just rubbish.

The Proposal 7/10 really funny and stars Sandra Bullock :):) I'm instantly happy

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

8/10

Been a while since I read the book, so I can't remember how much has been left out, but I really enjoyed it.

8.5/10
They seem to have missed the scene setting first chapter and emphasized Dubledore's illness, but othewise pretty good and the last main scene was true to the book.

Anchorman

Second time watching it and it was a chore. Unfunny and just terrible.

The missus and I haven't read the book since a month or so after the hard back edition came out. We thoroughly enjoyed the film. thought it had the right balance of humour, and then dark when it needed to be :)

Highlander (BD)

A classic.

There can be only one... [just a pity that didn't apply to the movie]

Mississippi Burning (Sky+)

Powerful stuff, with a top-notch cast.

The Taking of Pelham 123....7 /10.
Knowing....7/10
Transformers 2....7/10

I see a pattern emerging.
I think i need to stop having Internet enabled devices around when watching movies. They never seem quite as interesting.

Che part 1. Really annoying the way it skips from the 'present' to the past a lot. The action is repeatative (but I suppose war is isn't it), and it does drag on a bit, and oh my God, there's part 2 yet... It was OK though 6/10

Well it is really about his life. A very interesting life at that.

GI Joe - 4/10 - pure popcorn movie, but too many cliches for my liking (and I usually like films like this)

Mutant Chronicles - 3/10 - unrelentlessly bleak

My Name is Bruce

Missus and I just watched it, we both enjoyed it, laughed out loud a bit, but I'm sure that was at the obvious references we got.

The film has mixed reviews, but (trying to avoid spoilers) that's to be expected as it's more or less aimed at Bruce Campbell's fans rather than "average Joe".

Glad we watched it, for £5 on DVD it's good, but saying that, glad we didn't spend £15 - £20 for the pair of us to see it at the cinema.

As most ppl say, for the serious Bruce fans only, so it's hard to score out of 10!

6/10, more or if you're a die hard fan, less if you're reading this thinking Bruce Who ? ;)

Inglourious Basterds 10/10

Absolutely brilliant film, which happens to be a Tarantino film, for a lot of it isn't obvious it's one of his films, but now and again it is, probably the funnier parts :)

A word of warning, if you don't like "foreign films" you may not like it, a lot more subtitles than I was expecting (but then I wasn't expecting any). I deliberately haven't read anything about it.

District 9 - 8/10

Such an excellent film. It's directed and written by Neill Blomkamp who was set to direct the Halo movie.

This was made because Peter Jackson thought that he should help him out with making another film, so he earned $30m for the budget. The lead is excellent in his role too, especially for his first acting job. I truely recommend it to anyone.

Odd ending, but otherwise quite watchable.

Liverpool gangster flick, well done like most British gangster films.

The best thing about watching GI was watching it in gold class. Huge fully reclining lazy boy sofas and waiters to bring over my caramel popcorn and drinks. The film itself, also 4 out of 10, exactly for the reasons above.

What's gold class?

I saw the film in a cinema in Dubai. My brother in law bought the tickets. Its basically a cinema with 50 lazy boy sofas arranged in pairs. You order your food before you go in, its bought to you by a waiter, you can also get his attention throughout the film. Each lazy boy has enough room around it to fully recline. Personally, i thought it was a bit OTT as well as a waste of money as the tickets are quite expensive.

The Hangover - 6/10. Not the ball-burstingly-funny film people made it out to be sadly. OK it had it's pretty good moments but the hype passed me by. Although Mike Tyson was excellent, not a bad actor for his scenes :D

I think that's the difference between our scores - I went to it with low expectations (another Will Farrell/Seth Rogan type film), and was pleasantly surprised that it was (imho) much better than that. :)
