Awful performance but no surprise that Howard Webb was quite happy to let Shawcross and Huth et al get up to their usual tricks. Stonewall penalty not given and a couple of borderline ones completely ignored. Got the dogs abuse he deserved so maybe that's why! Woodgate should have been off in the first half.

Only saving grace was we didn't have to go down to Stoke to watch that sort of thing this time around.

The trouble is we are still reliant on one or two players scoring our goals all the time where the other teams seem to have many players who can chip in here or there with goals.

There's a lack of fluidity in the final third and a complete lack of ability to open defences up perhaps with the exception of Suarez, Maxi, Bellers and Gerrard when he's playing since they're really the only players we have who are capable of intelligent movement off the ball. You need 10 outfield players who can pass and move but today we only had 2 on the pitch.

If Newcastle win tomorrow its surely us vs. Liverpool for the second Europa spot. Plus if it is still in the balance on the last day I'm sure Everton will suddenly forget how to defend.

Good luck to the Swans today - only one home loss this season and considering Arsenal's poor defensive away record, we could be seeing a very welcome Welsh win over North London's "finest" :D

Yes it should be a interesting match and l for one will be hoping that Arsenal stumble as it would help our european qualification cause a bit.:)

I was a referee, and was always told trainers that IF a penalty was saved, then the penalty taker wasn't allowed to score from the rebound, but another player could.

I noticed from a recent game that Rooney took the penalty, it was saved and Rooney scored from the penalty and it was allowed, surely this is unfair.

Maybe there might be someone out there who can tell me different.

Hugh 15-01-2012 12:35

Re: Football Season 2011/12

I believe if it rebounds off the keeper, the penalty taker can score from that (if that was the case here).

That is confirmed by this referee's site
Quote:

he must not play the ball a second time until it has touched another player

If the penalty taker touches the ball a second time before it has touched another player, an indirect free kick is awarded to the defending team.

I don't think you can blame the ref, it looked like a penalty to me and even the initial replays seemed to confirm it. You blame the player for the dive but he got his team a goal so it is what it is.

he didn't con the ref, he showed trickery to get the peno, his foot landing on Rambos leg was unfortunate. with 2 extra eyes it could have gone the other way. as for motm.. he caused mayhem busting a gutt, good for him.

Nah, as soon as he felt contact he went to ground and then had a massive smirk on his face. He knew what he was doing, he did play well tho.

Dont know what Arsenal need at the moment but we are just not scoring enough goals and letting too many in.

1st of all Arshavin really needs to go as he is useless nowadays only good thing he done is those 4 goals against Liverpool a couple of seasons ago and thats it.
Walcott not sure he has potential perhaps he has just been put out of position

What Arsenal need to do is,

clear out those out of contract in the summer now!
buy Gourcuff and M'Villa, using a little force could get both of them during this window. Gourcuffs isolated and needs to be sold. M'Villa needs his national spot held down so any forceful move for him could prove successful.
loan a decent experienced fullback

the rest can be sorted out in the summer including clearing out the rest of the deadwood and buying

Almunia, Mannone.. may be Fabianski need to go. Santos is some Lidl purchase that needs to be sold in the summer. Gibbs and versatile Jan Vertonghen is what we need. Djourou needs to be sold, he's just a frustrating mediocre player. Squid earns way too many quids alongwith the rest of the flops draining the clubs resources.

Arshavin, Rosicky, Diaby, Yossi, Park, Denilson, Bendtner... Vela?

Wenger not the board, Wenger has led us into this mess. complete neglect and foolish faith. hes riding his luck out with full back too, I doubt we'll see one incoming during this window.. he keeps banging on about how far some of the injuried players are from coming back. Tommy at LB makes me sick.

out of contract this summer, only a handful of players out of the long list draining this club,

Manuel Almunia
Lukasz Fabianski
Vito Mannone
Tomas Rosicky
Andrey Arshavin

his bank manager/football manager mind frame, plan doesn't make sense. him and his squad are flops.

I think this is quite disrespectful towards Wenger, accusing him of neglect is out of order. This has been a difficult season but we should not turn on the manager so readily, especially when you consider all he has done for the club.

He isn't riding his lack of full backs, we have four full backs out. Four. Not only the two first team full backs but also their cover and another CB out on top of that. There is only so much he can do. We can't have 6 full backs in the first team squad, hell, we're only allowed to register 25 players anyway.

Wenger's made mistakes but he has worked miracles with the budget he has, and that is the boards concern. A bad season and some fans are levelling accusations of neglect at him.

no it isn't. Wenger has neglected this squad not signing additional players prior to all this but instead brought in flops and put way to much faith in flops. he continues to put way too much faith in flops.

Wengers done a lot I know but looking back he inherited a backbone that needed to be polished up, hes great at that. hes not great on building a squad from scratch though.

can't really argue with that. you know for Arsenal to registered an incoming signing they will either have to sell or take one off the current list. home grown etc. rules.

miracles? have you seen the wage bill, some of the salaries flops are on? thats nothing short of stupidity. as for signings, he has funds.. the board are not eating away all of it.. Wengers just trying to be too smart and its going to backfire big time soon, he's already had warnings.

Song was considered a flop written off by many until he turned good. Koscielny has absolutely panned early last season. Sagna as well. Sometimes the faith pays off and we get a good player. You need to gave them playing time.

This season he brought in Arteta who has been good, Mertesacker who has been good, Chamberlain and Jenkinson who have also been promising. His youth policy, i.e having faith, has seen Coquelin and Frimpong show promise as well. If Wenger has listened to all the complainers we would have Schwarzer in goal instead of Szczesny. Another incidence were Arsenal fans were spitting blood at Wenger's faith but one that was a brilliant decision.

The wage bill is around the 4th/5th biggest in the league and that is where we typically end up. However it's done with minimum transfer fees. That is an achievement. We have some money but nothing like that of United, City and Chelsea, Arsenal made a small profit last year.

I remember because I backed Song and Kosh on Arsenal Land while everyone was either saying loan Song out when he was peaking good form and dubbing Kosh a flop when you could blatantly see him fighting for the cause. Indeed faith does pay off but what about the long list that are ego inflated fools?

Agree, Arteta has added alot including us looking a lot more solid in the middle of the park. Merts getting there but you can tell he's a Lidl purchase too. Oxo cubes raw quality agree. His faith is paying off but those who show raw quality deserve it, not those who can neither put it down or learn from mistakes. the goalkeeper coming through was a good one but also remember he put in a big money bid in for Reina

overall its good but look closer ignoring the rest of the clubs, look at Arsenal only and you'll see a lot being wasted. those fund could be spent paying someone worth while that can actually make a difference for us whether it be fit or able to do sometihng with the football.

we can challenge, fair play doesn't need to be used as some scapegoat, in fact it can't be with millions of players out there able to do a much better job than some of our current lot which are in reality, deadwood.

Easily the Swans' biggest result in 30 years. Didn't see any of the game on tv as I was travelling but I'll be happy with the score. My only concern is Vorm, easily our player of the season so far is likely to be snapped up by a bigger club soon and we'll end up bottom 3 next year.

Still, I assume the match made the day of a certain anti Welsh CF member who supports Arsenal but hasn't been seen in a football thread since the glory days ended in 2005 :D

ITV has agreed a new two-year deal with The Football Association for the broadcast rights to the pick of The FA Cup and England internationals, including home qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup, from the 2012-13 to 2013-14 seasons.

As part of the new agreement with The FA, ITV1 will continue to broadcast the first pick of FA Cup games throughout the season from the First Round to The Final; as well as the third choice game pick in the Fifth and Sixth Rounds and the fourth choice pick in the Third and Fourth Rounds. ITV1 will also have first choice of replays from the Third to Sixth Rounds. In total, ITV will broadcast up to 16 live games across each season in addition to comprehensive highlights from every round.

ITV will also continue to be the free-to-air home of England internationals including all home qualifying games for the FIFA 2014 World Cup and all home and away friendlies during the two year period. Away qualifiers are sold by opposition associations and therefore do not fall under this FA agreement.

The football season’s traditional curtain raiser, The FA Community Shield, will also return to free-to-air television in 2012 and 2013 under the new deal. ITV will also extend its commitment with The FA across the two seasons to encompass live coverage of six games from The FA Youth Cup on ITV4, including the Semi-Finals and Final of the competition.

From what I heard Barry and Lescott played well, I'd be far more concerned about Savic.

Lescott was poor. Equally Barry.

Savic was poor previous game...but no worse last night.

But, Barry just makes an average player look good.

P-a-p-i-s-s Demba Cisse has undergone a medical at Newcastle with a fee set at about £10 million

Two Senegalese strikers both with a hint of Demba ;)
Problem is that Pardew clearly stated he had no intention of buying a striker but all of a sudden has went and don't the opposite. Got that awful feeling Demba Ba is on his way out.

Swear filter blocks his name

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is closing in on a shock swoop for Freiburg striker Pa**** Demba Cisse.

Press Association Sport understands the Magpies have agreed an undisclosed fee for the Senegal international and that he is on Tyneside with a view to tying up the transfer.

Cisse, 26, would join international team-mate Demba Ba, who left for the African Nations Cup having scored 15 goals to date this season, on the Magpies' books.

Pardew revealed at the start of the January transfer window that the club were unlikely to recruit a striker this month after ending their interest in Sochaux's Modibo Maiga, but would instead concentrate on landing a central defender with Steven Taylor sidelined for the rest of the campaign by an Achilles injury.

Quote:

Cisse was rated at around £14million during the summer, but it is understood the fee is significantly less than that with the Magpies continuing to exploit the European market, a policy which has proved hugely productive in recent seasons

Senegalese and frenchmen, meet cold weather and pies.

I'm guessing its an incentive for Ba to stay as well as a backup plan incase he goes. Hope its pays off though, can't remember the last big bucks signing that was any good.

Either way I am liking the way the side looks, hasn't looked this good in a long time. With a new defender I feel we can realistically push for Europe.

Edit: Demba has now signed. Confirmed from source inside the club but strangely no news outlet has reported it yet.

Second Edit: BBC finally caught up :P

Liverpool have agreed a deal with Sporting Lisbon, close to £1m, to sign one of the most talented young players from the academy that has developed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Nani.

João Carlos, 19, is moving to Anfield after coming to the attention of the Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, during a scoring performance in the NextGen series of youth-team matches earlier this season.

The teenager has been talked about in Portugal as being similar to a young Deco but Sporting have financial issues and have decided to accept Liverpool's offer in keeping with their usual policy of nurturing young players and then selling them for profit.

I don't understand what this has to do with the Football Season 2011/12, maybe you should have created a new thread ;)

I know this might sound cold, but it happened over 20 years ago.
The likelyhood of ANY witnesses remembering precisely what happend is slim to none, not to mention those 'witnesses' having to recall such an awful day.

Imo it's as relevant today as it was 20 years ago due to the lack of explanation and perhaps justice the families have received, with luck season 2011/2012 will rectify that.

It's an issue relating to the world of football which has arisen in the 2011/2012 season. Sometimes we have other threads, such as the death of Gary Speed, but this doesn't really warrant another thread.

Good day of football ahead followed by a super Sunday.

If Newcastle beat Fulham they move above Arsenal into 5th requiring Arsenal to beat Manchester United on Sunday to retake that position. If Chelsea fail to win, Newcastle will be a point behind them. Liverpool could take advantage of a Newcastle slip and jump over them as they play Bolton away (ESPN). A relegation match between QPR and Wigan is also an interesting game.
