Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

I Have now gone from 5 to 6 downstream channels in Cambridge CB24.

My downstream SNR has gone down a fraction to around 32.5, so i hope that doesn't cause an issue as it maybe just out of spec.

My upstream channel ID has gone from 1 to 3, i haven't seen a 3 before so hopefully i will get 2 upstreams soon.

My graph appears to be alot lower than previous days and not too shabby.

They may manage 12Mb upload on 1 channel. I'm now on 6 down 1 Up. 120/12Mb expected any day now.

Originally I think it was March to July, then in July it got changed to July to September or October. Have a feeling it has changed to March next year now but I can't check now as I got the double upgrade due to a mistake :erm:

Edit: Just checked someone else in Croydon and they are being told Oct to Dec 2012, unless it changes again

Croydon was one of the last to have 100meg 'officially' enabled. Theres a fair bit of upgrading to do in Croydon which includes cabs I think. Have you noticed this sort of qaulity appear recently or has it been like this for a while?

That's probably because VM don't consider a 20ms increase in your ping as a major fault.

Hopefully it has improved your TBB graph like it did mine.

I had a 2hr outage at midnight last night and now my downstream SNR has gone from 32.5 to 42, which is alot better.

Im going to have to start a fresh as upload channel has also been swapped for a new Channel, No3 has been replaced with No2. Web Site requests seam faster.
but that might have been the browser update. All these things happen at the same time...

You can still use your current TBB unless your IP has changed.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

I am well hacked off with vm an there engineer who did some sort of 3 hour hardware replacement / upgrade on are green cab, got cut at 9.45 sent me lad down to ask how long the work will take an said couple o hours. well 3 hours later me misses comes home telling me are friends phone net an tv was back on.

so misses ran down as they was bout drive off an told him in plain terms no dial tone big problem, he turned round an said her friends connection may be newer an are's would prob be on in a few mins, an credit to my misses she has listened to me bang on about adsl, an doc faults for years an she double ran it home to him no dial tone big problem an off he drove into the sunset, 24 hours later an appoiment comes an they tell me there going round mopping loads of these faulty connections due to the blades not spicing in to cable properly when there upgrading the hardware, when questioned about it being related to upload upgrades he agreed.

since being connected again i can not get off channel 2 an it's performance is shocking with increase peaks happening any time for an hour or less in some cases, either its forced to stick like glue now or channel 1 is whole lot worse for it not to balance over to it

2 big packet loss ones are hard resets an not even that forced an upstream change, notice small losses over night as well didnt have that before hardware change (edit. looking at ping o tron the losses over night are shared by all)

That looks like a VMNG300 right? I still feel sorry for you getting this *bleep* service after so long, as you know I was thankfully able to escape earlier this year.

Looks like a very sudden increase in latency/congestion around 12pm though, much faster than you'd expect from "natural" congestion. Same goes for jempalmer. I wonder what it is...

Chrysalis 05-11-2012 08:45

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

I agree the sudden onset was unusual as well as the intensity, with past weeks I have had slow buildups of poor download performance but generally latency/jitter remained ok.

midday is when I started watching iplayer F1 stream, which made me suspect some new traffic management trial, but remember also it could still be easily congestion knowing how VM works a single user can have a huge impact and now VM are rolling out 133/12 services.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

It's not the bump that's the main issue, for me anyway. The major problem is this consistent awful service:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/s...05-11-2012.png

Why can VM not give an explanation as to why this is happening?

Hi I've spoken to the Networks team about this and it appears Cogent made some changes around the 23rd of September that are adversely affecting Virgin Media users. We're making some changes to our peering links with Cogent over the next few days, could you monitor your connection and tell us if things improve?

Thanks
then

15-10-2012 Link

Quote:

F002199132 - Hi we've identified an issue with our peering links to a company called Atrato who we publically peer with in Amsterdam and London. They were pushing abnormal amounts of traffic through our public peering links at LINX, overloading them. So we've shut down both of our peering links to Atrato at LINX which should resolve this issue. Meanwhile we're going to continue to investigate the root cause of this problem. Could you please continue to give us feedback on this so we can be sure the issue is resolved.

Thanks
then

25-10-2012 Link

Quote:

Hi it looks like we've swapped an issue with Cogent for an issue with Telia. I'm chasing the network team to get them to get in touch with Telia but in the mean time can you all post a Traceroute, Pathping and WinMTR traces (instructions here) if you're having issues. Having a bunch of recent evidence to pass along to Telia will hopefully help push this along.

Thanks
then

26-10-2012 Link

Quote:

And some even better news, we've completed some work today that's allowed us to re-open the peering link with Cogent so that should now not be overloaded. Could you check tonight and over the weekend and tell us if things have improved.

Thanks

He's a VM PR guy. Seems to be his only job ;)

Shows that its all BS and blaming other companies though. At the same time VM take a month+ to fix a problem that they should have jumped on and resolved within 48 hours...same old story.

VM seems to be breaking at the seams lately. More so than usual.

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

So, to which of the two weekends between Mark's 26th October post and now was he referring? The service is still not as it should be. Perhaps I shouldn't have asked "Why can VM not give an explanation as to why this is happening?", but instead "why have they not yet fixed it?"

I look at those TBB graphs regularly, and its not very pretty, even without the peering issues.

Trust me, I know what its like going from VM to FTTC, its a major difference ;)

Craig, Jems not asking for an explanation for the widespread peering bumps but rather the periods where his connection degrades due to usage or a fault other than the peering issue.

Jem you can get out of contract now with that sort of issue.

I gotta say, it aint half bad for a wireless connection over 700m and through a wall, with wrong antenna polarization and 3dB SNR.

you and I will probably be off the same server mate, I'm in Falkirk.

I've just checked my graphs going all the way back to early October and it was rife then too at 8pm.

I've also been getting odd day where I get those red lines dropping down which I can't figure out at all. I can a week without them then I get then for 2 or 3 days then nothing for about another week.

I have also noticed my downstream power levels dip super low during peak time. I'm at -4.5 dBmV atm but during the earlie hours and the afternoon it sits comfortable at -0.1dBmV

Fine, according to the original and best http://qasdfdsaq.com/ping/

Doesn't affect any traffic to/from VM that I could detect, seems like public peering is fine so looks like it's purely VM <=> TBB
