Horse & Country TV are doing a survey via their website to expand their audience. They want to know whether the channel should launch on Freeview, Freesat, BT Vision or Virgin Media next. Before anyone asks me, I participated in the survey and voted for Virgin. :D Is this a good thing or a bad thing?:o:

If anyone wants to participate in the survey and vote for Virgin, here is the link:

Seen that story on that blog last night - and voted for Virgin and Freeview.

Isn't the news on BBC One HD already in HD , the speculation was that once BBC News moved to the new broadcasting house that we could potentially see a HD version of the BBC News channel at some point in the future.

What about ITV HD? Does the news have the HD flag on that channel?

I don't see any HD flags on any news programmes on BBC Scotland HD or STV HD but both are definitely broadcasting in what looks like HD quality to me.

Surely its Virgins choice, even if all VM customers voted for Virgin if Virgin don't want the channel it will not appear.

Its different for Freesat, and Freeview you buy a slot and you can launch.

I would like to see some of the serial complainers on here be confronted by a technical problem and put it right straight away. I think some people are being totally unreasonable and would love to see them run the service better. When I look at the suffering and poverty in the world I find it a bit gut wrenching to see people complaining about not having itv2 hd for another couple of weeks.

Great to see the ITV HD have arrived, had to laugh though on ITV4 HD was The professionals (I know SD) had the obligatory black columns to keep the aspect ratio intact, it was just the signing guy was in the middle of the bottom of the picture. At one stage it looked like the signing guy was being interrogated and not Bodie:)

PS I will try to be less grumpy:)

Because taking 3 channels off satellite, descrambling them, transcoding them from MPEG4 to MPEG2, re-encrypting them and distributing them via 54 regional headends is so much easier than using a calendar? ;)

Cheers Jameseh, it's now a relatively a small list. If we take out SS3/4/F1 and Sky Atlantic HD (which I doubt we will ever get), Nat Geo HD which have, and the very small possibility that BT will not save ESPN America, the list is even better. I would happy if we just got Nat Geo Wild HD

Out of interest, is there likely to be much loss of quality from transcoding from MPEG4 to MPEG2, or is enough bandwidth allocated to make the issue moot?

Anyway, it's unlikely we'll get NHK or RT as Virgin seem to be unwilling to launch news channels in HD, except for Sky News HD, which will be of any use at all. Also, Disney Jr HD will be interesting; if Nickelodeon launch Nick Jr HD or if the BBC launch CBeebies HD, then at least the infants will be pleased with all the pretty colours. Oooh! Nothing to do with release dates either, sebastion. It was a technical problem, relating to transcoding from MPEG4 to MPEG2 according to spiderplant.

All this hype on HD channels, all it is is a sharper picture. If VM customers are not careful VM will start to have a separate package like Sky does.

I like other members want new channels placed onto the network, not just HD

Nothing to do with release dates either, sebastion. It was a technical problem, relating to transcoding from MPEG4 to MPEG2 according to spiderplant.

Ok OLD BOY thanks.

Ah, but on programs like Nature, the HD really shines through.

I once said HD was a waste of time as normal Digital was enough for me, however, now I will always watch the HD variant of the channel if available

When I look at the suffering and poverty in the world I find it a bit gut wrenching to see people complaining about not having itv2 hd for another couple of weeks.

Well when you put it like that, maybe we shouldn't bother with TV at all and get off our @rses and go help these people!

Media Boy, there are channels out there that can be on the VM system, but are not.

Premier Sports, Atlantic (no not again people will say) and True Movies Two etc, l think what a major problem with VM, is that they like to cause frustration with customers over channels.

I would love to see regional channels ie STV channels on the WHOLE VM network all over the UK.

For STV for example l go to Sky Freesat on the Add Channels list.

I think that if VM is nationwide, then we should get those channels. This may be the start of another discussion thread, but there must be lots of members that would love to know what is happening in other area's of the UK.

As usual Media Boy, thanks for your hard work.

That is only possible because the satellite STV broadcast on covers the whole of the UK. It's not available on Freeview across the UK

The only way VM would be able to broadcast STV (and UTV) in England and Wales is if ITV agreed to it. It would also require some technical work to get STV sent to every headend in the VM network.

Same applies for the regional variations. It would require not only the agreement of the broadcaster, but also some technical changes to take the local feeds and send them across the country.

The only other SD Channel I'd really like (aside from the others already mentioned, Food Network & Sony Movies & Sky Atlantic) is The Travel Channel.

They are now owned by Scripps who also own Food Network & the US version of Travel Channel, are due to relaunch in the next few weeks to match the style and some programming of the US Travel Channel, and have recently announced that they are to launch on Freesat to coincide with the relaunch, so who knows maybe they are in talks with Virgin too?

Yeah you're right. If only Virgin were a media company and this was their bread and butter. Jesus wept.

Still, whatever the reasons I'm pleased they're here. ITV 4 hd was pretty much the only channel on my wishlist.

But Virgin Media do not broadcast 'Nat Geo Wild HD' yet.
