That's why I was somewhat puzzled by your suggestion that there were no signs of HD being available. My understanding of Boxnation HD on Sky is that it is a part time channel, doubling up as Boxnation's PPV events channel.

The downside is it won't be available in SD and in all probability on Virgin will only be available to TiVo/V6 customers whether buying on PPV or an existing subscriber.
Or it could, perhaps, be made available to existing subscribers with a little extra coding, as I originally suggested. Time will tell...

Do you think they'll downscale the HD feed for SD subscribers or just extend compatibility to other MPEG4 HD boxes?

No, it's an incentive for SD subscribers to upgrade, so that wouldn't be a good move.

I was thinking of the method of accessing the NVOD H.264 video stream. Perhaps a red button for Boxnation subscribers rather than channel zero or the Tivo events menu.

Maybe I'll take a look at the "ITV PPV HD" pack flags nearer the time, if scan data is available.

If legally possible, I think that this could be a reasonable workaround for Ch 103 in the (unlikely) event that ITV is removed from the platform.

Boxnation HD only broadcasts 1-2 programmes a week at present - it is NOT a copy of the regular Boxnation channel.

Subscribers to Boxnation HD just seem the Boxnation logo at all other times - which is most of the time.

So if the Boxnation logo is being seen testing in HD - that could be the full channel.

I wonder why? You'd think that they would add it to their own apps on TiVo! As it stands, it appears to be only for external devices.

Perhaps the content is already available in some other place on the V6?

Further info:

Rishtey Cineplex is testing on EPG slot 828, flagged as "Entertainment", presumably that will be changed to "International" before launch, in line with other channels in that section of the 800s. It has pack flags for Mix, M+, L/Fun & XL/Full House. Scan data indicated that video and audio streams have been rolled out across the national network.

Looks like it's now VM policy to deny customers any new launches on the M/Player packs. I think that this channel has now gone behind a paywall, but they are even doing this to channels on Freeview!

Each to their own I say. If there wasn't demand the broadcasters wouldn't do it. Pretty sure BARB ratings rise for these channels when they switch to Christmas movies.
There are plenty of other film channels to watch instead.

There's been a claim that GOLD advertised themselves as being on Freeview this morning:

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...5#post35915415

Did anyone else see or record this or does anyone else know anything about this?

If correct, I wonder if VM will move it down to the M/Player packs. Doubt it, they will probably move it down to M+/Mix if it isn't in these already.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

That's true.

People tend to argue that it does well as a subscription channel, so there's no incentive for UKTV to make it FTA.

On the other hand, people have also said that it's a shadow of its former self and that a lot of its content is now duplicated on other FTA UKTV channels eg it's comedy programmes on Yesterday!

If this advert did appear, I wonder if it was shown early in error. This would give us an indication that it will come to Freeview at some point (unless it's already on Freeview, I can't check as my aerial is out of action).

As of yesterday GOLD was NOT on MB HQ's Freeview HD Box.

We have look around at our web sources on Freeview and seen at GOLD has not launched today on Freeview.

It sounds like it was the Freeview ad rather than Gold advertising its presence on Freeeview. But why would the Freeview ad addressing Freeview customers appear on Gold? Possibly just an error.

Possibly a change in the NIT linkage section on your regional VM network, these things happen fairly often but as they relate to maintenance, updates etc for VM equipment rather than changes to the broadcast infrastructure, it isn't something routinely tracked in the scan data.

The service list and frequency lists didn't change and there were no changes to the relative sizes of the NIT and SDT tables, so nothing major.

Price going up 3.99!!! What on earth???! Has anyone worked out the price rises over the last 18 months? Must be near 20 quid?!

Really makes things difficult for me as to what to do. Need to have a think. If they put prices up by a quid a year it would be okay. But this is getting out of hand. Email complaint coming up i think

Yes, it's annoying when that happens. It happened a few times when I was recording a series aired overnight, on the second Tivo, there were a few gaps where the box had rebooted.

Are you comparing this situation with that of the V+, which needed a forced reboot when the service list changed? Tivo's generally handle that sort of thing without a forced reboot.

That's right, and if the cost remains too high, remember there are other ways to access the TV channels you want. Sky channels through Now TV; Freeview channels either with a Freeview Recorder, Freesat or you can access through TV Player; lifestyle and reality through Hayu; Amazon Channels with Amazon Prime; and of course Netflix.

It does not take long to work out how to access the material you actually want and maybe more for a rather lower price than you are paying now.

Even if Virgin Media kept the headline speeds the same, data usage is increasing significantly year on year, so there would still be the need to invest in network capacity.

DOCSIS 3.1 can go much faster than current VM speeds and there are other developments such as DOCSIS 3.1 Full Duplex. The future path adopted by VM remains to be seen but there's no reason why they should be left behind.

Quite a while a quite a few more price increases ahead to keep up. ;)

There's not much point taking the highest speed if all of the customer equipment on the network is connected by wi-fi at low speed. Most of my equipment connects on 5GHz channels at relatively high speed. Generally at speeds above the broadband rate. Having said that, I don't use the superhub for wi-fi.

VM provides a good, fast broadband service in my experience, but the upload speeds suck. I'm on VIVID 200 which means 12Mbps upload, so my cloud backups take days. I'd be most interested if I could get Hyperoptic's fibre 100Mbps (it's the same speed both down and up).

Hopefully it's a simple fix like that.

I'm guessing there will be no UHD on-demand films if I have to lower the resolution lol

Hopefully it's a simple fix like that.

I'm guessing there will be no UHD on-demand films if I have to lower the resolution lol

I was told that they take all suggestions from customers on board, there is no plans at the moment for uhd movies on demand but to keep an eye out for it in the future scary

I changed the display settings and the link worked. It was just a trailer to the new virgin media store, nothing special lol

When you see buy now in discovery bar it should take you to a app instead of a video and no UHD

News reports say that the channel has been pulled from the air, but it's still broadcasting.

I imagine that to keep their SD slot on Sky alive (as a valuable asset) the administrators will keep it going up until this is sold.

As a consequence, I guess this is why Bike are continuing to honour their contractual agreement with VM until the plug is pulled.

They can stay on air for little cost if they 'recycle' old programs.

They tried to find a buyer, but not for very long. You're right though, I suppose if someone put in an offer it could continue

That's what most channels in this position do, they show any old stuff that meets Skys requirements to keep the valuable SD slot alive.

Was "staying on air" a deliberate pun :D

As of Friday an DNP order has been removed.

Now down to three.

Are they only removed once they have been made public knowledge?
The news about the media store came out before Friday, didn't it?

Nothing unusual there. NVOD PPV Event service PMT & Elementary Streams (video, audio etc.) are usually removed when not in use. The SD NVOD PPV Event services, SID 713 - Sky Events & SID 2009 - Prime Events are also inactive at the moment. (They all remain in the NIT and SDT for future use.)

I'm not calling anything unusual. As you are well aware these things change ahead of PPV events. Any indication of how Virgin are handling the fight would be interesting though.

If any boxing fans are interested I'm team #GGG.

Of course, they change ahead of PPV events in so far as the elementary streams of individual services are activated for the duration of the event. I was simply stating that it is normal for services "not currently in use" to have their ES streams removed. CITV ES streams are removed each evening for example. Also the Hidden BT HD ES streams are currently inactive but are left defined in the NIT / SDT tables for future use.

VM pretty much use the PPV NVOD services as they see fit for each event. The defined services are basically "PPV Event SD 1", "PPV Event SD 2" and "PPV Event HD". As you already know, the SDT defined names of "Sky Events", "Prime Events" and "ITV PPV HD" are largely meaningless as they can be used for any PPV Event.

jj20x 12-09-2017 01:52

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2017)

Recent changes to Virgin Media services:

TSID 15 SID 1517 "Xrated Couples" has been replaced by "TVXPornstars" although the slate on EPG channel 975 is still showing the "Oops! We are currently experiencing difficulties..." message.

TSID 15 SID 1503 "RedHot XXX" the actual NVOD PPN service associated with the above channel has also been replaced by "TVXPornstars". (The service name wasn't updated for this NVOD channel at the last change of service.)

The SDT has been changed to remove the overnight "Channel Off Air" slate from channel 724 "Disney Channel". Disney Channel & Disney Channel +1 are now operating a 24/7 service. (Disney Channel +1 didn't use the Off Air Slate).

Good material, but very expensive. However, if they are normal commercial prices, I guess we can't expect any more - Virgin cannot provide these shows at a loss.

True upto a point, but surely that should be included in what some might call "standard growth"? The mobile networks are generally limited to inflation-% rises.

Bike TV has just been removed from Freesat and Sky, can't be long until VM lose the feed that they are currently showing.

Their website and face page were deleted the other day too, yet they were still advertising them on the channel!

Bike TV is no broadcasting any Pictures on Virgin Channel 552.

Just need Virgin Media to put up the "channel no longer broadcasting" sign.
