That is indeed the quandary that Virgin has to deal with because with it as it stands it is excellent value in the XL pack but if BT Sports goes outside the XL pack then Virgin will have to appease quite a few customers who have the XL pack simply for that reason.

You can still get it cheaper than that at the moment by buying a bundle , for example

A 6 months entertainment pass with a Now TV box included is £34.99 or £5.83 a month for 6 months.

Re: General Sky TV Discussion

The new EPG looks slicker but for me it's not as intuitive to use as the last version. I also find myself button pushing more than I did under the old EPG. Not completely sold as of yet. Ease of use is more important than presentation every day of the week.

On a side note I totally hate the new search facility on SKY. I found the old version helped deliver what I was looking for so much easier. I was able to filter out things like movies and documentaries so much easier.

I actually feel like things are going backwards. I'm no technophobe but things seem to be moving towards what SKY think is best rather than what the customer thinks is best.

muppetman11 03-05-2014 23:31

Re: General Sky TV Discussion

As I remember the old search you could filter so say

Movies - Comedy

Or

Sport - Boxing

You can still do this by simply typing Boxing or comedy , seems to work the same here.

As for button presses I'd say it's exactly the same the exception being accessing TV guide which requires a second press , the coloured shortcuts still work ie Red On Demand , Green Planner. Maybe it's just me I suppose I've had a lot longer to get used to it.:D

I guess we all have different viewing habits as with most updates it seems a mixed bag you either love it or hate it :D , I've seen some people state they don't like how search lumps On Demand and TV Guide together now , I must admit I didn't at first however it's grown on me.

I always say it but if you don't like something start a thread on the Sky help forum , if it's something others don't also like they'll listen trust me on that the development team listen to all constructive feedback.

Exactly my opinion , the changes have clearly been made to encourage the take up of On Demand , bringing On Demand to the front page encourages those who haven't yet connected their boxes up to do so. I do most of my recording via the Sky+ app on my iPad , with the new update its also nice to have the ability to put the box in/out standby.

Internal communication is currently that there is No Planned roll-out date for additional boxes to get the new EPG.

The last update we had was that they were NOT getting it in the foreseeable future.

If it happens that they aren't going to do this upgrade then they may do a box upgrade scheme but this is unlikely given Sky's history on customer loyalty.
The Thompson box swap was only done because of winning in court against Thompson.

Yet another channel to show repeats. :(

I would have thought ITV2, 3 & 4 not forgetting catch-up and boxed sets would be plenty considering a high proportion of ITV1 is also repeats.

How much might it cost Sky to change the English Premiership's mind on an exclusive broadcasting rights deal?

Pure speculation, but the buying power of 3 big European broadcasters might help.

I'm sure BT Sports will be looking at a similar "Nuclear" solution.

I`d love to see a situation were a certain number of Premier league games MUST be shown `free-to-air`. Then maybe a broadcaster could have exclusive rights `eh?

Not going to happen, by doing so you weaken the next bid in three years' time as the defeated party could throw in the towel or decide it's not worth bidding. Do this a couple of times and you are just left with one bidder.

Also, there's not much advantage to buying the Premier League across Italy and Germany as like England, each country is only prepared to pay serious money for its own league.

BT Sport's current rights have gained it 5m subscribers including 1.8m via VM wholesale. If it won massive Premiership rights then it would be unable to bundle it free with broadband. Which is the whole point of it in the first place!

They are aiming for the sports that Sky/BT are unlikely to go for. It will be interesting once (if expected) bEIN Sports enter the UK tv market. From what I've read they will blow BT & Sky out of the water.

Trouble is BT and Sky are encroaching on Premier Sports' territory. Sky has added GAA and has displaced Premier Sports from the Super League (rughby).
I know beIN Sport is not a 100% commercial operation but I don't think that they will enter the UK as it is too crowded a market. As well as BT and Sky firing on all cylinders, Discovery now has raised its stake in Eurosport from 20% to 51% and promises investment in rights too. I think beIN could find some far better territories than the UK.

The plan for bEIN Sports was to secure the rights for North Africa and the Middle East which they have done, The next step is Europe (they already operate in France).

We could see 3 Broadcasters in the next PL bidding rights

European Law prevents it as well - hence the bundled system of bidding. No one company can hold all five bundles.

There's always someone going to "blow Sky out the water" no one ever does. Last time it was apparently going to be al jazzera. But the came out publicly an said competing with Sky is pointless for them. As if they did win any football rights they would have to pay far too much for it.

Business is business and no company will throw £3billion/£4billion or almost $7.5billion just to get 120 EPL games a year for 3 years. Sky make it up as you need to have the basic channels to get Skysports an they are also very successful at up selling broadband and phoneline. So a skysports customer becomes a full tv package/bb/phoneline customer aswell. BT only paid £700million over 3 years and it already gave them millions more subscribers an they have the added bonus broadband sign ups.

EPL TV rights don't sell massively outside of the UK.

Hmmmm, the only problem I see there is BTSPORT have the UEFA Champions league rights exclusively from 2015 for 3 years. They paid £900million.

Can't say I'm surprised if I'm honest , from a business stance they probably feel it loses them revenue from potential multiroom sub's so basically if you want to use Sky Go on a gaming device its either pay £5 for Sky Go extra or get it included with multiroom.

The sports pack rise is so much more compared to the movie pack, wonder why this is? My guess is it is so less expensive to keep repeating the same old tat that is spewed out on most of the sky film channels than it is to broadcast live sport.

I'm on friends and family, 50% off, and pay £36.25 per month for Family with Sports & Movies HD. The price rises indicate my package will be going up by £4.00. Does anyone know if, as a friends and family customer, my package will go up by £2.00 rather than £4.00? If it goes up by £4.00 then that's a 11% increase. Would that entitle me to terminate my contract without penalty?

The Sky Service app will let customers:
• Manage your account
• Check and review their Sky package subscriptions
• Reset their TV PIN
• Check and change their Broadband Shield settings
• Set up and change which Sky+ HD box they send remote record requests to. (Remote record allows customers to record a show or Series Link at the touch of a button by using the Sky+ app)
• Check and change their engineer visit time and date
• Search: so whatever they want is easy to find with relevant Q&A
• Check their service status
• Request a call-back

Quick question for my SKY chums.

I have a SKY multiroom subscription with SKY+HD box in the living room plus SKY HD box in the bedroom. I've been offered a SKY+HD box for £20.00. If I buy the box, to replace the SKY HD box in my bedroom will I have to:

1. Call SKY to pair the card with the new box
2. Pay more than my current multiroom subscription to enable the recording features on my new box (I'll be looking to use full SKY+ features on both boxes)

I just can't seem to find this information on SKY's website.

Thanks guys

Number 1 = Yes. You will need to call Sky
Number 2 = No. You will not get charged any extra as the cost is part of the Multiscreen sub

Personally I input the number and go directly to key channels , Sky Sports News being one of them so the EPG order is irrelevant to me.
