For vm i think btsports 1+2 will remain in the XL pack with btsport3 being available for £5p/m extra, btsport3 will have champions league matches,BT sports extra or showcase will be available in all packs for free this will have the fta matches on this is just my thoughts.

We have seen the following new BT Sports names doing the rounds:

-Digital Spy say ESPN will soon be rebrand as BT Sport ESPN.
-Smooth Radio is running an ad for an "New Home of European Football" BT Sport Europe.

Good question Den , I personally think VM will negotiate a deal to include the Champions League for XL subscribers but I suppose it could go anyway. I think BT see Sky and Talk Talk as the big competitors as both operate on the Openreach network meaning its easier for customers to move phone and broadband.

BT in my opinion would receive low viewing figures if every platform is forced to pay the additional £5 a month. As I say all guesswork on my behalf.

I have to agree with you MM...we haven't seen much happening from VM this year, maybe their plan was to make sure the football stays in the XL package... I hope so anyway :)

By bill has gone up 9 odd quid so the five quid for the champions league and 4 quid for costs of the network extra... Fair deal!

Undoubtedly though we won't hear anything until the last minute and the new cheap cost cutting and profit increasing virgin media will strike again!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015)

Who knows, perhaps they won't pay BT the subs anymore. Perhaps they will pay for Atlantic instead? BT TV is reasonably attractive (provided you don't care about the Sky branded channels, which are poor IMO) in comparison to VM. I think it's about time VM gave non-sports fans something back in the XL package.
That being said, I would always prefer free sport but it's not right that non-sports fans continue to "pay" for a service they don't watch.

Well said Harry.

It doesn't affect me these days, but it did for all those years that I did have XL.

international European qualifiers to add to that list. They didn't have a lot on there and filled it with skysports news for x amount of hours.

I suppose the real reason for SS5 is purely commercial to say you get 7 channels as this could of all been done via red button (although I'm sure some people in the know will politely inform that it's probably simpler to add a channel than add red button channels)

I'd agree with you muppetman as I think VM XL subscribers are a safe guaranteed income for BT that they need to recoup some of their outlay on footy rights and VM aren't really seen as the main competition.

If the earlier quoted XL subscriber figure of 1.8 million is correct then VM could say to BT we'll give you £1 a month for every XL subscriber for BT Europe which would mean a tidy £1.8m a month for BT.

If the decide to go it alone and ask for a subscription of £5 per month for BT Europe, they'd need 360,000 subscribers on VM to make the same £1.8m.

I think BT have vastly overpaid for the Champions League as I don't believe it's as big of a draw as they think it is. It got plenty of viewers before as it was either free on ITV or included with Sky Sports subs.

To market it as a standalone product is a different kettle of fish and I think they may struggle to recoup their outlay. This is what makes me agree with muppetman as I think BT will play it safe and strike a deal with VM to be included in XL.

So do that mean if you already subscribe to BT Sports on Sky you'll get the CL included and the £5 is for the standalone BT Europe channel for people who don't already pay the £12/£15?

If i understand it right? If true then that is pretty good.

It's because if you sub to BT Sport on Sky without BT Broadband it's £13.50 or £16.50 with HD as opposed to BT Broadband subs who get SD free or pay £3 for HD.

I would imagine the £5p/m for bt sport europe will apply to plusnet customers too in time, vm are going to have to pull something out of the hat here as i can't see bt agreeing to it being in xl pack they might offer it at a reduced rate for xl customers but i feel it will be £5p/m extra.

The advert I saw the other night suggested that ESPN has now become 'part of the BT Sport family' and that there will be more content (background pictures showed college football).

http://www.btplc.com/news/articles/s...4a829925ea7%7D

The link shows that BT Sport and ESPN extended their current deal for another 7 years back in January, and suggests that some more shows will be on. It would appear that some of these programs are those that used to be on ESPN America, like PTI.

Today at angea trade event in Germany, VU+ a Korean manufacturer of innovative satellite and cable boxes have just showcased their new 4k set top box, set for release end of August and usually when a Big company releases something like this SKY are hot on their heels... C'mon VM the world is leaving you behind again.

Sky certainly are dishing out some cracking offers i contacted sky for a friend who can't speak after explaining sky were happy for me to do the talking for her they gave her full pack 80% off for 12 months a 2TB sky+hd box and £100 vouchers.
With offers like that i might go to sky myself lol.

As for vm i feel they really need to up their game now i still stand by what i've always said vms biggest disaster was selling of their channels these were a huge bargaining chip for them.

Well for a start they would of had a bargaining chip to do with BT, also a favourite channel of many BRAVO wouldn't of got closed.
You tell me what deals they had you're the one who works for vm not me.
And i stand by my statement vm should never of sold their channels.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015)

...those channels were next to worthless for VM unless they were prepared (which they were not) to invest heavily in quality programming for them.

It was a good deal all round for both Sky and VM. VM got access to Sky's HD channels and Sky got the channels so it could use their valuable EPG slots on satellite as Sky wished.

If anyone has read my threads in the news section, you will know that John Malone, ultimate owner of VM, also controls the following channels:

Discovery
Eurosport
QVC

and a shareholding in ITV.

He's up to all sorts of things and you can read my speculation about it all here:

The SD picture on Sky and VM is terrible - but they stream HD which is excellent.

They go HD on Sky next month so hopefully VM will go HD too.

can you keep virgin media phone and broadband and just get sky tv?? getting some fantastic offers from sky too. they're really battering virgin media with their offers now. virgin media need to keep us updated with any treats asap!

rememeber that email sent out as a survey asking what we would like etc like free netflix or on demand movies and sky atlantic etc? it appears our price hikes were to fund the survey and nothing else....

I don't think so - you need to provide your Sky viewing card number to authorise streaming (or subscribe to streaming).

Yes you can. That is my current set up - BB and Phone from VM @ £18.09 and the FULL Sky TV package (half price for the 2nd year running!) for £40.50

I have just done exactly that. £17 per month for the bb (and M TV - apparently it is cheaper do it that way) + line saver. I have got 60% off everything including multi room (I have 3) and hd from sky. Total saving for me is £41 per month (and that was after loyalty discounts from WM). They have given me 1 x 2TB box, 2 x HD+ boxes and 1 x standard HD Box - had to pay the £10 install fee though.

For me because the Virgin multi room was significantly cheaper than Sky it was never worth it but for that price it now is.

I've never subscribed to sky in the past but as i have NowTv i got an email offering me 50% off.
If i was still in the market for pay TV it would be sky. VM really need to up their game to tempt people but with them it seems to be this is the price, take it or leave it.

Every offer I see on VM site they want £16.99 just for the 'phone, is there something I'm missing? I'm out of contract in a few weeks so really interested in deals. I have Sky package at 50% off but the 'phone + BB is the killer. Can't find anything under about £45pm (anytime calls included). I'm seriously looking at BT for that price which includes all their sport in HD + a number of other channels.

My phone is only weekend calls. I initially wanted to cancel the TV and the phone line. The price that I was quoted was £19.99, after a loyalty discount was applied, for the standalone 50Mb BB. I agreed with this and asked them to go ahead with the termination of the other 2 services. 2 days later I received a call from VM with an offer that if kept the phone line they could reduce my bill to £18.09, again with a loyalty discount applied, obviously I took them up on this offer. I don't need a phone line really as I have a contract mobile and get unlimited calls/texts etc with that.

Nothing as it isn't illegal, it is a grey area but the worst that happens is the sites such as abc,hbo etc block proxies the smart dns providers simply work around this with fixes, this is why i stand by saying a paid vpn/smart dns is always much safer than a free one.

You'd be mad not to take them up on that - effectively you're paying £1.10 for BB & weekend calls. Wonder if they'll offer that to me in a few weeks time - can't even win a tenner on the lotto so doubt it.
