Question Please!

On the V+ it was possible to skip forward and back by a set time in VOD by pressing buttons on the remote. I cannot see a similar facility on the Tivo. Is it possible?

yeh I noticed this. was a handy feature because the FF on OD is pitifully slow. the iplayer app has something similar using the skip key but not sure about old skool OD.

50% longer (and correct) answer is yes. You can use "skip to tick" just like in recording playback.

Just as spiderman said!:)

The following reply came from the VM Tivo support forum....

Hi Fixerman,

We don't have the 10-minute skip via numbers like on the V+ but if you press fastforward and the 30-sec skip button you will jump to the nearest white bar in the timeline (this is typically 15 minutes). I think you can do the same thing with the opposite buttons to rewind.

I just called to order the TiVo box and I was put through to a rep who seemed quite unsure of what he was saying and he said that I would lose my loyalty discount if I order TiVo.

Also, he said that I don't need to quote the code I was given in the email but I was told by customer services that I do need to quote the code because it is specific to my account.

What's going on?!

I think the reason that you have not been asked for the code is due to the fact that new customers can order the box ( I may be wrong on that one ).

Some people have been told that they will lose the loyalty discount but when they have called again they will not lose it.

So i think that it is pot luck who you get through to:)

You shouldn't lose your discounts. I'd ring back and check again. If they say you will, then ring customer care (the 'I'm thinking of leaving' option; they aren't just for people tbinking of leaving). They should put things right.

Gotcha.

So the code that I got in the email is irrelevant right?

The TiVo guy on the phone said that everyone was given the same code.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Phoned up the TiVo team again and ordered the box within minutes with confirmation that I will not lose any discounts. I'll just be charged an additional £3 per month.

Install is booked for 4th May.

Just a couple of quick questions;

1) Are all TiVo customers, that haven't had multiroom in the past, being offered the free multiroom deal? I take it that I will be contacted by Virgin about this offer before the install date.

2) I have seen that some 10Mb broadband customers are being upgraded to 20Mb for free when they get TiVo. Is this another offer that Virgin will call me about?

I apologise.

I was certain you could not "skip" through OD content. Well, you couldn't the last time I tried it anyway; and I'm sure you couldn't on V+ either when I last had it.

Seems either it has been introduced recently or my memory is worse than I thought.

NOTE: Sorry for the edit, fixerman. I just went upstairs to try it out :D

I think my sarcasm detector is off but if you are serious, and can tolerate wild subjectivity, I get the very slightest impression that over all, SD PQ has improved in the last 24 hours. Ie the first day it just seemed bad, HD was good but all other channels including BBC were poor. Now I'm watching today and the same channels look...well...ok, even good.

It may well just be a natural biological correction process, now that I haven't seen a V+ images for a few days.

Ok, so had my install this morning.
Top bloke, was here about an hour. Everything went very well.
Took the V away and put the V+ in its place.
First impressions...Good, im not as amazed as i thought i would be.
Didnt think i would, but noticed a 'softer' pic on ITV sd.
Menus seem slow. Setting up lots of series links is frustrating. Is there no way to set padding, etc as defaults.
Tv guide seems too complex. To much info going on. Too many channels, progs on one screen.
When your watching a programme and click OK (or info) sometimes a green bar appears to show how far you can rewind. Does it only appear after viewing the channel for sometime?

Ps. EPG took about an hour to update too a couple of weeks and catch up wasnt working.

Really missing the skipable playlists on music, (when you pressed 1 for back and 3 for the next track) and have totally given up trying to search through the music videos.
Is it my tivo or should I be able to search "all tv" and get music videos listed there too, as there is no search optoin in music on demand. Thers a picture in the tivo hand book showing a search and a "music note! symbol next to justin bieber, meaning it is a music video?

also Im probably stupid but how do you stop a recording? When I press the stop button, tivo goes to a menu screen but the recording still plays in the corner?? Sorry if this sounds daft.

I'm sure that NCIS from FX HD never looked this good when viewed from my V+ HD. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it just looks better via TiVo on my 40" Sammy.

Hello All.
Had 2 guys to come & install Tivo today, they got to me around 09-10am & it took the around 40 minutes to getit going, wasnt to happy with young guy he must of only been about 18, when older guy was going through the setting on Tivo for the sound he asked if my amp was ok i said yes he asked the younger guy did he put in the optical cable, the younger guy asked what was that lol, after pluging it in i had sound & they left, wasnt untill i pused my stand back into the corner that i noticed that he hadnt pluged the scart cable from my Blu Ray recorder into Tivo so if i didnt see that & tried to record from Tivo onto disc i would of thought that Tivo was faulty, any way i sorted that & have a quick question. i cant get the text button to work on any channel, like if i want to see football news on BBC, on V+ i had to go into the settings & press interactive but cant get it to work on Tivo, thanks for any help in advance.:)

It's a case of monitoring the online sites as to if and when a US show will be broadcast in the UK.

Take for example, a show like Fringe; when it was first announced a couple of years ago, I knew I wanted to give it a try because it sounded interesting and was part created by JJ Abrams who, amongst other things, created Alias. It was a case of waiting to find out who would pick it up and when they would broadcast it ---- this information wasn't available until a few months after it had been announced.

As I understand it, you would have been able to enter 'Fringe' into the tivo wishlist and when the tivo guide came across a programme called Fringe, it would automatically record it. Tivo 'remembered' several months later, when I would most likely would have forgotten about it.

thats exactly how it works. when the bbc were running promo's at the beginning of the year i spotted candy cabs, thought it looked interesting so set it up as a wishlist and to auto record. completely forgot about it and then it showed up a few weeks ago - wasn't worth the wait, but was really pleased it worked!

Suggestions can be similarly useful.

I like US shows. I watch a lot of them.

When I first got my original S1 Tivo back in 2002, I was waiting for Channel 4 to show the next season of "Third Watch". I had been using my Tivo for a couple of weeks when I happened to check the suggestions it was making and guess what was in the list?! Yep. Unfortunately, I was a little late checking and it had started the week before, but at least I only missed the one ep :)

I`ve just had a look at my online billing, it says there is a technical hitch but across the top it says
ou're getting close to your credit limit of GBP180.00. To avoid any restrictions on your services, please make a payment of £150.14 now.
Now this is obvious that this is the tivo installation fee but I thought that credit limits were going to be increased for this ?

Thanks for that John , I had an email from Sky about it and thought I'd put the TIVO search to the test as I beleived it was a 21 day search :D

The wish list is a good feature meaning you'll not miss it anyway :D

For V+ users The Chicago Code starts on Thursday 12th May at 9pm on Sky1 HD.

Check out this thread over at the TiVommunity site:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb...d.php?t=468512

Reminders will appear soon, and Sky have allowed Virgin to show their channels whilst in the guide, as well as other stuff like the channel name being shown on the right of the screen whilst looking in the backwards guide.

Seems to be a lot going on at it is all for the good. Just a shame about the dates for the red button though?

Ive got a brilliant idea, why not supply your best customers with TiVo (if they want it), then only charge them for it when it works as it should. I'd be up for that.

Thanks for the link.

24 events on the BBCi app for the Olympics...impressive! Although I doubt people will be pleased to see that Sky Sports red button won't be making an appearance for quite some time (late 2011/early 2012).

Due to a change in contract with Sky, previously blacked out Sky channels while viewing the guide will now be shown - 2011

Reminders to , well done VM and TIVO for listening. LEAVE IT CARL LOL.
It really amazes me on here how every problem VM have is always Sky's fault , thanks for highlighting that Phil.

Well mine's working as it should in that it's recording what I ask it to. Is yours not? Anything else is just bells and whistles; good to have but not essential.

Funny, my V+ worked as it should and recorded what I asked it to and it didn't record multiple versions of the same show.

It had some bells and whistles such as Red Button Interactive, Reminders, Information panel on the front of the box, DVD copying made easy and it cost less to rent. Need I go on?:D

Change to create an illusion of progress!:gpoint:

If Tivo is advertising certain features, then they aren't bells and whistles; they're part of the advertised feature set.

Tivo offers powerfull search and additional information on shows, actors, directors and the like with links to online information. That is an important part of the feature set. You may just use the 'recording features' but others want that advertised extra functionality; it's what separates the Tivo box from V+ or Sky+

So, they should work. For me, they do, so I don't have a problem, just delight in the extra functionality.

Oh I do use all those features and they work too. That was my point :) The OP was, imo, talking like it was an expensive door-stop or something.

I never got any form of confirmation. I was down for a morning install and when the installer had not arrived by 12.00 I called 150 and asked where was my Tivo. They confirmed that it had been moved to an afternoon slot. Sure enough at 13.00 on the dot he turned up.

For peace of mind it is a good idea to give them a call. It happens all the time. They don't mind!:)

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I've had my TiVo for eight days now and the series link function seems very capricious. I set a link for Rome on TCM on every evening at the same time for the next week or so. When I checked in my planned programmes I found that recordings for Friday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday had not been registered. All the other evenings had the series link symbol next to them. I had to go back into the programme guide and set these individual recordings manually. There were no clashes on those evenings. Come on VM, must try harder.

Update: I've just checked again only to find that Saturday's episode was no longer checked to record. It was definitely there this morning. It seems that TiVo has simply 'forgotten' the series link. I checked in recording hiccups and there was no mention of problems with these programmes. This is a major bug that need fixing. Frustrating!

Just Had my TIVO installed about an hour ago. A couple of quick questions come to mind that I forgot to ask the engineer.
If I go away for a few days I would normally switch the box to "Standby" - I presume I should do the same with TIVO, but will it still record the programmes I have asked to record when I am away and the box is in "Standby" mode
also
I think there is a USB port at the rear - I haven't checked but the book suggests there is - am I able to insert a memory stick with AVI movie files on it and they will play ?

No problem leaving it in standby. All planned recordings will record.

The USB port is not customer useable!

A single tick means that show is scheduled for recording. Sometimes if you select a show for recording and subsequently select a series link, the first scheduled show will only show a tick but if you scroll down you should see the next episode will have the multi circle "R". It seems to be one of the many quirks of the TiVo.:)

carlwaring 22-04-2011 19:44

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

In addition to the above, a Series Linked recording will become a one-off recording, seperated from it's SL, if you change any of the options for that specific recording.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

I've just been setting up some series links etc & noticed that the gadget show appears twice it the 'Search TV' section.

If I search the letters 'GA' it comes up with 'Gadget Show, The' but also 'The Gadget Show' further down the list. Surely a single show should only have one 'Hub'?

This sounds a bit like my problem, I had TiVo fitted on Wednesday and the engineer had to use a second box and smart card,
I have just posted a message on the forum with some images of what I am seeing. Here is the link
